  • In this video I take your through how I care for and condition my vegetable tanned leather wallet/key holder. I use Saphir Leather Lotion, which is specifically made to condition all kinds of leather goods (such as handbags, jackets, and wallets). This cream also works great on conditioning the leather straps and accents on Louis Vuitton pieces - I hope to do a video on that soon!

    To start off I use both products, and I'm a dress shoe fanatic. Both function generally the similarly, but they're not the same. Renovateur (Reno) has more solvents and cleaners in it than Lotion, so if your product has a painted patina it may be affected. Also Reno is a much concentrated product, and thus conditions more. 10ml of Reno vs 30ml of Lotion and Reno still wins hands down in terms of conditioning.
    For more delicate leather products like goatskin or boxcalf, I would suggest using Saphir's Nappa Leather Balm. Renovateur is way too strong for these leathers. The Nappa balm doesn't contain any solvents, so its much better for these stuff. For large items like jackets and bags, I suggest using Saphir Canadian Cream or their Creme Universalle (Universal Cream). Canadian restores color and nourishes the leather and Creme Universalle is a multi purpose product for almost all leathers except suede and nubuck. Saves you quite a bit of money, but it is insufficient for dry leather. For dry leather use mink oil.
    For cleaning, Saphir has various cleaning products that are pretty good, as long as the product isn't too dirty. If the product is light colored, it best to just clean it then use leather paint to make it look like new. I hope my comment helps anyone who watches this great video!

      @@mcmickey3344 Really enjoyed the video! Saphir may be a bit expensive for some, and with infrequent usage the stuff may dry out especially if not stored correctly. I'd say go for Saphir for people with leather shoes also (shoes use up quite a bit of the stuff), but get cheaper alternatives like Tarrago or Collonil if only used for small leather products

    Great to see someone conditioning a leather wallet! Saphir also makes a Delicate Cream and a Médaille d'Or Napa Leather Cream, both products made with Jojoba Oil and Wheat Protein and no wax if you don't want a soft sheen finish.

    My first wallet I messed up and darken the crap out of it by using my boot oil on it. I’ve had to replace the wallet due to the plastic ID portion failing and now I’m going to use natural color cream lotion on my new wallet.

      Mink oil may leave an oily sheen, especially if the leather is chrome tanned and sometimes it may not absorb mink oil as well. Mink oil is real hardcore stuff and should only be used once or twice at most per year. Renovateur or Saphir lotion is good enough

    What’s the difference between the leather lotion and the renevatuer in terms of keeping the leather protected?

    • @hanwenyap
      @hanwenyap 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I use both products for shoes. Renovateur is the really good stuff, but be careful as it has some cleaning agents in it (very mild though). If you have a painted patina then you might want to skip it. I use Renovateur on my shoes every 3 months. Saphir has limited edition round jars now. Get them before they sell out.
      Lotion on the other hand is milder and can be used more frequently, plus it has little to no cleaners in it. I feel that Lotion is slightly more runny, and Renovateur's more thick. Either one is fine.
      For really refined products, get the Nappa Leather Balm. If you don't want to invest the money for different products for different leathers, use the Creme Universalle (Universal Cream). It can be used for all leathers except suede and nubuck. You can find a video here: th-cam.com/video/Axru1-5G7UU/w-d-xo.html

      @@matthoffman6962 Happy to help! Read my full comment in this video for more info. Honestly speaking Saphir is way too expensive if you just have a handful of leather products. Bick 4 is good enough (if you live in the US). Having a jar of Renovateur or Lotion is good if you have at least 2 or more pairs of quality leather dress shoes to maintain. Otherwise, just get any leather lotion with good reviews and it should do the trick.

      I don't think you necessarily need to condition a new or near new wallet... just when you see it showing signs of wear and you want to help rejuvenate it, then you can condition it.

      My brand new wallet is very dull and want to give it a little sheen so I’m going to hit it with lotion and my hors hair brush and buff off with mist of water. Similar to my dress shoes.
