Before I left my fgc due to drama. Usually.alone I used to bring tons of consoles to a bar, and rent that bar for the whole day. It got open mario kart, traditional fg, and smash the whole day together with good music, live performances, food, beer, and tournament. I did it like once or twice a month for 2 years for a small local city here in Philippines it was really nice. Stuff like these reminds me why i loved doing it. Thanks for posting this obama. It feels real good being reminded of the amazing feeling as a event/community organizer.
Climax of Night (the only event I've been too outside of random cons) was kinda magical. Everyone super chill, people gathering round in the hall way after grand finale for mash, and getting hype with all the friends.

it was planned as the last one. SBO lost a lot of sponsorship support going into this year so that may have led to it being done as part of this other event
Nobody except true old heads remember, but SBO used to be THE highest skill cap tournament in the world. Winners of EVO would routinely get washed in the first round at SBO, and those who make it to 2nd round were considered greats. Too bad the tournament had to die afterward
People have good memories in FGC events where they have fun, where the competition is fire and where you make friends, but I doubt people will reminisce about the after parties that are the current trend in events, just set up casuals or some tournament with silly rules and have fun. I can't imagine what is going through an event organizers head when they think that they should throw an after party where the main and only appeal is booze, in a *GAMING* event
I started playing fighting games when SFV released, so hearing stories about older tournaments/events always amazes me. I wish i could have been there! Hopefully, when this pandemic ends, we get alot of fun events like SBO. Thanks for the story!
You can always check out the old games with emulators and find competitors with Fightcade 2 and Discord (I prefer Parsec and a good emulator to Fightcade 2, due to the latter's use of FinalBurn Neo).

Best tourneys I went to were the last Battle By the Bay and SBO 2010. Getting to see the EVOlution and meet all of the players I only saw on vids was super dope, and SBO '10 was paired with Tokyo Game Show that year so got to see EVERYTHING that was coming out and a dope ass tournament. It was gdlk!

The mat & mister tent evokes state fair memories, and the weird behavior of bugs makes me laugh. Creating feasible outdoor solutions to indoor only activities like this would change my world. Sun worship is so important and too many things require you be inside with dank lighting.
This was enlightening. I think the general impression of SBO 2012 online at the time was that it was a terrible mess, with those screen glare photos becoming a meme, that it was so bad it killed tougeki. But seeing how you describe it I can see how it was a fun time.
SBO except for this one is always a great event and the Toughest tournament of all... I always look forward every year for the TH-cam uploads most especially 3rd Strike... Good times.. 👍👍
Most special event to me was EVO2016, SFV was new and I was pretty decent and still pretty good at the game. I went to WNF so I knew some people out there and I got special treatment just for beating LTG on stream(Video is up on youtube MitoRequiem Vs Lowti3rgod) anyways even though it wasn't a really special win or anything I got a lot of respect for that also this was the first EVO I was of age to drink so people hooked it the fuck up with drinks including Alex Valle lmao. Also got invited to a ton of parties, went to Animeilluminati suite hung out with some people it was an awesome event. Also I believe this was the EVO I made it out of pools in more than one game not sure.
