Definitely make a separate video on allowance… sounds like you’re applying the Dave Ramsey principles with save, spend, and give. Awesome job Lisa and Peter!!
Don't forget that all children in foster care qualify for free meals ( free part of free and reduced meals)! Even if they don't eat the full meal each day (if it's not as healthy as you'd like), they can supplement with milk, fruit and veggie. Check if the school has before/after care. Sometimes ours does parents night out which is nice. They eat pizza and watch a movie. Just enough time for you to veg or go out to dinner.
Yes, they always eat lunch at school 👍 Lots of schools have before/after care, but in our area it’s for an extra fee. And I love the bus coming to drop off rather than me having to go get them. I love the idea of a parents night out - that’s so kind of the school to do :) Now that visits have started, we have regular time for a short date.
Most public libraries will waive fees for overdue books or lost and damaged books for foster youth. I am a librarian and work for a library. And I am also a foster caregiver :)
If you want to adopt, there are many older kids whose parental rights are already terminated and would thrive in a steady home ❤️ Otherwise starting fostering the first goal is reunification. If that first goal can’t be met in a safe way or with a relative, then the plan changes to adoption.
@ We are in first steps of the process to become foster parents. I know the overall goal of the foster system is reunification, but there are a lot of kids in the foster care system whose parents rights have already been taken and are ready for adoption. I am open to adopting these kids and also fostering those who still have a chance of reunification. I’d love to know what part of indiana you’re from. I’m East of Indianapolis by about an hour.
What an open heart you have, and you have to be flexible. Question: Do the the friends coming over and helping have to have background checks done and everything or how does that work? Also, the clothes the fosters don't want or aren't right size; can they be taken back to foster closets?
So if friends come over while we are present they do not need background checks. It USED to be that if the kids stayed with anyone else without us for any length of time they needed a background check. but thankfully now our state allows us to have kids with a trusted friend without a background check (which is very helpful if something last minute comes up) but if they stay overnight with a friend or a friend/family stays at our house overnight, that person needs a background check.
Yes, I have passed them back on to other foster care closets. And as they are done with clothes, I can pass them back. However some of the closets only take new clothes
It really depends on the age of the kid, how long they are with us, etc but typically kids 3+ will call us just by our first names - Peter and Lisa. Kids younger than that naturally call us mom and dad - young kids will associate anyone taking care of them as that (even in like a daycare setting). Once kids were with us for over 1.5 years, they on their own starting sometimes calling us mom and dad. It really depends on the kid and what they are comfortable with. Early on if older kids call me mom, I let them know call me Lisa, but as time goes on, I let the kid take the lead. A long answer to your question to say ultimately it depends, but kids typically call us Lisa and Peter.
How wonderful ❤️ you were able to take the 3 kiddos 😊....i know you want a child of your own (hope & pray) for you would you consider adoption or a permanent foster placement?...😍
You guys are great people and great parents. what a joy to do what you love and help families at the same time.
Lisa and Peter, you both are such a blessing in this world! Also, you seem to have such a great community of people around you. God bless.
Yes, our village makes it easy to say yes, because I know they will step in and help when we need it! So very thankful ❤️
Just thank you. Thank you. Thank you. You both seem so kind and open to feedback and my heart

Yup! Definitely using the Dave Ramsey system 😆 we got the kids story books and banks for them
@@HappyHoppe that is awesome.
Thank you for sharing, you explain some of the challenges very well.
You and your family are a light!!
We plan to reopen our home after the first of the year! This video makes me want to do it today. 🥰 Love your heart, mama.
It’s good to have seasons of rest too ❤️
You are so beautiful inside and out. Sending blessings and love.

Good luck with all the placements and with your journey with IUI. Watching from Wales UK.
So glad you are back at the foster videos!
Could you talk more about safe family? Is that in every state?

That’s good to know :) it was the school library and I’m guessing they just had never seen that before.
My husband and I are looking into fostering with the intention of adopting. We also live in Indiana. I would love to be able to pick your brain!

We do reading homework at bedtime. Of course, I'd only do that once the child is reading independently and the homework is just to read for x minutes.
Imani same thing I would love to hear. I love to see you make a video about.
I may have missed Imani’s comment. What would you like a video about Katy?

What do your foster kiddos call you and your husband typically? I've only had one placement ever call me mom.
It really depends on the age of the kid, how long they are with us, etc but typically kids 3+ will call us just by our first names - Peter and Lisa.

How many fit in your mini van??? 😂❤. You might need two vehicles temporarily....😮
8 👏 thankful for the Honda Odyssey! It wasn’t convenient with 3 car seats for the littles, but we could all fit :)

We really love being foster parents & supporting the goal of reunification with parents :)
Would the state provide tutors for the school-agers to lessen the load on you?
Yes, we are in the process of getting one 👍 I made sure to ask for one - now I know to ask for help, because it takes a village ❤️
