Great video, man. I love towns like this that are far away from other places, and I especially love borders and border towns of all kinds! Thank you for uploading this!
Hello Mr Bald, Your videos are a daily dose of refreshment. In fact, they remind me of the first engagements British traders, merchants and mercenaries had with Indian's way back in the 1600's. Through warm interactions with the locals, they became part Indians themselves, as Jonathan Harris so beautifully depicts in his fantastic book 'The First Firangis'. Cheers and keep up the Fantastic work..
Great vlog Bald, I have been to Moreh during my high school years, but learning a lot more about the city through your vlogs. NE India has more to offer for travelers, more to explore as well, I am glad are visiting these places.
At 03:09 the 2 workers doing the carvings are Myanmar. All border check points into and out of Myanmar are controlled by the Myanmar army. They'll only allow Teak wood smuggled out of Myanmar by demanding huge kick backs. Similarly at China/ Myanmar border. The Teak forests in Myanmar are depleting at an alarming rate. Similarly, the Sandal wood forests were decimated, you cannot find anymore.
This video feels so genuine....Despite the fact that every place has its own bright and beautiful spectacles you cant say there isn't any bad about it.Yes , India has many underdeveloped places where people live simple and pleasant lives in their own villages without bothering about the world and the fact that their actions are actually bringing bad things .Moreh is also one of them..If you try to study India every layer has another layer of complexities and depths amongst all that is the people most of them oblivious and simply following orders..I'd say the higher authorities most of the times fool the public to portray something wrong as not wrong or they simply allow them (indifferent) for the sake of their own non involvement and appeasements. This video kind of highlights the ignored playgrounds of India..Your vids open up the insides and ignored parts of the world and are really entertaining at the same time..well Love them.waiting for more💖
VICE should appoint you for this region. You as a foreigner to this land have seriously balls of steel hahaha. Even we don't think of going to these places. Bravo Mr Bold!!!
@Uncle Rico Agree, but what I *would* like to see is Mr Bald traveling with ex-Vice journalist Tim Pool. He's a good egg and the combo should be interesting.
Actually, teak is not totally illegal, there is a fixed quantity people can import. The real smuggled goods are gold, precious metals and stones, drugs from Laos Myanmar and Cambodia.
Blaming India or Manipur for deforestation in Burma so that Manipur can have nice beds and doors is same as blaming US for drugs entering its border from Mexico. Perpetrator should be stopped. Demand will itself drop if supply stops coming from Burma.
@Lea Centra I can't believe you believed the hipocrits. US and European companies are giving contracts for deforestation in most SE Asian countries and somehow a minor smuggling becomes the reason for deforestation. Do you have any idea how much area of forest is cut down each day for the contracts and they bribe the forest officers a lot. Where are the so called saviors of the west when their companies are committing such crimes. They just wanna somehow blame others for everything.
It's like giving advice to bachelors to not marry. When you yourself has married and had all the fun. Hey considerate ones.. don't you know that they plant trees? It's like farming. And also they don't take more than what they need. There is no deforestation and this business has been going on hundreds of years from now. So, there is no need for you to worry. Just try to conserve and preserve your own place.

Hello sir, since I belong to north eastern part of India.I guess I am eligible to make this statement. If you had done a little research before the trip, you wouldn't had referred the native there as "maybe Burmese people".There are seven state on the North Eastern part of India known as seven sisters, the people from these states belongs to Mongolian race and look like any of the south east Asian people. As for the crime, all states from NE are ranked amongst the lowest crime rate in India(expect for Assam, which is influx with immigrants from Bangladesh). * While I do appreciate your intention and motive, I felt you portrait the place as something it is not. It is not dangerous as you've mention despite the place being under develop, I am sure, you weren't trouble by anyone there nor anyone approached you with ill intention.?
Lower crime rates doesnot mean lower crime actually. Up is ranked 24th in crime but we all know how safe it is. Kerala is ranked 2nd in crime but it is one of the safest state in India. Similarly all the European countries have a highest crime rate whereas countries like Syria, Iran, African countries have lowest crimes rates. Crimes rates are actually measure of how much crime is reported. Usually more the crimes are "reported" safer the place is. (I am not saying that NE is not safe but just clarifying the theory about crime rate).
@@amritprusty6097 Well I suppose the phrase "crime rate" has a different meaning then? Crime rate is defined as the direct outcome of reported crime incidents per 100,000 total population. Wonder how a government runs a country if they cannot depend on the statistical outcome tested, proven and followed by known governing bodies of the world.
@@yangerrai1605 That's exactly what I am saying BRO. More the place is developed, more will be the crime rate because then the police stations are more accessible, people are more aware of their rights, people will report even less severe crimes. That's is why most of the developed countries have high crime rates whereas India has 10 times lesser crime rate. In India crimes are reported only if it's very severe and sometimes cops are not even willing to write FIR. So yes, crime rates are not a reliable source to determine safety of a country.
@@yangerrai1605 For eg. After the Nirbhaya rape case, the molestation and rape cases quadrupled over the years. Not because crime against women increased, but because more women got the courage to report an FIR for it.
It's just trade that has been going on before Manipur was annexed in India, and in those days it was just trade. So, "smuggling" isn't an appropriate word I guess. And I think the people there won't be happy for sure if you say that it's a smuggling town and the people are smugglers.
Don't say "koi baat nahi" instead ask "koi aitraz?" which means "any objection?" If he agrees he'll say "koi baat nahi" as in "no problem". You got it the other way around hence they are often not sure what to reply.
Koi baat nu as well as koi aitraaz are bad ..koi aitraaz is kind of offensive....instead simply say Kya main yahan dekh loon ? Or Kya main ye dekh loon ?

After 2nd World War those Tamilians want to return to Burma/Myanmar but they were unable to do so because military rule has taken over Myanmar and Tamilians who were Burmese citizens during British rule got stuck there. And the govt. Of Manipur give that land to Tamilians. Back in 70s it was only Tamil. But now it is flooded with people from all around India and Bangladesh

Hello Mr Bald,
Your videos are a daily dose of refreshment. In fact, they remind me of the first engagements British traders, merchants and mercenaries had with Indian's way back in the 1600's. Through warm interactions with the locals, they became part Indians themselves, as Jonathan Harris so beautifully depicts in his fantastic book 'The First Firangis'.

I don't think many professional journalists have even covered any documentary so deep and interactive d way u have done it.

Blaming India or Manipur for deforestation in Burma so that Manipur can have nice beds and doors is same as blaming US for drugs entering its border from Mexico. Perpetrator should be stopped. Demand will itself drop if supply stops coming from Burma.
@Lea Centra why would anyone stop buying teak if they need it????

👍👍👍❤️❤️®️Thounaojam from Delhi ❤️

Illegal trade.
Maybe you're right
Believe me no one cares if you say it's smuggling they can't even make ends meet if not for their relative

Love your work, but i have say you are pushing your luck putting on film the comments about the army controlling smuggling when you already have been warned not to film there. People with strong vested interest and power don't always play nicely. Stay safe!
Nah he's gonna be okay, it ain't a banana republic, they are used to being called smugglers
This guy is definitely an old military or some private security agent. The way he walks around and how he is paying so much attention to the security situation there and doing the right thing all the time. Well done. Respect for that.
Its hard to say he definitely have confidence and experience that shows through, what I could find about is that he went bankrupt with a bookstore in Brighton ( therefore channel name) and he have a long history of traveling before his TH-cam channel became popular. In March 1993, he went on a backpacking trip to India, flying into Delhi’s Indira Gandhi Airport for what was decided to be a one-month backpacking journey, but became so interested in Indian culture that he lived there for four years and opened up a small hotel. So he know the culture and people, but maybe he was in the military when he was very young like 18 years old, he is 49 now so was 19 in 1993
