    I've never heard of conditioning with saddle soap. I use it to clean very dirty leather with some water and a brush so it gets nicely lathered up. My experience is that it's a great cleaner that dries the leather out a bit, not a conditioner at all. I always have to condition after using saddle soap. It leaves a film because you're supposed to use it with water and wipe it off, just like you wouldn't use soap as a hand lotion.

    Thanks for the love Rose Anvil! Would love to send you our Water Protectant No. 3 formula as it was specifically formulated to protect leather against the elements/moisture/water/snow/etc. The beautiful thing about this protectant is that it is able to provide a high level of water repellency WITHOUT clogging up the pores of the leather. This allows the leather to continue to breathe, which is super important. As you likely know, all of our products are not only made from ALL-NATURAL, but cosmetic grade ingredients. Don't hesitate to reach out should you have questions at any time! Cheers.

    I use mink oil for my walking boots and I often walk in very wet conditions. For the best reults you need to leave them for at least 12 hours after application.

    • @Nathan-zw7nq
      @Nathan-zw7nq หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      I combine the mink oil with sno seal for my work boots. After cleaning with saddle soap I put a light coat of mink oil on, let it set for 24 hours and then apply a light coat of sno seal by heating up the sno seal until it’s liquid and applying it with a cloth. Let it dry for an hour, buff it and then repeat with a second coat. And that work boot won’t need another application of sno seal for 3 months, and I saddle soap and condition them with mink oil once a year. Other than that, I just brush them daily after wearing them.

    The Best? The best I've used is Obenauf's, they have a wax and a oil. They do darken the leather quite a bit, but if you're worried about work boots that aren't meant to be pretty, Obenauf's is fantastic. I've brought weathered and sundried saddlebags back from the dead with that stuff, really impressive.

    Love your videos. You are obvioisly a gifted leather worker. However, these are fair criticisms. And it's nice to see a few mistakes sometimes. Reminds us TH-camrs don't always have a team of writers.
    But yes sir, there are a few things to note. The saddle soap as many others have pointed out. It's purely a cleaner. It is important to apply with a wet applicator only after rubbing the applicator on the soap cake until it begins to froth. Then either wipe off immediately, or lit it dry then brush off. The discoloration you noted with the saddle soap is a result of it drying out the leather beneath. That's when you would reach for the other items you have in this video.
    As far as the conditioners you have in your video, they each have their strengths for specific use cases. The mink oil is an excellent choice for restoring older leather pieces. It also contains natural water resistant properties. Not as strong as the Aussie, but certainly better than the other items.
    I say that, but the leather conditioner has the potential to give the mink oil a run for it's money. Depending on the type. Fiebings leather balm has atom wax mixed in with it. This serves as a wax coating when buffed in.
    The Aussie is great for purses or handbags that are exposed to the elements due to it's higher water resistance. This is owed to it's petroleum base with need wax additive. All great products depending on what you need to use it on.
    Just taking the chance to return the favor for all of the knowledge you've shared to everyone that has watched your excellent videos!

    Good comparison. When cleaning my saddle and horse gear saddle soap works into the leather best when the applicator is quite damp. The moisture on the applicator allows the saddle soap to lather up which allows best cleaning and penetration.

      As am I. I was taught to always make sure I followed up the saddle soap with a conditioner on all surfaces, just more or less depending on what part of the saddle it was. You could always tell on the saddles when someone forgot the conditioner, they would look dry and matted. Maybe it's different for the leather used in shoes.

    For lighter coloured leathers, I was advised that using a vegetable-based conditioner/proofer will darken the colour a lot less than a product that uses animal-based oils. Supposedly extra virgin coconut has exactly the same properties when applied to leather as mink oil. Do you have experience with using coconut oil or a vegetable-based product (Saphir offers one such product called Everest Dubbin) ?

    Hey just a tip. I noticed you said that some left residue behind. As far as I know the Aussie is supposed to be buffed off. I imagine the others are the same. The saddle soap is supposed to be rinsed off I don’t think it’s supposed to go on without rinsing. I could be wrong but I have a good bit of experience with saddle soap and Aussie. The hazing you see is the wax in the products that should be buffed off. Hope this helps. Thanks! -Mike

    very good video. all i have at home is the mink oil and i've been using that to condition my leather bags - so far no major issues. i find it to work the best on smooth leather (as it indicated on the oil container) , but i also use them on the pebble leather bags.

    What happened to the D on the DuPont sign? Also, I personally think Obenauf's Heavy Duty LP (leather preservative) is one of the best overall leather treatments out there, it conditions, nourishes, softens it up some, and waterproofs as well. And if your leather is really dry, their Leather Oil will seriously saturate and help to make it more supple than ever. It's good stuff! Have you ever tried it? I'd assume so.

    It may be a silly question, but do conditioners ever serve the purpose of closing the pores in the leather or serve to build a hydrophobic layer?
    I thought they were to rehydrate & nourish the leather, since they go beneath a coat of wax or bsalm or top coat of some kind they would impede the penetration of the protective products if they closed the leather pores? I use them as a pre-treatment 30mins-12 hours before a polish.
    This is just my piece-meal logic at play.

    Obenauf's oil and grease comparison on those leathers. Maybe also add nicks 1964 leather as well. Will saddle soap darken your leather like it did if you work it into a lather and scrub with a brush and then wipe it off?

My question is, what is the best way to return the leather to a softer more pliable leather instead of the 80 years of dried out leather? Is that even possible? Would I water soak it and then go back and use a leather oil or cream? Any help you can give would be super great. Thank you in advance. Cheers, Layne

      I think you're right, but a lot of people (I would expect most, honestly) use it like a leather conditioner, just like they showed in this video. When I bought my Red Wing boots, I asked if they sold saddle soap because i wanted a cleaner, and they said they didn't carry it because it wasn't a good conditioner. They seemed confused when I said I wanted it to clean the leather, not condition it.

    • @dickiedollop
      @dickiedollop 5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      notreallydaedalus it’s a really good cleanser I think , over the weekend I gave my Alfred Sergeants a good lathering wiped clean and allowed to dry then applied Wrens dark brown leather cream diligently worked in and left to dry over night buffed them up and did a final going over with cherry blossom dark brown hard (well more waxed consistency) allowed to sit on overnight again and a final buff with a horsehair brush and selvyt cloth, by my own admission I think even the most demanding drill sergeant would have been impressed lol I find polishing my leather shoes and belts therapeutic and makes me feel good wearing them even if others don’t just don’t get it.
