If John doesnt win the title after the huge season he has had, l wonder what does that feel like for the other surfer who does. Does that surfer then become a somewhat subpar champion?? to me it almost makes the trophy seem not as important or as big as it once was. To me John is and should be the champion this year.
Mostly in waves of consequence John has built his points ... and if the final conditions were similar, one can argue he'd do well enough to win (points or outright) champ for sure. Lesser conditions, he'd benefit from his well earned lead into the last comp. Points overall is better because of the variable conditions, this isn't football in a stadium. You have to earn the championship over the length of the season.
Let's be honest, it's why we lost Carissa after two heart breaks of having a substantial lead and someone else coming in at the end. The "WSL Final" should be contest #11. It's sad to see someone surf consistently better than any other surfer throughout the year, then have one off day and you're second best. Instead of making it exciting for the audience, be fair to the surfers, and the people can and will appreciate a surfer who earned it though out the year.
@@still_skeptical Yes, but lost the following two after coming out of the regular season with a solid lead. Not taking anything away from the other surfers, all of whom I admire, and I know it is sport after all, but dominating for three years consistently yet falling short and having less to show for it? Just my two cents.
This can be argued either way. Some could say that a surfer needs to win in a playoff situation and experience the pressure of winning in the ocean on Finals day. Other would say, wait, we just surfed 9 events in a variety of conditions how can that not forge a champion? I've come to agree with the latter. I think we will lose more surfers (i.e. John John) due to this new format. It just doesn't feel right to me. Having said that I like the Finals, but it should be some sort of invitational which is basically what I said in the video. I hope the WSL reconsiders their stance on this.
Its interesting because before you could’ve been champion without winning anything just based on points. Finals corrected that, now you have at least to win Trestles to be champion. But it created a bigger problem because now if you win all events but loses Trestles your 2nd place. If they continue with this horrible format I think they should just gave finals day winner a huge amount of points like 30k , making it possible to win both ways and rewarding if someone has the year of their life’s with multiple wins.
This is interesting. We forget that under the old system a surfer could win the world title without winning an event. I want to read this on the next Currents surf show (this Wednesday Sept. 4th 7:30pm) for discussion. Thanks for your comment.
... As i dont follow the wsl religiously or that consistantly I had always just assumed the format change was a result of the covid times but obviously thats not how it is / was . Its proper silly straight up to follow this format ... A competitor can be way ahead on points for the whole of their years work on tour , and to not win outright makes no sense at all ? 🙏🌊
The only people that don’t want that format is the two people that finish top in the men’s and women’s everyone else loves it Because They have the chance to win a world title without being the best Surfer all year how wrong Can’t go back to the old way because Cris more was ripped off twice she will demand her titles back

Couldn’t agree more. WSL is such a joke now.

@@OldSurfDaddid it ever happen? That someone became WC without winning a single event?
