Very inspiring Koa. Getting off alcohol, weed, drugs and staying clean and healthy is one of the best decisions you can make in life. I think you inspired a lot with this film, well done.
So inspirational bro, I had an accident with a saw and lost the end of my thumb. I work with my hands and got pretty depressed after, feeling incomplete and like I would never be the same. I had a pretty emotional mushroom trip and it really made me realise that I’m the same person I was before and I have so much to live for and so much to do. I quit smoking and drinking, started stretching and meditating and watched my world transform. I’m gonna come back to this whenever I need motivation. Thank you Koa and family
Jezus KOA . I broke my back at 4 places hitting a reef in Brittany. Mental surfering. Psilocibine had a great shift for me too. In tears about this great documentary. Love you mate. Thanks
Woww, believe it or not. But thar was insane, I just watched it and at the deepest point of the video when Koa was talking about being in the river questioning life, a little earthquake was going on in my room. I mean I am in Guatemala and with all the volcanos this might be a normal thing, but watching this with headphones having goosebumps and then your bed and rooms starts to shake, man life is crazy in a beautiful way! Thanks for sharing Koa🤍
Love the metaphor. Takes courage to go under and strength to resurface. Everything, every moment, is always brand new isn't it. I've heard that the use of Psilocybin as a therapy for depression has so far been successful. It definitely needs to be explored further. This is a great share, may you and yours be always blessed.
After having several (many) TBIs I can relate to this. Never knew that mushrooms might help. I will try anything to get off big pharma. Now I just need to move back to Hawaii, I was more at peace there than anywhere I have lived. Thank you Koa.
Thank you for making the decision to share your mushroom experience, giving much room for a fun guy. But seriously, you never know who you're inspiring, and making that decision - it's clear in the comment section that you've inspired many. Great filming/editing too, watched this a few times now!
What an amazing ride Thank you Koa Smith and the Gang at MUD/WTR As someone who has never been surfing I felt like I was on the board with Koa and going through the ride of both hurt and healing while on a surfboard. The best part for me is showing people that there is HEALING in this world and it can be achieved through the Help, Love and Insight of mother nature. Awesome Work!!! 😊
Had the same wipeout at Nias. Not quite as big swell but close. Also had a bumpy road with mental health. You're lucky you had good family and friends with you for your journey back to happiness. Lost my cousin to suicide last year. Sister 20 years ago. Great to see you managed to come back. Always think of Andy Irons when times get tough. Remember I'm also lucky to be here and still surfing at close to 50. Hope to see you guys back in Indo some time. :)
omg this is so touching. I've been losing myself lately but I felt like I kinda sprang back and noticed what actually I wanna live for after watching this beautiful vid. Thx Koa😣🙏
Thank you Koa your story is both real and magical and yes you helped me in stepping out of dark thoughts and keep on breathing and finding answers in meditation and stillness Yes you are right it is a lot of work but it is worth it ❤ your search for truth will make you reach excellence
This was good to see. I went through a similar journey. Took me around 5years to feel like myself again. Glad your struggle was shorter and glad your back surfing.
I needed that....we all ask too much of ourselves...to reset is one of the hardest and humbling things we can do as humans, it strips back the layers of your ego, till its just you..not many people have the courage or the strength to do what you did Koa, but if we all could, imagine how many more people could be saved from themselves by themselves.
Koa, I had a similar experience after a polo accident in France. Locked in now in ways hard to explain but so grateful. Truly happy for you- keep still, and keep soaking it all in.
So good! Made me think about how fragile we are if we are in a dark time in our lives. Thanks Kao for sharing an awesome part of your life with everyone!
That was incredible! Really wish it went for a bit longer. Such an inspiring story but just in general the way Koa lives his life is inspiring. Such a grounded human.
Wonderful, beautiful message and footage. I believe you could profile each of the family members and they could present an equally spiritual, mature and meaningful story full of Aloha. And I, too, would enjoy a longer version of this one. Imua, Koa!
I've experienced a spinal injury that is akin this this experience. Mahalo for such a lovely film. I felt energy flowing through my spine while watching this. It was so wholesome to hear all of this!
What a beautiful story Koa. And I loved when your brother said sometimes he feels like he's talking to his grandfather, how sweet is that! Good for you, keep doing what you're doing buddy! ❤
super inspiring! this film really brought to light the value of healing and looking inwards. you can recover from any trauma or any past demons that hold you back but it all takes time. those 5 months Koa went through seemed to be a necessary journey to shape who he is now. keep doing what you are doing king👑
I just got a response about "Steak Knife". Tell Koa that I show his TH-cam “Resurfacing” every year to my large Neuroscience class when we go over mental health and how important it is to open up our minds to holistic treatments. Tell him to look me up if he is ever in LA. I am a USC neuroscientist by trade, but more of a lifelong surfer, I live in Laguna Niguel and I surf Cottons point at Trestles mostly. John
Awesome, we’ll done Koa and thanks for sharing your story. Inspiring to see you living with purpose. I’ve had a brain injury which forced me to start life again from scratch, losing all my cognitive memory. I think going to that depth and coming back is a beautiful wake up call and I know within myself being the best version of me is going to help so many people. I started medicinal treatment with the shrooms last year and my inner connection and life purpose is solid and flowing. I want to acknowledge you for sharing your experience and standing tall within yourself. Thank you
Very cool Koa - Well done 🤙 I didn't know you suffered from that surf accident. You definitely are a driven soul and found your inner peace. I will share your journey with a specific individual who is struggling now
when i finished watching it i was so shocked it was only 12 min .. it felt like long trip to many places . time was gone . that kind of traumas we experience in our lifes are really gifts , first we don't realize it and we feel so bad until we take the power back . From darkness to the light one can`t exist without another . 2 accidents that i experienced showed me power of life many around me don't understand , they call me crazy then - but i get it , i was there and now I'm here .. i elevated i see life and what's around way differently now . the urge to enjoy the life to feel everything its bigger .. you know how fast it can finish - just like that - BAM! - i felt it twice - double power hahah . Anyway , i wish we all come out from the darkness and enjoy the life - that what its about ...
I’m so glad you out this out there!! Mushrooms pulled me out of the gnarliest depression I’ve ever been in last year and turned me into a new person. Aloha ✌🏼

Excellent film, I wish it was longer. This TBI will be Koa’s greatest teacher. 💜
One of the best videos you put out yet keep up the good work
Your face ID on your phone didn't work when you came back. Classic!

you are such an inspiration, Koa - keep on keeping on.
So amazing - he sought out healing and answers with an open mind, and he received it! Koa Smith is awesome!
All I know is I've seen this guy talk to the water and I was like 🤙🏽. Been a fan ever since.
This was beautiful. Thank you. I have had four concussions in my life. Maybe that’s why I struggle with depression?
Great that you share your journey with us!
