Alex's parents were hippies in the 60s and they were disappointed that their oldest son was a conservative Republican but the other kids on the show were just kids they never expressed their political views. I loved this show as a kid but I doubt they could ever do a show like this today with so much hatred between both political parties. So sad.

Jennifer and Mallory were not on board with their parents hippie/left wing ideals. That happened all throughout the show. All the kids were like: c'mon get over it.
This show got me through a major depression in 2013. Binge watched this and family matters on Netflix when I had too much social and agoraphobic anxiety to basically do anything.
There are so many things I love about this show and I still watch it. One thing I really appreciate is that they were able represent both political parties. They did it in a joking, but respectful manner and at the end of the day, they didn’t let it get in the way of their ultimate goal of the love they had for each other. I wish we could all do the same. I’ve lost family and friends just over my political party or not voting their way, without even a discussion and it’s heartbreaking.
I agree. They initially intended for Alex to be sort of a joke as a Republican (left wing Hollywood). But MJF made the character so likable that it didn't turn out that way.
Tom Hanks was already a well known actor when he made appearances on Family Ties. He had just wrapped a successful TV sitcom of his own "Bosom Buddies, 1980-81-82," in witch he was a main character. Nor was "Big," his first success.

Both Michael & Meredith have said that 'Meredith would come pick him up in the morning to get to the set. When shooting BTTF & Family Ties the BTTF producers had a station wagon with a bed in the back for him to sleep on when driving to the set.

I loved "Family Ties" as a kid, and I've seen it on late-night cable a few times in recent years. I don't own the DVDs yet, but I've considered buying them. I have read Michael's first two biographies, but I still need to buy the third one. The show was mostly harmless, and very funny - I wish executives and studios would create more content like this now.
I’d heard Reagan was a fan of Family Ties. Tracy Pollan is introduced in Family Ties in the fourth season premiere. It’s a two part episode named “The Real Thing.” Great episode. Tracy recurred throughout the fourth season, but she appears in flashbacks and out of order episodes later in the series. She is in clip shows of the series.
It was a 1980's show, we were coming up into the 90's. It had a good run. Cast growing up, it ran it's course. I'm watching it for the past few days. I laugh at it quite a bit. Ellen and Alex. I watched her leave yesterday. I felt for Alex, trying to get over it gets a date with a perfectly fine young woman and he keeps trying to make her Ellen. Then he comes home after it ends ugly, with that song playing "What did you think.... I would do, at this moment" and he writes her in Paris. And today, Alex with Cortney Cox character (Laren???). I remember the Tom Hanks alcoholic uncle Ned episode back when it aired. That was a good episode. I never forgot it. My mom the loved the show, so it's one of those shows especially in the start. Yeah I like it and the theme song is yet another one of those 1970's 80's themes that brings me back to a time. Then the outro theme and you always knew what tag would be at the end of the outro of whatever show "sit Ubu sit.... Good dog" sometimes I'd be listen to shows from my bed. I'm watching it on Pluto now.
This is my favorite sitcom of all time, tied with Married...With Children and Seinfeld. I love plenty sitcoms, from all decades, but these are my favorites! Michael J. Fox was also an amazingly talented actor DURING Family Ties. I knew Reagan dug the show. I remember Tom Hanks being on the show. I knew of Michael J. and Tracy being married. I even knew about Nick's proposed spinoff, lol! Ayyyyyyyy! I knew of Michael J.'s transportation woes. I remember River Phoenix being on there, and Wil. Corey, I don't remember. Must re-watch for him, lol! Remember Michael J. working on Family Ties and "Future" simultaneously, as well. The show ran from my 6th grade year through my senior year. Discovered it in 7th grade(don't know how I didn't learn of it earlier!), and watched faithfully for seasons 2-7. Didn't realize until just now that the ratings had dropped so heavily. Hated to see it go! Luckily, I have the complete series box set.
The ratings wasn’t the real reason the show ended. I saw a reunion show and Goldberg let it out the bag to the surprise and apparent consternation of the other actors that the network wanted another season but Michael J. Fox turned it down. You could tell Michael Gross and Meredith Baxter weren’t too thrilled to find this out. Goldberg probably had a bit of grudge for MJF turning it down as these last season are often big paydays.
Facts Verse: I do have one more fact about Family Ties! Do you know that at the end of show you see a dog calling UBU Production company. The dog turned out to be Gary David Goldberg's dog UBU. He the company after his own dog. You do heard Gary's voice saying "Sit UBU Sit. Good Dog and a bark at the end! You have a nice day!
He did in an episode where Alex and his buddies went up to Canada on his 18th birthday to get some action, then his mother showed up just when they met some older girls at a bar.
I remember Hanks on it and the Stand by me group. I knew it died off because like many shows, when they change the time slot it is killer. Hanks made Volunteers around same time he guested stared on it
Family Ties didn't become a hit until the Cosby show premiered in 1984. The ratings of the first two seasons were very low. Family Ties rode off the coattails of the Cosby phenomenon during the time. When NBC remove Family Ties right after the Cosby Show to Sunday nights ratings collapsed.
What? Family Ties was NEVER cancelled. I've seen countless interviews and everybody was just ready to move on. The network would've loved it to had continue but Gary David Goldberg and everyone else felt the show was ready to end.
Well what hurt was getting taken away from that sweet Cosby lead in. Cosby was still a top 5 show and that automatically makes whatever comes after a giant hit too. Also the show while imo still mostly funny and had some great episodes in season 7 you could tell it was winding down and was time to go before it got bad, like The Simpsons level bad lol n

Tom Hanks and Geena Davis guest starred on Family Ties and were in the incredible film A League Of Their Own together. that i remember. forgot about the Stand By Me kids
Nick didn’t grunt. He said, “Hey” and nothing more (no pun intended) sometimes. In the family ties box that, they included the pilot “the art of Nick” so we can actually watch the pilot now
This channel always has lots of errors. But yes, he was tv famous in Bosom Buddies. His film career took longer to take off. Though Bachelor Party was around the time he was on Family Ties.
I’m more surprised that even back then they decided not to have a show reunion at some point. I always loved the show because of their great characters/actors and the story lines that they covered.
When the show ended, it was said at that time. Meredith Baxter Birney didn't like that Michael J. Fox was more popular than she was. She was the name that had the pull when the sitcom started.
There was a whole generation that had watched the hippies be crazy and they totally identified with the Alex Keeton character back then. Wasn’t her fault, just Michael J Fox was putting on the screen the way we felt about a lot of things.
3:20 "After Family Ties he went on on to become an amazingly talented actor" NO , he was already an amazingly talented actor. After Family Ties he only became more successful.
Michael got his first major start in the mid-1970s, starring in the Canadian TV series "Leo and Me". His first American efforts were "Midnight Madness" in 1980, and "Class of 1984", made in 1982. But "Family Ties" was really what launched him into the mainstream, and then "Back to the Future" sent him even higher.
Well, they had the triplets, the two younger boys, a new family for the audience to get use to. Most assumed, when Robbie got his '3 sons', the camera on the family went with the younger generation. But I do remember Steve being there a lot for Dodie, if not Chip and Ernie. Fred MacMurray was also doing stuff for Disney at that time, too.
I remember when Family Ties was one of the best TV shows of all time that made Michael J. Fox a superstar and an icon!!! I thought they was supposed to do an 8th season of Family Ties for the 1989-1990 season all the other shows on NBC cancelled in 1989 are Sale Of The Century, Super Password, Miami Vice, One To Grow On, Family Ties, Highway to Heaven, The Smurfs all disappeared whatever happened to that!! Michael J. Fox had a successful TV and movie career and Michael Gross too!!! But why did Tina Yothers never got any other acting roles to come her way since the show was cancelled That's what I like to know about it!!! Thank you!!!!
My favorite line in the series said by Andy "Alex said, if you want to win vote Republican." I was heartbroken to later find out that Michael J. Fox is a Democrat. The problem I saw with the series is that they had too many flashback episodes. I know many TV shows have these but usually only once. Family Ties did it too often.
Mine was, his first line on his debut episode. This is when he was still a mini-Alex. He had a tiny 3-piece suit, tie, and dress shoes on. Can't remember who, but someone in the family told him:"Andy, you look like a million bucks." Andy promptly replied:"Tax-free!"
I challenge any of you to watch the two part episode when Alex examines why he is alive while his friends are dead and not feel something during the show.
It was ridiculous. I saw it on it's first run and the Fox character seemed completely different to every other episode. It was really terrible. And Fox is a rubbish actor. He was very very lucky. Spin city was rubbish.
@@joeymorvant161 I understood that episode very well. In my high school, around the same time, 5 of the junior varsity baseball players, and a few good friends of mine, crashed in a Ford Escort. The car broke in half and the back seat passengers died. I could relate to what Alex was going through. No I wasn't supposed to be in the car, but some of us still had some of the same guilty thoughts. The ironic thing is that Justine was enrolled in my class so it was her school as well when this happened. The accident happened in 1983 so she was already enrolled with us at that time. Thinking about it now, maybe that had as effect on those episodes being written.
@@mexicanspec That is so sad! Not to take away from everything else you said(I promise), but you went to school with Justine Bateman?!!!!!? It truly is sad the accident happened, more so because you lost friends. This is obviously decades ago, but still, my condolences for your loss.
No that’s not true. Gary believed they should go out on top. I watched all of his interviews. Years later he and MJF said they should’ve done a. 8th year.
No, I was surprised that Meredith Baxter Birney switched sides and became a lesbian. Maybe they should have created a spinoff "Untying The Family Ties." By the way, Kirk Cameron did the same thing and married his girlfriend on the show. Plus, they had a better theme song.
This was a show I was fanatical about so I know weird little wheels within wheels about it and pop culture at large surrounding the show at the time. Reading all the comments, I wanted to put in my two cents, even on the points people already made with a couple of specifics and clarifications, like... 1) Yes, Tom Hanks was just coming off his own recently cancelled sitcom when he became a real journeyman actor at this time, doing three episodes in total on Family Ties alone. But Bachelor Party he shot and was a box office hit, then came Splash, then in the same summer of '85, he had the one-two punch misfires of Volunteers and The Man with One Red Shoe, the former being where he met and co-starred with his future wife Rita Wilson. Then Nothing In Common and The Money Pit. Also, the movie Punchline came out the same year as Big. 2) Michael began filming Back to the Future in January of the new year 1985 just as everyone was returning to work after the holidays. He famously wouldn't have a day off again for five months as the production on BTTF was racing against the clock (!) to meet their July 3rd release date, that had already been pushed back to buy the production time. He got something closer to 2 hours of sleep a day and they had to film 7 days a week all the way through to make up time, but also take advantage of the weekend where Michael was free from Family Ties as they taped the show every Friday night. After they wrapped that week's episode, he would go straight to the BTTF set and be there from Friday night to Monday morning at dawn. Saturday and Sundays were the only days they had Michael available to shoot outside day scenes on location early on in the shoot. They shot the 50's town square scenes first on the Universal lot so they could do a lot of day for night shooting to get as much done as they could, pushing actual travel outdoor location work to later in the schedule when Family ties would wrap for their 3rd Season in mid-March. After that, the BTTF train went full steam ahead from mid-March to, yes, late June non-stop. Michael and the entire crew went into overtime penalities on a daily basis which was worked into the budget, already way in the hole for the $6 million they spent filming with Eric Stoltz and now reshooting all over again with Michael. It's insane that in the primitive days of analog technology for effects houses, the movie was able to work around the clock and get all it's special effects finished and look fantastic, score movie with an iconic theme and nobody on the cast or crew, but especially Michael J. don't collapse from exhaustion. Or worse. Five months of only 2 hours of sleep, stolen in the daylight of early morning because teamsters literally put a passed out Fox in a pick upved, drove him to his house, picked him up and put him in his bed of his house, and then waited 2 hours to wake him up and start it all over again. Personal theory: I read Rob Lowes memoirs about his time as a teen idol and movie star in the 80's where cocaine was always around, on every set. It was a different time and bygone culture about such things. But, everyone on movie sets basically did coke, casual or Charlie Sheen levels. Rob confesses he was the later. He doesn't come out and say it, but it's implied that his time on the democratic star bus to campaign for the democratic presidential hopeful there was a lot of insane partying going on and that coke and whiskey was their nightly matinee star diet, and the coke, as well as other things, was heavily involved in the 5 month brutal shooting schedule of early 1985 that was Michael's life to somehow get through it and pull it off. Michael at the time refered to this period as his: Year of living dangerously. I think this is why and had a darker connotation to it than anyone could've realized. It gets darker. A lot of studies can relate hard drug use and alcohol abuse in short, but concentrated periods of time can be a direct link to the physical deteriation symptoms that is Parkinson's decease. So, his Championship Season, as it were, where it looked like at the time, Michael flirted with disaster, tempted date and somehow seemed to cheat death, might have had a toll taken in the long term later on down the line. But, it's only a theory. Regardless, it is still a helluva an accomplishment and no one in the entertainment industry comes close to matching that crazy feat and it netting a movie classic out of it all. 3) The show was moved to Sunday nights in its 6 and 7th seasons where it did fall in the ratings, losing their cushy Cosby Show lead in, but they still won their time slot every week out of all the network shows both seasons and was regularly in the top 30. Toward the end of season 7, BTTF 2 was ramping up and filming actually had gone under way the last month of production on Family Ties so history repeated itself once more as Michael had to do double duty again, but BTTF 2 pushed any major scenes back till Family Ties wrapped up. But, the network wanted them to return for an 8th season. Everyone was ready to move on creatively, but it was Michael who ultimately pulled the plug, as he could only film a movie on Family Ties' summer hiatus the last year's and was desperately wanting to concentrate fully now on his film career so it was determined and Family Ties finished their series run with a special hour long send off episode that was the number one rated show for that week. They went out on top. Family Ties was not cancelled or suffering from any low ratings. 4) Michael J. Fox filmed a movie on his 1987 hiatus from Family Ties (between seasons 5 and 6) called Bright Lights, Big City. There was personal rejiggering behind the scenes and a change of director at the last minute, so a delay in filming and some parts for recast because some actors had prior commitments and couldn't wait around. One of those roles was his kind of potential love interest in the film. Michael immediately made phone calls to get Tracy Pollan in the movie and that part. It had been two years since they acted together and saw one another for her one single season of Family Ties in season 4 and he was still smitten with her, had heard she just broken up with her long term boyfriend of 7 years (Kevin Bacon!) and he didn't waste his opening and opportunity. The movie is largely forgotten, unfairly, but is remembered for being the film Michael and Tracy fell in love, got married a year later and had 4 children and still strong in 2020. 5) Michael is a serious savage. He can really go into beast mode, focus on the overwhelminly so called insurmountable odds of certain life challenges and rise up to them, face them down and do it with harm, wit and a really unique core inner strength where he seems to have a core foundation made from properties directly from the planet Krypton. He still my hero, moreso than ever before. And this show was, and still is, just bloody brilliant.
Weren’t the producers of BTTF interested in Michael even before they cast Eric? Did you see the reunion when Goldberg let it out the bag that the real reason the Family Ties was cancelled was because MJF turned it down. The actors who played the parents looked surprised and annoyed. They seemed to be under the impression that it was the network that had cancelled them. That was interesting to see their reactions.
It wasn't just that they saw MJF, it was that Eric Stolz wasn't funny and they needed someone who could make the jokes land so after a month of shooting, they fired Stolz. Imagine BTTF without MJF's comedic skills. Would never have been such a success.
The mother on the show seemed like a narcissistic individual. She would always get her way one way or another from Jennifer,Mallory,Alex especially the father. Elyse says before the forth child is introduced. Now that Jennifer,Mallory and Alex are old enough to take care of themselves. She can finally go back to work. Then episode later they have Andy. Episode S3 E19 Bringing Up Baby. The parents start selfishly wanting alone time together. They get annoyed with the original three siblings as well the forth when he starts to cry. Again. Elyse wants to go back to work. Right after the forth kid.
Like other 80s kids, we grew up on weekly TV episodes. We had to wait 7 fricken days before we could watch the next episode! My kids think that's ridiculous and hilarious at the same time lol. Family Ties was worth the wait, though, it was a fun show to watch. MJFox rocks!!
With all the remakes of classics happening, I’d be interested in seeing a relaunch of Family Ties in 2021 with the script flipped with the parents being ultra conservative and the kids being modern day liberals.
I’m not a big fan of the tv show reboots that has happened the last few years with fuller house one day at a time party of 5 the wonder years and the latest head of the class it shows that Hollywood had run out of ideas so they just take something from 20-30 years ago and redo it instead of coming up with a new idea

It's so hard to believe the 70s and 80s were so wholesome back then and family oriented compared to how it is now. Most of us I believe (even minorities) grew up in two parent households and everything revolved around family. That's even if there were a few divorcee parents b/c granny, auntie or cousins would take them in. Now you'd never know we grew up in wholesome times.
I loved this show. I watched it when it originally aired and then again in syndication. I caught the guest appearances of both Tom Hanks and Wil Wheaton, and knew he'd married Tracey Pollan. She and Michael didn't date during the series, but met again and started dating while making the movie Bright Lights, Big City.
I have to call out the narrator for the Tom Hanks comments. He said Tom Hanks was barely known at all. He had a sitcom “Bosom Buddies” that aired for 3 years from 1980-1982. There wasn’t all these cable channels or internet back then. People watched what was on TV and the fact that it was on for 3 years means people actually watched his sitcom. He made an episode on Happy Days, which led to him teaming up with Ron Howard to make the hit “Splash” which was filmed in March of 1983. Splash cost $8 million and grossed almost $70 million. I’m not sure if the narrator just wanted to make a comment about Tom Hanks so he just threw something together real quick?! At least make it accurate
Right! It's hard enough to get a hit. Those in charge should allow them to ride it out. Even if a new show could become a hit, because of the time slot, you would still be losing a possible decade of the original hit. For what? Ones that sometimes get cancelled, before they get a full year in? Not a good enough gamble for most people.
We even got Family Ties in Ireland when I was a kid. Great show. Good lessons to be learned. Sadly, so many of the modern shows are just about sex and demons. pure rot
HELP... Isn't there an episode of this show that has The Beatles song "In My Life" in it. The actual Beatles version, not the Mom (Meredith Baxter Birney) and Dad(Michael Gross) singing it. I could have sworn there is a scene, a montage, showing the whole family through the years and John Lennon singing "In my life". Does anyone know the episode?? Maybe it was another 80s or 90s TV show, but I'm pretty sure it was Family Ties.
You might be thinking of the TV show which had a autistic kid as the main character. Can't remember the name of the show, but I thought it was a decade later.

True. Always crushed on Mallory. Wow! Mr. Keaton was very good at playing off Alex. Both have great comedic timing.

This show got me through a major depression in 2013. Binge watched this and family matters on Netflix when I had too much social and agoraphobic anxiety to basically do anything.
How are doing now? It's been several years.
"Bosom Buddies" was a funny show that ABC let die in the abyss.

I was most surprised Scott Valentine thought he was getting paid TOO much? Really? 😯. Too bad Uber didn’t exist back then for MJF to get to work
He was a classically-trained actor who acted like a moron on the show
@@fredwerza3478 The end of the video asks if u were most surprised about Pollen and Fox marrying in real life or that Tom Hanks was on the show. Neither surprised me.

If a network wants to end a show they just move the time slot.
Facts Verse: I do have one more fact about Family Ties! Do you know that at the end of show you see a dog calling UBU Production company. The dog turned out to be Gary David Goldberg's dog UBU.

Only thing that surprised me was it’s drop in ratings. It is insane how much a time change can effect a tv show.

When the show ended, it was said at that time. Meredith Baxter Birney didn't like that Michael J. Fox was more popular than she was. She was the name that had the pull when the sitcom started.
I'd heard that.
There was a whole generation that had watched the hippies be crazy and they totally identified with the Alex Keeton character back then. Wasn’t her fault, just Michael J Fox was putting on the screen the way we felt about a lot of things.

3:20 "After Family Ties he went on on to become an amazingly talented actor"
NO , he was already an amazingly talented actor.
My three sons was on for twelve years and Fred hardly appeared in the later seasons. It was wonderful.
We're glad to know that you love the show. Thank you for sharing your thoughts. If we may ask, which episode did you like the best?
The Real Thing, Remembering Of Things Past, A My Name is Alex, The Series Finale of Alex Doesn't Live Here Anymore!!!
Show was getting old. I mean Alex and Mallory were in college or out. Fourth kid was Mini Alex. Not as cute.
Like Robbie Rist
I hated it being cancelled.
The main takeaway I got is I had no idea that the ratings were dropping so low by the final season.
Me, neither! I simply followed it to it's new night!

No that’s not true. Gary believed they should go out on top. I watched all of his interviews. Years later he and MJF said they should’ve done a. 8th year.
I was more surprised that you didn't feature more Mallory in this video.
No, I was surprised that Meredith Baxter Birney switched sides and became a lesbian. Maybe they should have created a spinoff "Untying The Family Ties."
By the way, Kirk Cameron did the same thing and married his girlfriend on the show.
Plus, they had a better theme song.
The show could teach us a lot right now.
*with charm, wit and strength* Not harm, auto-correct, CHARM*
Weren’t the producers of BTTF interested in Michael even before they cast Eric? Did you see the reunion when Goldberg let it out the bag that the real reason the Family Ties was cancelled was because MJF turned it down. The actors who played the parents looked surprised and annoyed. They seemed to be under the impression that it was the network that had cancelled them. That was interesting to see their reactions.
@@gutenbird Eric stolz was cast for bttf but the directors saw Michael wanted him so dropped Eric cast Michael instead
It wasn't just that they saw MJF, it was that Eric Stolz wasn't funny and they needed someone who could make the jokes land so after a month of shooting, they fired Stolz. Imagine BTTF without MJF's comedic skills. Would never have been such a success.
Fitting this show ended in 1989,It exemplifies the 80s

The mother on the show seemed like a narcissistic individual. She would always get her way one way or another from Jennifer,Mallory,Alex especially the father.
Elyse says before the forth child is introduced. Now that Jennifer,Mallory and Alex are old enough to take care of themselves. She can finally go back to work. Then episode later they have Andy. Episode S3 E19 Bringing Up Baby. The parents start selfishly wanting alone time together. They get annoyed with the original three siblings as well the forth when he starts to cry. Again. Elyse wants to go back to work. Right after the forth kid.

Most of us I believe (even minorities) grew up in two parent households and everything revolved around family. That's even if there were a few divorcee parents b/c granny, auntie or cousins would take them in. Now you'd never know we grew up in wholesome times.
It is awesome to watch family ties on television
How you comment 1 day before it was released
WTF HOW YOUR COMMENT IS 1 DAY AGO !!!!!!!
Definitely Tom Hanks. That was really surprising.
That's a perfect reason to cancel a show, very poor ratings.
I knew ALL these facts. So nothing new to me. 😂😂😂😂
When a top rated show is moved..this is what happens...they should have left it alone
We agree, puppycat58!
Sadly, so many of the modern shows are just about sex and demons. pure rot
We're happy to know that you're a fan of the show. In your opinion, what is its best episode?
Modern day Leave It to Beaver for the 80s.
Well said, we strongly concur! Thank you for watching our content and for sharing your thoughts. What other types of video would you like to see?

@@deannasisson5751 "Life Goes On" with Corky ?? Ob la di ob la da was the song on there
