    6 years later and I'm watching this completely enthralled. I once saw Japanese masters restore a piece that no one could tell was broken in the first place. This restoration is the only demonstration that has even come close. I'm truly amazed.

    Its evident that to repair and restore as you do, means you are an artist and a colorist with incredible technical skills and knowledge of the characteristics of a wide variety of ceramics.
    Not to mention, an incredibly patient person.

    Thank you Mr. Scherer for this video. I can't believe porcelain is so hard~the impact to break it must have been significant. Pieces are sharp as well. Milliput Super Fine White instructions are not kidding when they read "rock hard in 3-4 hours". I had the same problem with my base as you had with your top. The only thing I could think of doing was to feather the circumference of the inside edge with a Dremel tool, so I could float it in after gluing. It was too tall/narrow to stick an arm into it. Thanks for the painting demonstration.

    Before you start painting do what car painters do after sanding your filler , not sure of the name of the product, but I’d rub some dry or damp pigment powder on the sanded areas and the pigment will get trapped in holes and scratches, identifying problems. Great work.

    I've gotten great instruction for statuary/ceramics repairs and have purchased both milliput and A&B epoxy with great results. I've been getting a few more repair jobs to do and was wanting to know how I can give an estimate on the repair work to be done. Can you offer any help/suggestions? I have found nothing on line. Thank you Martin.

    • @marsgitar
      @marsgitar  4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Wow, that's a tough question Gail, but a good one.
      I've been doing this for more than ten years now, so I'm able to come up with a figure with a mental calculation as I'm examining a potential repair. But back when I started, like you, I needed a way to come up with a price so that I don't cheat myself or my client. I made myself a spreadsheet calculator to do that. But, you don't need a spreadsheet to calculate a price.
      Here's a suggestion: make a list of all the possible steps and procedures you'll need to complete a repair. Be aware; this can get very difficult and complicated if the repair involves many pieces, missing pieces, and/or a lot of detailed hand painting. You probably won't think of everything the first time around, so you'll be updating this list until you get enough, and different kinds of, jobs done = experience.
      Imagine every step to do a repair. For example (I'm making this a short list just for this example - because the real list could be fairly long). A list might go like this:
      clean, "before" photo, bond, fill, smooth fill, paint, cold glaze, buff, "after" photo.
      Estimate how much time it will take to complete each item on the list (experience will make your estimates more accurate). Total that list of times. If you're new at this, multiply your total by 3 or 4.
      You'll then multiply that number by what you think your time is worth. I can't help you with that number other than to say it'll be based on your variety of skills, how good you are at them, and how much experience you have. You be updating and adjusting your list and prices as time goes by.
      I hope this quickie example is helpful to you. I wish you luck in your endeavors.

    Mr. Scherer could you please explain me why did you use AB epoxy plus Milliput? Why do AB epoxy is not only to use? Thanks,

    • @marsgitar
      @marsgitar  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I use A+B epoxy for bulk fills; to replace missing pieces and fill areas that need a strong bond and a hard material. I use the Milliput for a final fill over the A+B to fill fine imperfections and get a good transition at the edges of the fills. It can fill the tiniest of spaces. Milliput is a bit softer, and easier to file and sand.

      Sie können ein Epoxidharz namens „Araldit“ oder ein anderes klares Zweikomponenten-Epoxidharz verwenden, um die Scherben zu verbinden. Verwenden Sie Milliput White, um Risse, Absplitterungen und Hohlräume zu füllen. Verwenden Sie zum Dekorieren Acryl-Künstlerfarben. Eine Airbrush hilft, ist aber nicht notwendig. Ein Klarlack schützt die fertige Arbeit. Viel Glück.
      You could try an epoxy called "araldite" or any clear 2-part epoxy, to bond the shards. Use Milliput white to fill cracks, chips and voids. Use acrylic artist paints to decorate. An airbrush helps but not necessary. A clear coat will protect the work when done. Good luck to you.

    What type of paint do you use and do these paints come in classic 'porcelain' colours, cobalt etc ? thank you lovely long video ,,, makes us look at borken things differently. I remember with some horror how I repaired things before the modern materials came out !! I once took nail polish remover to an 18th century painting !!!

    • @marsgitar
      @marsgitar  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I use Golden brand acrylic paints and mediums for 95% of my repairs. The answer to your question is "Some paint colors are the same as classic traditional glaze colors". The "classic porcelain" colors (some of them) are the same as classic oil painting colors, because they are made from minerals found in the earth: ultramarine, iron oxide, umber, etc.., and the glazes are made from the same minerals. Even though most modern acrylic paints are made from synthetic materials, the colors are as close as possible to the traditional media. One almost never uses these colors unaltered straight out of the bottle to match the glazes on ceramics. Also, these acrylic colors have to be covered with a sealing coat to protect them, and to make them look like a glass-like glaze.

    • @marsgitar
      @marsgitar  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks for the compliment. The color I use for porcelain is some mixture of Golden brand acrylics and their mediums. Other than that, it's a color-matching operation. • @marsgitar
      @marsgitar  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thank you Yusdel! I use "Golden" brand acrylic paints. The way I match acrylic colors is: mix the color until it looks close to the color I need. Then I put a little spot of that color on the object I'm painting, and dry it; because acrylic colors are lighter when wet. When that color spot is dry I can see how I need to adjust the color in the direction I need to go. Then I repeat this process until I get the color I need. No magic, just mixing until I get it right. Solvent based colors don't change color when they dry.

    I have a Chinese Famille Rose early 1900's Porcelain Buddha that's perfect except it's missing one of the head's of a small child setting on it's shoulder. It has 5 children setting on the buddha and each of their heads has a hole on each side of the head to let out heat when it was being fired. I was thinking maybe someone could make a rubber mold of one of the other children's head which are all the same design and then attach it where one has a head missing that looks like a clean break or maybe was a defect when it was made and they never repaired it. I was wondering what it would cost for a repair like that .

    Martin, what’s the blue paint you used to paint the blue parts? I’m having some difficulties finding a similar hue blue for a project. Thanks a lot. Cheers

    • @marsgitar
      @marsgitar  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I use Golden brand acrylic paints. The blue I used here, I think, is called "Payne's Gray". You can make it yourself by mixing Ultramarine Blue and Carbon Black.

      I used a flat file for 99% of it . . . just filing to the contour of the vase walls. Finished with sandpaper.
