    You get a crit in minecraft when you are falling down. Being higher or lower doesnt affect it and there's no chances. If you're falling and you hit your opponent you do a crit 100% of the time, unless it's in the newest version and you're sprinting.

    Pvp analysis
    1.8: 1.8 is all about knockback since knockback is a big part of being able to combo. A combo in minecraft is a series of hits on the opponent where you are in a position where you can get consecutive hits on your oponent without them hitting you, this can be achived by clicked fairly fast and moving at a perfect rate. Blockhitting is another factor as well, since you play on bedrock edition it does not exist however block hitting is ability to hit the oponent and quickly block your sword reducing damage by half a heart. However, the timing is very hard and most of the time makes no difference, blocking your sword is mainly used to reduce damage from ranged attacks(bows). Fishing rods relate back to knockback, since fishing rods are a ranged weapon that deals knockback without any recharge it is a major factor for being able to pull of a combo or get some extra space between your opponent.(For this version it is useful to have your back against a wall because your opponent cant combo you, leaving you with a good oppurtunity to combo back).
    1.9+: (I play on bedrock edition so please correct me if I miss anything or say something that is wrong) Unlike 1.8, 1.9 is purely based on timing and skill(not just how fast you can click)because of the new cooldown feature for every weapon. With axes being able to disable shields for a moment and doing more damage than a sword, there is no point in using a sword when your opponent has a shield. The knowledge of knowing how much time the sheild is disabled and knowing when your shield is disabled. Also realizing when to go for axe crits is really what Dream has mastered more than any other individual(Even in this dual against Technoblade he was able to win with a significant amount of hearts left) Crossbows are like the fishing rods in 1.9, however mostly used to get extra space off your opponent while also dealing damage. Once again, hard to master when or when to know not to use it, however Dream mastered it. Basically every single hit counts, as you can see in the duals for 1.9 Tecnoblade empahises missing hits. Also for 1.9 healing is so much faster, luckily there is no food for this fight, but still a bit of saturation making it pretty difficult for someone like Technoblade who is so use to 1.8 healing making it harder to predict what hp Dream has. Same goes vise versa with Dream.
    I hope this is useful for anyone out there who is not clear with some of the PvP mechanics. Anyone who wants to add/correct something please feel free to leave a comment!

    • @KoruGo
      @KoruGo 4 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Eh, in 1.8 it still doesn't really matter how fast you click. As long as you're getting around 6cps (which is pretty low) there isn't a difference between that and clicking faster. (though there is a difference from 6cps to 12cps, its an incredibly miniscule difference)

      Not really sure about the "having you back to a wall strat". People can combo you and you can stick to the wall, no way to go back and escape the combo, so if they have you in a good combo you can't get down easily. In a corner it's even worse since you also can't strafe so I would advise to have lot of space for movement.

    • @pineconesacramento8802
      @pineconesacramento8802 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@HydroMaple To get off a combo you need to be moving at such a rate while hitting your opponent to a point that they wont hit you. If you combo them against the wall, it would be too hard(nearly impossible) for you to keep them without hitting you. Once they do hit you the tables are even and you would have escaped there combo. However Techno or Dream didn't do this because rods are in play, if you use a rod correctly and accuratly then its very hard to escape.

    ok so i'm a really good pvper in 1.8 so i'm gonna explain some stuff:
    criting is really good because it deals 1.5 the amount of damage (and you crit only while falling down)
    when you jump you get more knockback when you get hit
    getting knocked back is really bad because it starts a combo which is a series of hits which really hard to avoid
    good pvpers can counter crits by roding the other player when they jump and because of that they get a lot of knockback and the other player can start a combo
    there is a lot more to 1.8 pvp but this is the most important things in this video
    hope you read this huge article and learn a bit about 1.8 pvp

      nope jumping doesnt make more knockback sprinting does also it seems youu know some things but not why so let me correct a few 1.8 is momentum based meaning when you get knockbacked your momentum is backwards and you cant reach your opponent as well as the obvious disadvantage of being higher which in turn is what causes you to get combo''d

    Crits matter dude that 150% (or +50%) damage adds up really fast and when u r lower than ur enemy when u jump the pythagorean theorem also apply. But getting a crit is worth jumping for a temporary opening.
    Edit: momentum is everything in 1.8.9 hence the fishing fod to mess up the enemy's momentum even if it does no dmg, and the double hit can lead to a full combo because the double hit knocks the enemy back messing up their momentum while you gain momentum, block hitting is also a thing and that extra bit of dmg reduction is pretty good even if it slows u down.

    With regard to your question about why they are jumping: They are not actually jumping in those exchanges, its just knockback hitting them up vertically. Normally, the vertical displacement is negligible, but after being hit repeatedly in a small time frame, the player can go high enough that it looks like they are jumping. This is also what makes w-tapping so powerful in 1.8.

    14:05 The reason why Techno let Dream leave the high ground is because it isn't as useful in 1.16 to have the low ground. Since you have to wait for your weapon to charge up instead of constantly spamming right click. Also, because Dream is a block up, I would say it would be harder to land an axe crit for Techno, but I'm not sure about that.

    During 1.8, since it’s a flurry of clicks and swing. Movement is key, you always need to keep changing your movement which is why strafe patterns or super important. Jumping is sort of a mix up, it changes up your movement and is less predictable.

    Height is more important in 1.8 (Techno's preferred version) because the knock back is higher and the spamming ability allows for disgusting combos after the first hit lands. Basically you hit them further up and, therefore, gain an even bigger advantage. On the other had in 1.9 you can block in mid air and cancel the combo.

    If you jump, you get more knockback, which makes it easier to be comboed. And the triangle thing is much more important in 1.8 than in newer versions. Now about the bow/fishing rods, they`re used for knockbacks, making the combo easier. But remember that all of this is 1.8 stuff is much more relevant when you're at least above 10 clicks per second, like these guys

    Usually the tactic for 1.8 (Sword version) is to use lag to your advantage, meaning that you can hit your enemy before they can hit you since you're closer on your screen than on theirs. This is why it favours the aggressor and why high ground is so important because the quick attack speed allows juggles. The fishing-rod after securing a sprint hit is important as it stops the enemies sprint, meaning you can use that lag to secure a free second hit while they're in the air or recovering.
    The tactic for 1.16 (Axe Version) favours the defender, getting free blows through blocking with a shield. Without the fishing rod to stop regen, plus with regen being accelerated in 1.16, you need to rely on crossbows/bows to stop the enemies regen. Sometimes in the earlier battles (I believe battle no.2) you see dream hit techno with smaller hits so that techno swings while being knocked back, thus further than he anticipated and ultimately missing entirely. Usually its decided by trading axe crits or blocking the opponent while they're in the air so you can return an axe crit.
    Personally I see 1.8 as having the higher outplay potential with mechanical skill and use of the fishing rod, but alot of people see it as left-click fiesta

    The jump itself on equal level as the opponent will not matter since a block higher won't do a difference on hitting the opponent because of the hitboxes but if your in the block instead you won't be able to jump
    But jump itself is how you do crits because jumping while in a block more high will make the opponents hitbox too far
    Also bring in high ground can be an advantage too especially on steep or mountains which can do shorter crits and fall damage but the short crits is not a major advantage itself.
    Edit: I know I'm late but a cool fact only learned recently is techno didn't know that sprinting while jumping doesn't do crits after the duel.
    Yet he still won despise that major disadvantage

    the famous saying "take the high ground" doesn't really work in sword fighting for techno's reason exactly.
    it's said about battle strategy, not tactics - it's easier to decend than ascend - therefore in a strategic setting it's true (also all kinds of ranged weapons benefit from it too, because gravity).

    • @HydroMaple
      @HydroMaple 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      So are you saying you are supposed to have the high ground or not? Because in Minecraft, speaking from experience, you can fuck people up pretty bad if you have the lower ground. Also I don't get your point of gravity benefiting ranged weapons. It's true that damage of arrows is calculated with speed, but arrows don't gain any significant speed while going down after shooting them.

  • @vastlydiligently1747
    @vastlydiligently1747 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    @YoBGS 14:05 You can’t juggle someone because there is a cool down from when you hit someone/when you hit nothing. So both Techno and Dream would want to get Crits rather than 1 getting a Crit, and the other not get a Crit (They can both hit again at the same time, so it is useless to not go for crits)
    The only useful advantage with being a block lower is hitting the opposite earlier, but if you both are close enough to each other, it doesn’t make much of a difference.

  • @dabo_box7860
    @dabo_box7860 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    In Minecraft, you actually jump over 1 block high. So, jumping in 1.8 combat is a very bad idea. Not only because of the Pythagorean Theorem (triangles), but also in 1.8 combat you are practically banking on the fact that you can combo your opponent (hitting them multiple times in a row). Jumping in this combat makes you take more knockback and makes you easier to combo. A critical hit is better than a normal hit, but it's not worth the 2 - 3 hit combo that will result in your jump. Now in 1.16, it is worth it to critical hit because you can't spam click and continuously deal the same damage, you have to wait for a cooldown. So, combos don't happen, meaning that knockback isn't as big of a worry. The only reason knockback would be troublesome in 1.16 combat is near a cliff, which aren't in these duels.

    13:52 The reason why Techno can't hold the low position is that the advantage it gives is based on hitting from a distance; it gives him a free hit because he can step back - out of Dream's range - while still being able to hit him, however stepping back also gives Dream the opportunity to escape the high ground after that hit, so it can't be chained with only a single step of height difference.
    Also, swords aren't _purely_ ornamental in 1.16 generally, but they may as well be in shield PvP.

  • @rydergolde3169
    @rydergolde3169 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    to sum up your confusions about PVP:
    >height has no effect on crits, you only get them while falling
    >jumping to crit doesn't really have too much of an effect on the Right Triangle issue, because you're pretty much in their face already to land the crit, *but* the default jump height *is* roughly one block, but you're not up for long enough for it to matter anyways
    -honestly I can't 100% comment on Dream being a "counter-puncher" or anything, but 1.9 PVP definitely punishes running in and swinging all around, *especially* with Axes, so while it *is* better to go for "counter-punches", it's just because it's easier with how 1.9 combat is
    -you can't really "play defense" to keep the lowground like that, a sprint jump has more forward momentum than a normal hit's knockback, *on top of that*, I SEVERELY doubt that a Diamond Axe's hit cooldown would have been short enough to juggle effectively
    -1.9 and 1.8 PVP are pretty different, but the main similarity has to be: if you can be more fluid with your attack/defense styles, you'll be better off, because there are different ways to be aggressive or defensive (though not *that* many, it's enough to make a difference)
    feel free to correct me on anything here
    but don't act like a know-it-all prick about it

  • @assassin_5656
    @assassin_5656 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    With the lower thing, it's more of distancing. If your enemy can't hit you because you have like a quarter block more reach than them it doesn't even matter about the crits as much since they can't get near you.

    A lot of other people have said this but just want to put my own wording out there. You seemed to have some confusion on crits in general, and confused the strategies between the two versions a bit.
    - Crits happen 100% of the time if you land an attack while falling
    - crits don’t work while sprinting in 1.9+, techno did not know this, you can see a few times where he sprinted in and didn’t land a crit
    - blocking with the sword is only a thing in 1.8
    - in 1.8, crits are not as important as getting more hits in. Being higher than your opponent is bad because triangles and increased knockback, which keeps you at an angle where you can’t hit your opponent and they can hit you for longer.
    - the height advantage/disadvantage is primarily thing in 1.8, since 1.9+ focuses on big hits and shielding, rather than range. Most of the fight is going to happen well within attacking range of the other person. It still matters in 1.9 to the extent where it can determine who gets the first hit, but once the close range combat starts it doesn’t make much of a difference.
    - “Juggling” the opponent and keeping them at range is a goal in 1.8, but not 1.9+. It just isn’t going to happen with an axe because it’s so slow. In 1.8 you can constantly swing, so it’s much more viable. If you do double hits like that in 1.9+ you do no damage and are giving your opponent free hits.

    See, I don’t think you understand how much the version changes the pvp. Dream’s version is 1.16. And techno’s is 1.8. But what you don’t understand is that they’re both Gods at their own versions, but Dream has been playing since the start so he still knows how to play 1.8, whereas techno has stayed in 1.8 for so long, and he almost has to start from ground zero, and Dream is already ahead of 90% of people in the version, and ahead of 60% of people in 1.8. So it’s fair to say that it’s a pretty big upset if Techno takes a game off of Dream in 1.16. But he takes 2 games, making it a HUGE upset. This is what allowed him to push past Dream in the duel. In fact, many people even said that Dream is a level above everyone else in 1.16 pvp, and that he also could hold his own in 1.8, and so many people thought techno would lose.

However once you block a crit your shield gets disabled making you vulnerable. In raw PVP battles it is definitely better to be as low as possible but in Minecraft in general and in different types of PVP games having a higher height advantage can be a huge thing for sure. You mostly see this in games where you can build like say Bedwars and Skywars because being higher than your opponent means that they have to build up to you where you can easily just knock them down and if they decide to stay on the ground that means you can have the jump on them at any point.
