Nice video, superb loco. 'Russell' is the flagship of the 'faithful' (the original WHR revivalists), and they deserve praise for their tenacity and strength of character as an organisation!
My uncle practically rebuilt " RUSSELL " In the early 80s .....in very proud of him I have a picture of him stood on the side tanks of " RUSSELL" 1st steam test
Hi Richard, I have heard that the WHHR would like to keep it on their line this year, however I think that running Russell to Caernarfon with heritage stock must be a dream of many a narrow gauge enthusiast. Let's hope that the two railways can work side-by-side to make the whole WHR experience diverse, integrated and harmonious. Cheers; Dave
Cutting Edge Video I hope Russell does run on the WHR in future, but it will have to be driven by the WHHR drivers as a driver I spoke to said that 'he WHR treats their locos like toys'. In other words, they want to keep Russell in good nick and after seeing this video, I can understand why!
Where did they put the coal in such tank engines with tiny cabs? Were the rear of the water tanks coal bunkers? How did the fireman swing his shovel? Enjoying the videos by the way, including the Garratts. Here's a 1950 promotional film from my old stamping ground - made when I was a very little-un. Main line Garratts were a familiar sight to me on the Queensland central line. Beyer Garratt Locomotives Round The World - Queensland.
It is not a big shovel on these tiny engines. Plus on this front load type it is not necessary to swing all it is is back and forth. On back bunkers it is the same but with a some what bigger engine. You don't need to keep shoveling on engines. 2 scoops of coal from a regular shovel on this little engine would last a week.
Nope! Not bigger. Has a new front buffer beam to the original (1906) profile, a few other original details restored, but basically the same. Cheers, Dave
went behind Russell many years ago before the Festiniog relaid the WHLR. Wonderful to see it going again.

Thanks John - and thanks for the wave in the closing scene!
Beautiful! I hope she'll be running when I visit in two or three weeks.

+Matt`s Mocs ;=) A week? An hour maybe - or less.
+Codenwarra Cove well it is exaggeration more like 4 runs up and back from a hill.
I wonder if Russel ever ventured onto WHR/FR metals
It was originally a WHR engine so would have done so. Wouldn't have fitted on the FR because of the smaller FR loading gauge
She's a lot bigger than the 1980s Russell? Why?
Nope! Not bigger. Has a new front buffer beam to the original (1906) profile, a few other original details restored, but basically the same. Cheers, Dave
what happened to her chime whistle, I’m glad it’s gone,
The WHHR's carriage set has always seemed a bit more ragtag than the uniform FR and WHR sets. Just opinion.
NiA!
No that’s Freddie.
