HEARING - Russia's Imperial Identity
ฝัง
- เผยแพร่เมื่อ 9 พ.ย. 2024
- Russia’s war of territorial conquest and genocide in Ukraine is rooted in years of unrestrained authoritarianism and imperialism. The scale of Russia's physical brutality and the rhetoric perpetuating it brings the imperial nature of both contemporary and historical Russia into stark relief. Unlike European colonial empires which were forced to relinquish territory and atone for the sins of empire in the twentieth century, Russia has yet to experience a similar reckoning.
Because Russia did not interpret the collapse of the Soviet Union as an end to its centuries-long imperial project and was not held accountable for its crimes, the cruel legacy of Moscow’s cultural and political domination of ethnic minorities within and beyond Russia’s borders continues to haunt the region. Until Russia’s government and society confront this dark past, Russia will continue to make war on its neighbors, repress minorities within its borders, and extend its adventurism even further abroad.
This hearing will examine the history of Russian colonialism and its current manifestations, especially how language and myths of empire continue to enable Russian atrocities today. Witnesses will further discuss how best to support and elevate marginalized voices seeking political and cultural representation and decolonization.
The following witnesses are scheduled to testify:
1. Dr. Botakoz Kassymbekova, Assistant Professor in Modern History, University of Basel
2. Philip Obaji Jr., Correspondent, The Daily Beast
3. Timothy Snyder, Richard C. Levin Professor of History, Yale University
4. Dr. Maria Vyushkova, Buryat activist and scientist
I too would like to hear all of Timothy Snyder's remarks.
I have now listened through all 4 opening statements.
I am deeply grateful for the report by each witness.
It is staggering to hear reports of such dire realities.

First; they have to take away their idol-Lenin from red square. That would be a good start. I truly believe it’s some kind of a bad spirit in there…
Why would we Russians somehow disturb Lenin's ashes? The historical figure calmed down in the mausoleum near the Kremlin wall. Well, very close by, in the Archangel Cathedral of the Kremlin, lie the Russian sovereigns. Including Ivan the Terrible. Should his ashes also be removed from the tomb? You're funny. Throw Henry VIII out of the coffin, since you are fighting with the remains of tyrants. Destroy what's left of Napoleon. Let me remind you that this gentleman was responsible for the deaths of millions of people at the beginning of the XVIII century.Fighting history is a useless thing. And listening to this kringe from Helsinki is funny and sad. It's funny because the speakers are obviously talking nonsense. And it's sad that their faces are serious.

Thank you very much for the hearing and for such esteemed witnesses with their brilliant testimonies.
But wtf has happened with the sound right when Prof. Snyder started talking?
'Decolonization of Moscow🇷🇺 empire is the only way to end its imperialism', And I don’t mean Putin´s imperialism, but Moscow imperialism in general , from Solzhenitsyn and Brodsky to Navalny and Dugin.
Yes I am sick to read every time in Western media that it’s just „Putin‘s war“
Rus' ought not to be confused with modern “Russia”, which derives its name from the Rus' but historically is a completely different state, which almost all its existence was at war with the Rus'.
Just like the Holy Roman Empire was actually Germany, “Russia” is actually Muscovy, despite their best attempts to convince everybody otherwise.
Its name “Russia" received only in the 18th century, when Peter I simply changed Muscovy’s name into the “All Russian Empire” (Russia originates from Rosia, name used by the Greek Orthodox Clergy in regards to Rus')
Under the reign of Cathrine II Muscovites where even punished for continuing to identify as Muscovites, and were forced to call themselves Russian.
Lands that Russia (Muscovy) claims were part of the original Rus', but actually weren't, are Novgorod, Suzdal, and Ryazan, since in historical texts of XI-XII centuries they are mentioned as separate entities from Rus'. They can be considered parts of extended Rus', although their culture was distinct from main Rus'.
In 1493, Muscovite duke Ivan III appointed himself to be the Great Ruler of All Rus'. No other kings acknowledged that. From that point on Muscovy started to make false claims on Rus' ownership.
“Russia” is an offshoot of Ukraine and not the other way round, despite what Soviet and Russian (Muscovite) historians have been trying to say for years. A Slavicised Finnic, then later, Mongolized offshoot. Kyiv was a developed cultured capital when Moscow was just another swamp village.
Moreover, in the Italian sources of the 15th century it is likewise mentioned, that Russia is bordered by Poland to the west, Lithuania and Livonia to the north, and *Muscovy* to the east, further proving that Russia historically speaking, is an exonym of Ukraine, that was stolen by Muscovy.
Germany used to call itself the Holy Roman Empire, that didn’t mean they became the Romans, and all of a sudden had a right to claim whole of Italy and its history, but yet, that’s exactly what Russia (Muscovy) did in regards to Rus'-Ukraine, which is a horrible injustice!
@@vredacted3125funny that you try to find justice in historic process. There is no justice in history and so there is no need to struggle with the question whether Russia has right to call itself Russia and the heir of Rus’. Moscow’s (or St. Petersburg’s) state and cultural project just turned out to be historically more successful than projects of its neighbors. Therefore it has all rights to call itself an heir of all Rus’. Just the right of the winner.
Besides, I’ve never heard that this question had any meaning for Russian identity. The Soviet transformation of Russian (and of all others Soviet nations) perception of history was too dramatic. Soviets felt that history started with October revolution, everything before was meant to be just a history of oppression and only after 1917 the hope came to this world. This worldview was never completely adopted, but it had significant influence. Regular Russian think of Soviet history as about crucial part of Russian history, the times before are vague. So it doesn’t really matter who was right in XIII century.
@@bachelor3846You are wrong. I am not Ukrainian, but Russia stole the Ukraine's history and bullied those from whom it stole. And you called it success? SOMETHING IS WRONG WITH YOUR MORAL COMPASS.

And false
@@asdilia693 What makes you so think that it is false? Do you have observations you want to share?
@@free2dialogue The argument is misleading because it falsely suggests that Russia is the only major power seeking to expand its geopolitical influence. Major cities like London, Madrid, Rome, Berlin, Istanbul, and Paris continue to wield power through their satellite states. The EU acts as a softer version of the old Entente or Germany's Lebensraum concept, driven by the same goal: exploiting less developed regions for resources.
The U.S. follows a similar pattern. The invasions of Iraq and Afghanistan lacked genuine justification, and the intervention in Serbia was more about controlling the Balkans and pushing out Russian influence than preventing genocide. The same strategy applies to Syria and Ukraine-modern imperialism disguised as geopolitics, aimed at expanding Western institutions and military presence near Russia's borders.
Russia's actions may appear more brutal due to historical influences, but this comparison is debatable. France was responsible for 1.5 million deaths in Algeria, while the U.S. caused 1.2 million deaths in Iraq and 2 million in Vietnam.
Dr. Snyder's microphone should have been immediately fixed, and he should have been able to restart his speech because he is a profoundly wise, well-informed, and articulate speaker.
He is a nazi...
@@P00009 Snyder has become a celebrity because he is willing to give the pseudohistorical support of the entirely erroneous US foreign policy vis a vis Ukraine/Russia. He is a crackpot and a political opportunist.
yeah? Then tell us who and post the links to the articles of this esteemed historians. I wait.
I am afraid he did it himself when trying to move the microphone in the beginning. Sometimes they have to trust the professional people that set the pa.
@@micumatrix I already responded in another similar comment by showing Snyder's manipulation of the historian argument in favor of Western ideology.
See copy below:
A proper historian seeks balanced opinions through careful comparison of different perspectives. However, Snyder's approach appears to align with a political agenda, providing one-sided support of Western ideology and fundamentally criticizing any opposition. He promotes the idea of Western exceptionalism, suggesting that history should be interpreted to bolster this narrative. This often results in downplaying Western crimes while exaggerating those of others.
For instance, in the context of World War II, Snyder portrays the United States as the primary force behind the victory, reducing the Soviet Union's contribution to merely providing "cannon fodder." However, modern analyses indicate that Lend-Lease aid accounted for only about 10% of Soviet weaponry. Snyder also emphasizes the Molotov-Ribbentrop Pact as a critical factor in the war's outbreak, arguing that it was pivotal because it changed Poland's borders. Yet, this overlooks the 1938 Munich Agreement, where the UK ceded the Sudetenland to Germany, and Poland’s own annexation of Czechoslovak territory, Zaolzie. Common sense suggests that it wasn't border changes alone that sparked the war, but rather the military capabilities of Nazi Germany, which were largely built with Anglo-American capital.
Furthermore, Snyder avoids discussing how the U.S. delayed the opening of the Western Front until the war was nearly over. This delay likely cost an additional 5 to 10 million lives, and some argue that, had the front opened earlier, the Holocaust might have been averted.
Those are the examples of my feelings what I see when listen to Snyder's lectures.
I have to disagree with Dr. Maria Vyushkova. Disproportionally large mobilization of people of ethnic minorities, in my opinion, is ethnic cleansing, because it helps to reduce the share of ethnic minorities in the regions of Russia, which is a continuation of the policy of total Russification. In 2017, the Russian Federation abolished compulsory education in the languages of non-Russian peoples. On August 1, 2024, Russia withdrew from The Framework Convention for the Protection of National Minorities (FCNM), which it signed in 1996. Linguocide, the policy of assimilation and cultural appropriation, and now the physical elimination of ethnic minorities are aimed at creating a single imperial population within the Russian Federation.
but it might not be intentional. it could just be that rural people are more willing to accept the bonuses, and they just so happen to be ethnic minorities.
Bravo 👏👏👏
The claim about targeted mobilization of ethnic minorities in Russia has been scrutinized. A BBC analysis revealed that there is no evidence of widespread, intentional mobilization of ethnic minorities in Russia. Additionally, Dr. Maria Vyushkova is not recognized as a specialist in ethnic minorities nor does she possess concrete data on mobilization, making claims to the contrary seem more like unfounded speculation.
Before critiquing Russia's handling of ethnic minorities, it might be more constructive for the United States to address the historical and current status of its indigenous populations, such as the Navajo, Cherokee, and Apache. Similarly, Ukrainian nationalists, who have reportedly been harassing ethnic minorities like Rusyns, Serbs, Urums, Greeks, Bulgarians, and Hungarians for their reluctance to join the conflict against Russia, should be held to the same standards regarding minority rights and treatment.
@@P00009 whataboutism.
Thank you for standing with Ukraine!
Mr Snyder is man that can articulate the experience and a general sentiment of tens of millions of people living in post soviet states. He is the voice of reason who cuts through the Russian propaganda efforts with precision and as a Polish person, I appreciate that immensely.
He only articulates the sentiment of people in post Soviet states for those people who happen to be nazis.
As a Polish person, you should be held accountable for Poland's support of the Iraq occupation, which led to the deaths of 1.2 million people. All crimes of the Soviet Union in Poland and the Baltics do not compare to that scale. Furthermore, as a Polish citizen, you should reflect on why Poland backed Jidahists in Kosovo against ethnic brothers - Serbs, why Poland supports the Israeli genocide of Palestinians or why Poland close eyes on the Banderism in Ukraine. The simple reason for these actions is that Poland is not a truly free and sovereign democratic nation but rather operates as a puppet state.
@@P00009 I think it is a great point to ponder, even though, I am not sure that the people who make those decisions are Polish.

" Saddam Putsein the Great Loser" is rapidly sending Muscovy back to 15c borders .
But how will "Putin send Muscovy to the borders of the XV century" when Russia has 1,500 strategic nuclear warheads? And an unknown number of tactical nuclear weapons? Who will take the risk? Are you? President Biden? Scholz? Or will Zelensky do it? But for now, Zelensky is saddened by the ongoing destruction of Ukraine. And President Putin sits in the Kremlin and laughingly sends "reparations" to Ukraine in the form of missiles and bombs.
The Western world claimed to "save" Iraq from Saddam Hussein, yet this intervention led to the deaths of over a million people-a freedom of graveyard that the Iraqi people never asked for.

Shame on you!
An yes, this is a classic EXEMPLE of RUSSIAN MENTALITY - this is someone else fault, but NOT US! We just a victim of some tsar regimen. What a shame.
Buryats, Kazakhs and all other regions and districts that include Russia lived to themselves and did not say anything until 2024, and some even proudly called themselves Russians. but when the hell went down the pipes, everyone immediately shouted No, we are not Them, we are the victims.

you sound like a FSB provocator.
There were plenty of people there, but no one bothered to go to Bucha. However, many of the victims fled to western Ukraine or the European Union once they were liberated. They were in literal shock and wanted to run away as far as possible. Many people are still in shock., they don’t want to talk, they don’t want to do anything-they are apathetic and just want to hide from society.
The Buryats, Kazakhs, and other regions and districts have long been silenced, but the FSB (or KGB, depending on the time period) took care of them. Take, for example, Fail Fattakhovich Alsynov. Everyone remembers Russia's misconducts; silencing people doesn’t mean they are forgoten.
Here are just a few examples of Russian's miscoundacts in the past:
The genocide of the Circassians.
The genocide of the Chechens.
The genocide of the Volga Germans.
The genocide of the indigenous peoples of Siberia.
The deportations and ethnic cleansing on a massive scale-that’s how Russians became the majority in Crimea.
Soviet repressions of Polish citizens (1939-1946).
Massacres across different time periods, such as the Awa’uq Massacre, Samashki Massacre, Laghman Massacre, Rainiai Massacre, and many others.
It is difficult to understand this minor nation involment and how much of the brutality comes from russians comanders how much is fomr them particaluraly.
@@aspiretoinspire77 Sure, the video calls "Hearing the russian imperial identity" men's that on this meeting speak about it minority districts and silent dissidents. But the thing that bother me on almost all ex russians, russians dissidents and opposition, that in any public platform that thay may have (specially foreigner like this, that orientated on the west market society), they may try to downplay or whitewash their criminal and inhumane actions as aggressor nations and countries. They use different tactics for this: They shift the focus from the victims of their criminal actions to themselves, where they seize the initiative and try to make them sympathize with the fact that they have such a regime that "forces" them to commit crimes against humanity.
They accuse the victim of their crimes (as this doctor accuses the world press, including the Ukrainian press, which recorded the crimes of the Buryats in Buch, calling them "myths").
They use the Russian imperial culture to prove their humanism to the world, without mentioning the destroyed and appropriated culture and history of the countries they enslaved. And yes, all this is done with the exact calculation of the Western audience. which really does not want to know the truth, that this public wants the war to end and to be returned to the familiar picture of Russia as such a distant, incomprehensible but deep culture, which is actually purely cannibalistic and backward.
Therefore, the only way for me to get to know Russia and its colonizing essence is to talk less about this conglomerate of borrowed and bloodied history, and start listening and studying the countries absorbed and affected by its cannibalism, such as Ukraine, Georgia, Chechnya, Latvia, etc.

The European Union possesses significant anticorruption regulations required for entry and operation.
Many of these or similar regulations, as on oligarchic interference and judicial corruption, are and should be useful to other nations, including USA, and African nations, to develop more representative and democratic self- governance.
Unfortunately, regulations are worth nothing without people actually enforcing them. If you want to change the social system in a country, imposing regulations alone won't work. First you have to change the people. Once you've done that, the people themselves will set up proper regulations.

Ukraine loves also all the M113 and Humvees or MRAPs. It’s always better than normal cars. Being the red passport holder, I find it great to know that the discussion has finally arisen. What I see as a very noteworthy detail is that of 140 mln people recorded in Russia, only 20 mln of those are men of age between 20-40 years. Please consider that fact when discussing the possible effects of the Russian state's probable deterioration. In contrast with decolonised Africa, there's not enough military power in Russia to get into national/ethnical wars. So it's likely that the process of decolonisation may be considerably peaceful, especially if carefully curated.

I have some more information on Russian and Tatar history, th-cam.com/video/iWBhT3yP_uE/w-d-xo.htmlfeature=shared. The Russians and the Tatar have an active blood fued.
It started with Tatars initially had the upper hand against Russia as they had access to Cavarly Archers armed with Composite Bows (remember the Mongolian Empire). After Russia started trading with Europe, Russia gained the upper hanf with Gunpowder technology. Russia expanded its Empire by invading Kazan and the rest of Tatar territory (this includes Crimea and Easter Eurasia).
The Russian and Tatars in the Federation do not trust each other (even today). Incorporating Russians and Tatars into our nations will create more division in Canada and America. Tatars are responsible for some terror attack in Russia. While Russia continues to commit many genocide against the Tatar. This is not our fight! Please do not intervene!
Taters and Cheshens! Sounds like a nice breakfast.

Why are you so biased against Russia? Still can't forgive the Soviet Union for scaring you?
Because they refuse to change and abide to internationnal laws. It has been 500 years of imperialism and even today they still can't stop themselves from occupying illegally three countries. This needs to stop

Are you losing your mind people? What imperial? Today's Russia is leftovers of the Soviet Union and population there is still Soviet by their upbringing. The minds of those who is in charge are Soviet also, they want everything would be like in Western countries, not politics though. You put to much imagined interpretation here. Wrong!!!
You either didn't listen to what was spoken or didn't understand it. The soviets were just a thin veneer on top of Russian imperialism. Nothing changed, in essence, when the soviets took power. Russia stayed the same brutal, medieval empire that it was since its inception, and consistently continued the imperial policy of forceful expansion over neighboring nations followed by forceful assimilation and extermination of the local population.

I'd love to read the source for the claims at 26:00 All the previous research I've read on disproportional numbers of indigenous people in Russian army concluded that there's no strong correlation between ethnicity and a chance to get drafted, but there's a definite connection between region's wealth and proportion of population serving in the army. You also must keep in mind that for example in Buryatia also live ethnic Russians, and chances to get drafted/voluntarily join the army for ethnic Buryats and ethnic Russians living in the same place are the same.
I'm honestly really tired of this propaganda trope. Funny how the speaker mentions "the eastern savages" Ukrainian propaganda trope, but the trope of "russians target ethnic minorities for war" has the same origin.
You don't need to target exclusively ethnic minorities from these regions to eradicate them from their native land. The ruzzian government just needs to send higher quotas to these regions. number of minorities is slim but the number of ruzzians is not. There is a saying in ruzzian. Лес рубят - щепки летят. Or "when you cut down the forest, wooden chips scatter around". These "scattered chips" are drafted ruzzians from these regions
It is funny that the speakers do not mention the first and second army corps of the Russian army, staffed by natives of Ukraine itself. People have been voluntarily fighting against the Kiev regime since 2014. This is of course an inconvenient fact. And they are clearly not working for the benefit of Ukraine. And anyway, listening to this collection of outspoken freaks, it's hard to take this seriously at all.😂
@@ИннокентьевАлексей so show me the evidence of higher than average quotas then. Again, I'd like to see the research, however poor it could be, supporting the claims.
