Engines of Amtrak - GE P30CH
ฝัง
- เผยแพร่เมื่อ 2 ก.พ. 2025
- The GE P30CH, affectionately known as the "Pooch", was the first all new locomotive for Amtrak. It was also the first diesel offering from GE to Amtrak whom was still struggling to find a reliable mainline diesel. From their dog-like performance, distinct GE chugging noise to their screeching P5A and K5LA airhorns, the P30s sure lived up to their nickname. While they may have looked nice (when they weren't charred from engine smoke), how successful was the locomotive and how did things end for it?
This episode is a bit of a short one due to the fact there isn't much in the way of story or information about everything relating to the engines. The next episode, the GP40TC, will also likely be a bit shorter but after that one, I should be back to making longer ones. All the same though, I hope you still enjoy(ed) this episode and thanks for watching!

I live in San Jose, California and I would love to see those locomotives back then running on the Southern Pacific. The P30CH is a beautiful locomotive, it’s a shame that none are in existence. But still being remembered back then on Amtrak.
All scrapped. Very sad.
@Nathan Corcoran same!

2:52 "pooch"
Its the best nickname i've ever heard!
I love the drawings at the Beginning of the video. They're perfect.
It is pretty good.
Fun fact: Amtrak P30CH 715 was involved into a wreck in Harvey Illinois in 1979, it crashed into a parked Illinois Central Gulf freight train. Amtrak P30CH 715 was damaged beyond repair and scrapped same goes to the ICG GP40 leading the parked frieght train as well, but the second unit ICG GP40 3029 was repaired and returned to service, but in 1984 is was involved another accident it was retired and use for spare parts.
GE locos spitting fire... That's just what you bargain for with GE
My dad worked for rock island, then CNW, finally BN....my dad learned to love the GEs....he modeled one in HO back in 1984, i repeated the kitbash in 1992-1993 modeling 2.
Aesthetically, the P30CH is my Favorite of all Amtrak Locomotives. I don't really care if it was a failure.
All I can say is, *AT LEAST ONE SHOULD HAVE BEEN PRESERVED.*
I wish that a Pooch was preserved as well. Maybe even one restored.
You're "Time Traveler"... I bet you could go back and save one.
I would choose either 718, which had an exceptionally great K5LA later on, or 720, because "720" is the number of my birthday (July 20th).
Nice
P000000ch
Yes it’s finally here
Actually, the P30s didn't replace the SDP45s on the SP Peninsula. They were being used temporarily since the SDP45s had to be used on freight assignments or rebuilt and SP's 3 new GP40P-2s hadn't arrived yet.
Actually 🤓
5:01 lmaoo the best part
Amtrakguy365 is the youtuber that caused me to like amtrak instead of hate them, keep the good work
Ps you might as well do the f40phs my guy
Yay! Another EoA (Engines of Amtrak) Video!
This is actually an old one but remade
Another complaint was, the P30CH accelerated slow. Crews loved the F40PH because it accelerated fast.
Crews liked the F40PH more then the P30CH but liked the P30CH more then the SDP40F.
I don't care, I love the Pooch.
Love it
Also looking forward to the next episode, covering an engine that hasn’t been previously discussed.
Me too.
my fav Amtrak loco perhaps because it was so rare to see them. brings back memories. Great video. Cheers, Rob

This is good work my friend! 👏🏽👍🏽 I love this and hope to see more soon
It is pretty good, although the P30CH is sadly scrapped. We could’ve have one on display at the Museum of American Railroads in Frisco, Texas.
Great Footage of the Old "Poochies" . Auto-Train original workhorses.
Worth the wait......
oh yeaaaaaa, I was waiting for this! Thx Man, this is a great video!

Awesome video
P30ch: nah
Pooch: there you go
I honestly don't know why I like this series so much, I'm British
Ooo! Nice job on this!
I love locomotives that can be described as looking like one giant brick
Hard to describe exactly which ones fit, but visually very distinct in the aesthetic
An excellent video. Hello from the Tracy Mountain Railway in Colorado. ♡ T.E.N.
The P30CH kinda helped out Amtrak with there HEP problem so its revolutionary in way to Amtrak.
I agree.
Yes, this is a terrific series!!!
That’s Right.
Rail fan, and a possible Mario and Sonic Fan? You've earned a sub my guy
I’ve been going to the train station in Hollywood Florida since I 1980. I do not recall ever seeing this unit. I remember seeing a red nose though.
Incredible, I never thought that video game music would go good with trains😆
Yes please more I miss these
Don’t worry boys.. the engineer is engi-here in the Video

I love the P30CH locomotives.
Me too.
The last true chugga-chugga-choo-choo train.
Yes a new one I was waiting for it!
Love your work keep it up
Yep, it is.
Man those old Amtrak commercials are fantastic. Being honest with you, I honestly believe that Amtrak would be smart to bring back TV commercials, so as to get their name back into the houses of the common American. Heck, why not have some radio and online commercials too?
Quickest click of my life!
I’ve been waiting SOOOO Long
Amrtrakguy: Engineer TF2 References
Me, an engineer main: YEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE
Wow, i didn't know how many engines look alike.
The last run of the P30CH took place exactly ten years before I was born. Although none of these were preserved, I can kind of see why. It would be a bit embarrassing to preserve a locomotive that was unsuccessful. Also, can’t wait for the GP40TC.
If that's the case the Sdp40f 644 should not exist
Amtrak: Oh no, we don’t have any HEP locomotives!
Engie: YEEEEE!!
He didn't mention this. But one pf the p30's was involved in a head-on collision with a parked freight train in harvey Illinois in 1979 (i think)
Locomotive #715
All of the videos of the horn samples where from my home territory. All videos were on the Auto Train.
That is interesting that we are now about to go over some of less noted locomotives like the GP40TC, F69PHAC and Flexliners
The Flexliners (Israeli version of Danish rubbernose trains) were guests for tests, as were the X2000, ICE1 and before that, the modified SJ and SNCF locomotives even painted in full Amtrak livery for test run before ordering the AEM7. They didn't borrow a Vectron though before ordering the ACS64.
Do you think the F69PHAC looks quite similar to Metra’s F40PH locomotives that they updated?
@@STUAA2025 Those are a separate model using the F69PHAC Cab known as the F40PHM-2/3.
I loved it!
No cap I like this style better than the others
AmTrak used the ALCo S2 switcher
Right?
I just looked up "Amtrak 1970s switchers" and I found the ALCo s2 switcher model locomotive.
Looks like the ALCo S2 was real at one point but its scrapped in favor for the MP15AC [every railroad uses the MP15AC as a switcher but for the long island railroad it uses the MP15AC for freight service]
5:01
“GOD &$&%#*! GE PIECE A S$&@!” That’s what the P30s can be summarized as in one sentence
5:00 XD
I like how the horns have the same name as me. It makes me feel special
5:01 when your microwave stops working
And since GE makes other kinds of appliances too, it expands the range of this the amount of people gifted to appropriately use that quote
Yeeeesss lmaoooooo
Dann it's funny when the window fell out of the window frame and with what he said.
Heya! *Loved the remake!*
Great video. Unfortunately no models have ever been made of this engine. 😞
Overland made them in Brass Ho Scale, but they cost up to over $1000
I now know why they never made HO scale models of P30chs.
0:47, 2:45, 3:49, ENGINEER GAMING. I love the Addition of the Engineer from TF2.
You forgot about the Shanadoa, the Amtrak train that ran on the Chessie System in West Virginia, they ran the P30CH'S on it
I wondered about this. The photo when he says The Blue Ridge route is the train pulling into the station at Harpers Ferry, West Virginia. I wondered if this was the route called the Shenandoah. Harpers Ferry is on the old cheesie system line.
I've been waiting for this. Maybe one day can you try a series like this but another rail company
The generator car shown early in the video looks like a demotored B unit of an E-series locomotive. The Providence and Worcester Railroad has one of these (or at least had one a couple of years ago) that I have seen in service on a fan trip.
The Rio Grande used a converted Alco PB-1 for head end power. I always thought that the passenger train looked funny with two F units, a PB-1, and another F unit. ♡ T.E.N.
5:01 GOD (BLEEP) GE PIECE OF (BLEEP)!
The Pooches lived out their last days on the Sunset Limited and Auto Train.
@Acerailfan3306 Trackside They died. Back then, AC wasn't standard in Cabs, really, so they just opened the window, and died when it fell out and hit them on their heads.
The Smokey appearance of the P30CH Reminds me of an ALCo P series Locomotives
Love it
The politics and economics of locomotive RFPs. EMD makes the SDP40F, GE then supples the P30CH. EMD gets another go and produces the F40PH and then GE responds with the Genesis series. Home run or weak grounder and only two suppliers worth considering it seems. Siemens might have got the contracts partially to get some fresh blood in.
I wonder what a Pooch with ditch lights and rear markers would look like?
*What a cute lil' poochie*
😢a pity they weren’t given as much upkeep as they should’ve
The poochies were all put down.

Why was the old video axed?
It was taken down by a copyright claim.
Great video. I hope you mention the GP40TC was used on the Loop service. If you don’t mind, can you send the link of the trainorders post?
This will be a first for the GP40CT locomotive I once heard that they were rebuild at the Santa Fe shops and Cleburne Texas Correct me if I'm wrong
