How to Use a Stud Finder

- I show how to use the most common type of stud finder.
The stud finder is sensing the density of the surface below it and letting you know when you run into a stud or joist. Most stud finders are designed to find the edge of the stud. You mark both sides of the stud with the stud finder then measure for the center.

Seriously. Before I found this youtube video and device, I wanted to just rip a part of my ceiling drywall off to hang my sound panels. (I made like 5 holes already looking for a joist) How genius is this device, thank you inventor.

Agreed and I can't tell you just how hard I agree!! Music should NOT even be allowed in diy videos. Only explanations and visual guides. And the music they choose is always just so cringe. They gonna kill me with their bad music taste before I even learn how to do anything 😂

Only just bought one can’t wait to use. All my life I tapped with the handle of a screwdriver listening to the note change, also quite accurate, about 90%. It’ll be interesting to see how the stud finder rates.
Thank you so much! I decided to finally buy a stud finder and thought I'd be able to understand the instruction manual, but I guess I needed a visual guide.
See, my dad was in bridge construction all his life and remodeled and sold homes. And so he is old school and used common knowledge in carpentry, blueprints, and the knocking method.
And I just think he has a bit too much faith in my nonexistent skills. So, I am so thankful for this video.
It was easy to understand in a short video with great visuals and explanation.

Thanks so much. I live in a Winnebago and bought Command strips to hang something but discovered that it probably won't work for this application. Gonna mount a retractable clothesline inside a closet. So I'm trying to learn and not put unnecessary holes into the walls so I appreciate your video. I hope I can find a device like yours. The studfinders I've used in the past had more of a magnet in it but I'd love to be able to gauge the width of what I'm about to screw into. I'd prefer finding wood than metal.

Interesting point about starting off over a stud. I am reading reviews on a few products and am confused on what to buy because people are saying that they only find 50% of the studs. I suspect that some folks just arent using them correctly. Thanks for the tips

Looks like this kind of tool works fine with drywall walls, because with wooden walls or wooden floors they give quite a lot bad readings. I think it's because of the density of the wood. Its density can be different in the same plank, because of knots and the the likes. But if the wood is quite uniform, it works!
