2 ways to test bridge rectifiers & check standby volts on power board using meter

  • How to test bridge Rectifier & check standby volts on power board using digital meter "dvm", just check multimeter in diode mode to read "bridge rectifiers", diodes, and transistors. also test bridge rectifiers in ac & dc mode on meter. if you have 5v stndby but no stdby led on tv then i would check main logic board, this works for Sony, Samsung, LG, Vizio ect..

I'm an elderly gentleman with time on my hands and decided to learn a bit about electronics, specifically television repair. I have learned SO MUCH from your videos! You are amazing, your knowledge, and the way in which you present your videos. Thank you so much ....always looking forward to your next one.

The video is very helpful! It is not just very good in understanding the bridge rectifier, but understanding the process and flow of operations is important in diagnosing where the problem lies. Case in point is I actually did not know that it was the video controller board that kicked the signal back to the power supply board to release the voltages and current to the other components. I've picked up five flat screen TVs from the curb side and have fixed four of the five. And in large part, thanks are due to this lad by his excellent explanations. Although I hold a BA in computer sciences (but in Windows XP) and years of experience in soldering, that only enabled me to be potentially able to repair the TVs. TampaTec's descriptions and explanations has helped me over the hurdle to effectively diagnose and then repair the TVs on a component level.
    Thanks man!

Congrats on your success. I hope you run into a big 4k tv to fix. Usually it's bad led strips in 4k TVs that go bad after few years. Shopjimmy.com sells repair kits.

Thanks learning alot. Mine is a 50" inch samsung plasma. With the lower half of the screen black. If I put a fan behind the tv usually I don't have a problem. Your diagnostics are helping me narrow it down. Some say it is the T-Con board. But I don't know how to diagnose that yet. I do have a red light.

Tocayo, your videos are great! I have a 55" Toshiba REGZA like the one in your video that died. I was going to throw it out until I saw your video and became a subscriber. I ran all your tests and it turns out I had the same bad fuseable resistor that you did. However, after I changed it I got good standby voltage but then the bridge rectifier was giving funny readings: 120v AC, 116v DC, and .9, .9, and 1.0. I removed the Bridge Rectifier from the board, checked it and got normal readings of .5, .5, and 1.0. I figure something else is causing it to act up when powered on the board. By any chance are you going to do a video on that problem?

The two pins 5vs and ps/on, is that five volts standby and power supply on?

Hello Tampatec, may I assume that you are from Fla.?
I have a 42in Sylvania Lcd that wont come on. My stby switch is on, but when I power up, the green light flashes rapidly 17 times and reverts back to standby mode. At first I would keep tapping the power switch on the tv and it would sometimes come on. Now, after a few weeks of that nonsense, it refuses to come on at all.
All the components look good on the power board. I just finished watching your video above on bridge rectifiers and standby volts and I am going to be checking those out. Do you have any other suggestions that I might try. This is my first attempt at repairing a TV but I am very determined to be successful. You are a great teacher and I shall keep learning from you. Thank you for your desire to be helpful to your green colleagues.

Hi Tampatec, I have a sharp 52 inch LC-52E77UN LCD tv. My tv is dead no lights light up when the power button is pressed. I diagnosed the power supply RCENCA336WJQZ and there is no 5 volt standby. So, I replace the zener diode, and two resistors in the secondary unit (power supply kit for secondary voltage from Shop Jimmy), still no standby volts, no lights on the front panel. I have voltage now at the zener diode but not at the standby voltage connection. Checked ac voltage supply and bridge recitfier all good. Any recommendations you can provide is greatly appreciated before i purchase a new power supply.
    Thanks,
    Quincy

When plugged in, it starts scanning, get to 100% and starts all over again from 0% and on an on. I have thought that an IC on the power board might be the cause. But I am not sure. How could you possibly explain and what could be the solution. Thank you.

Looked at bridge rectifier. Tested as indicated and have 0L with negative probe on neg pin when I switched it pos probe on neg lead still 0L across. If I put in resistance mode I get 9.00 on ac pins and Ol on positive with neg to neg. Flipped I get 1.5 to ac pins and -3.5 to pos pin. But I do have 5.11 on both standby. Nothing on ps on. Which I saw some jump 5v standby and ps on to see if they get the 12 and 24 volts on power board to verify if it's main.. Am I correct? Any assistance would be greatly appreciated.

My standby light is on I can sometimes turn the TV off I just do not have any back light. The standby light turns to blue and it usually is a dim red when working properly. It looks like the main board is bad. By the way I had a Google Chrome on the HDMI I think that may have damaged the main board what do you think? This an LG42LG50. I also measured 24 volts 16.5 and 5 volts on the power board. It stop working for a while we turned it off. After a couple of days it turned on played and then got to this state where the blue light in on under the power button and no display. Usually you hear some kind of relay clicking turn on process. Hi, great videos, I have a problem with my 52" sharp TV, model# (LC-52D64U), I have flashing power and opc lights (2 fast power and opc blinks and 1 slow power blink) but it will not turn on, I do have electronics background but not working in the trade and never worked on these flat screen tv's and without a proper shematic diagram its kind confusing.
I have already replaced the power board (RDENCA235WJQZ) and also the main board but still no luck, on the power board I have 120vac going in and I have 5vdc stby voltage but not getting any other voltages mentioned on the board like 12volts and 60 volts going to the inverter boards even with the power board forced on, the inverter boards are probably ok since I'm not getting any votages going to them, can you please give some pointers on this problem that I'm having?, any help will be greatly appreciated.
    Thank you,

How in the world is it correct that from the negative to the positive of your rectifier is .445 volts while to each of the AC pins it is .556 volts and you say it is a good rectifier. Shouldn't from the negative to positive DC of the rectifier be double like 1.1 volt or so? That is two diodes combined. Confusing as hell.

IS YOUR OUTPUT DC VOLTAGE MEASUREMENT INCREASED BY THE FILTER SMOOTHING CAPACITORS THAT ARE IN PARALLEL TO THE DC OUTPUT? NORMALLY, WITHOUT A LOAD, THE OUTPUT DC SHOULD BE QUITE LOWER THAN THE RMS OR AVERAGE INPUT AC VOLTAGE MINUS THE DOUBLE Vf OF THE RECTIFIER'S DIODES. IS THIS THE CASE HERE?

Every bridge rwctifier should read same voltage has yours, ac or dc. Or do they varied. Cause i check bridge rectifier and gives 327 dc.

I have a Vizio P65-C1 but it doesn't have standby volts. The only voltages going to the mainboard are 19V and they're all reading 0V

Get a fluke, the 87 V is the best but expensive, the cheapo MMs just don't cut it.

I am retired senior citizen. i am electrical engineer in power systems. not electronics. Since i have ample time started learning electronic eqpt repairs. i have old UBL DSC500(230V)-Digital simply cinema. The problem is when the unit is switched on it remains on for a while and then trips. no dc power. After 10-15 seconds the switches on and trips once again . this goes on. I tried to identify defective component in SMPS. but i could not. Everything appears good on SMPS. Visibly main board appears clean. Can you please advise how to go about?
    thanks.
