  • #vanlifeuk #yorkshire We chose some bad places to park-up this week, doing winter van life in the UK
This week, we continue North of England & Yorkshire in our converted Ford Transit Friday campervan, visiting Scarborough and Robin Hood's Bay
There was only one park up out the four that came out OK, the rest had boy racers, speeding cars all night, and windy.
It was an enjoyable week regardless, but we will always show you the ups and downs, no matter what happens

Love watching your videos, both of you are entertaining and show with honesty how van life is, the good and the bad . I would say winter is the hardest time of the year yet you are both still positive . you both complement each other very well. In years to come you'll have many many stories to tell together with so many memories 💖 bless you both xxx

It’s the fact that life throws them daily challenges, they meet and deal with head on , that adds to the variety .

Hey guys....I had this problem in my first build. Similar set up to yours. What I did was remove the wooden sides separating the bed from the kitchen counter. Then I created a raised frame just under the mattress that took the mattress to just above the height of the worktop. I added heavy duty runners to the raised frame and added thick plyboard across them. So if you imagine, the ply sheet pulls out into the van itself, over the work surface from the raised space you've created. You put a cut to fit piece of memory foam on it and you can then sleep with your head by back doors on a super wide bed with loads of leg room that you retract back under the raised frame in the day time. I hope that makes sense!!! It worked really well for me - I'm 5"11 but you can make your pull-out as long as you need. We MUST keep you on the road and comfy!! Keep making these amazing videos! Hugs, Tracy 😍

Ya'll are my favorite van life couple! You give a realistic view to life on the road. I only made it three years and I was in a 13×40 foot RV I had to throw in the towel! Couldn't get use to the uncertainty of transient life. People who haven't lived in a home on wheels won't understand just how completely nerve wracking it can be to simply travel down uncertaint roads where you don't know if you'll be able to park or get stuck etc. Wishing you both new year wishes from Nashville Tennessee ✌💫

@Derek Duxbury absolutely! The negative outweighed the positive so it was time to change directions. If we did it again we would do things differently as we learned a lot through our experience. Keep in mind I enjoy roots and community something I found challenging to create as a nomad. And we were rambling down the road in a huge Blue Bird Wander Lodge so our options were often very limited! ✌️

Hope you two are having a great day today 😊. I was concerned about your van's humidity problem can turn to mold. In the States there is a product that absorbs humidity (damp rid) or you can make your own DIY with kitty litter in a box. Or small dehumidifiers are sold on amazon (do you have a wish list). Also putting newsprint in your shoes helps them dry faster. Change the newsprint if it gets damp. Haa, I was searching for solutions like a good granma would. Keep having fun living the good life! 😃

Idea for bed: build either a slide out or flip up extension on the side of the bed that extends into you kitchen aisle. Create a mattress piece that you use as a pillow on the bed when not in use. Attach to extension with double sided velcro. Until you did a more permanent solution?

The hills in that neck of the woods are so steep. I remember crying while driving up a hill near Whitby, in 1st gear in my old T2 VW. It was literally about to give up and roll backwards and there was a car right on my tail. I was crying saying ‘I’m not going to maaaake it!’, after that every time I saw one of those road signs with the steep incline, I got the absolute fear! 😧

Oh Liam, I feel so much for you on the short bed thing. It must feel so claustrophobic at night when you can't stretch out at all. I know a lot of vanlifes don't mind (I follow a woman who slept for YEARs crouched up in a tiny Kangoo camper van WITH her huge dog) Some people are fine with it, but obviously: many arent. I have seen some build outs with a bed that slides out the other way and kind of slides over the kitchen. Obviously it brings other issues with it (no more making coffee while one person is still sleeping etc. I suppose any layout change brings sacrifices. But I do agree with others here: sleep is SO VERY important. I would really keep your eyes out for layout changes without sacrificing your kitchen, I know they are there. ) I also have seen many people installing "bump outs" which add an inch or so on each side of the van in the bed area to just notch the bed up those critical inches for taller folks. Seems to be a bit on the pricey side too. It would be shame for you to have to give up full time van life because of a few inches of bed space needed to let you sleep better :(

    • @ThoseHappyDays
      @ThoseHappyDays  2 ปีที่แล้ว

Sorry about the problems you ar experiencing. The most important thing is to sort out the bed. Over time you wil develop a very bad back, so don't kid yourself. It's better to be realistic now, so you change the situation and you'll immediately be much better off in many ways. If you can't change the layout, you'll have to consider changing the van. This sounds extreme but it's essential to look after your back, not to mention the sleep issues. Bite the bullet and deal with it sooner rather than later. I'm short and it's only just ok for me to sleep across the van, but at 6.2 it's definitely no good for you. I have spinal problems, so I know what I'm saying. Thanks for the video, but do deal with your bed issues soon. Happy new year X

For the short term could you just get a bit of plywood cut to 6ft x the width of the walkway. Store it flat underneath the mattress during the day then at night turn it round 90 degrees and have it sticking out as far as you need it. Your body weight should hold the bit that's still under the mattress in position then put a couple of pillows on the bit that extends.

We lived full time for five years and did two Winters in the Uk. Yes its hard but we had the luxury of a full heated MH. Around the boy racer/Rave situation. Many times over the years of full timing we parked up and then had cars turn up for their nights fun. Yes its inconvenient from your point of view but as we know there is no rule against what they were doing. This happened to us in the Uk and mainland Europe without any feeling of intimidation. At no time have the other visitors interfered with us the van in any way. We always make a point of parking up, not on blocks and in a position to just drive off if required. Its amazing how many people get up and walk dogs at 5 o'clock in the morning. You will love the Yorkshire coast line

Hi just watched you video and may have a solution for the bed issue. There are companies which make side flares which give bit more space inside the van. Also try opening a window slightly and run the fan on extract to help with the condensation.

I had a similar bed problem in my Berlingo, because I wanted a comfy small armchair as well , so I raised part of the kitchen storage area, put two boxes under for storage during the day , at night the two boxes go on top of unit and my feet fit underneath!Trust you get it sorted God bless.

Love your videos - so glad that the parking ticket was a jest (we're a funny lot in Yorkshire 😁). If you're still touring about in North Yorkshire, hope you get to Helmsley. Beautiful little market town with an official free (6pm-9am) park-up in the overflow carpark beside the castle. We've often overnighted there - peaceful, yet central with some lovely walks. A quick question, is there a reason that you haven't headed for warmer climes during the winter? We usually head for the South of Spain, though admittedly Covid has put paid to that for the last 2 years. Our van needs some work at the moment, but once that's done (and it's had it's MOT) we will be buggering off to the sun 😂

Brilliant episode as usual, we so look forward to them every week.
Boy racers are an occupational hazard for van lifers. Glad they only played music. The larger the car park the greater the risk of them turning up in our experience.
Dog shite is my worst fear in the van so I try and check before getting into the van but that doesn’t stop you stepping in it. A spray bottle with water and a bit of disinfectant together with a small brush that just get’s used for that is pretty effective for cleaning the shoes.
What does Korma really taste like ? We have visited loads of Indian restaurants and never had the same taste twice on any curry. I usually go for a dhansak but they all taste very different 😁
The water strategy seems a pain. How about marking a minimum line on the tank below which you swap them before settling down. It’s mentally more doable before you get cosy and it saves losing precious heat. You could consider a second pump from tank 2 into tank 1 that you could use to transfer some if you ran out. It’s power supply could just be plugged into a 12v socket when needed, no need for a switch. Might be a rubbish suggestion but I thought I would mention it.
The bed is a serious problem. We take a night in a hotel on longer trips to get some respite but that is no solution for full time life. Some van lifers have created alcoves and made the van a little wider but I don’t know how they do it. I wonder if you could string a hammock for a bit of respite. I know a TH-camr who sleeps that way in his Landrover Defender. Not a long term solution but it might buy time. I saw a van that had a bed that got winched up to the ceiling during the day. It was an ingenious design that allowed it to be levelled so the van could park on a slope if needed. He had a lounge during the day and the bed lowered at night.
I know the feeling when a drone is being blown away. The adrenalin really kicks in which is why you shake afterwards. You probably already know but switch immediately into sports mode, start flying back whilst getting it as low as you dare. The wind strength gets less nearer to the ground. If it’s not working land it where you can reach it and walk out to get it. The display shows you the speed it’s flying and the distance from you. If that distance is not reducing and your height is low then land it before it gets out of reach. Practice this routine when it’s not too windy so it becomes automatic. It’s also worth practicing how to find the drone using the controller if it’s landed out of sight. Time is the essence when that happens as it’s battery will eventually die. It’s saved me loads of times now and it will really help your confidence.
Your film making is excellent. It just keeps getting better and better so bloody well done.
Magic fingers Maxwell has a clever strategy, many of your viewers will take a look at him I am sure. We will, he better be good 😁👍
Stay safe and we hope Liam’s back improves.

Guys I don’t know is you read your comments but I think you would really benefit from a cordless Karcher window vac for the window condensation. You could cover the bare metal that’s soaking the corner of the bed with 4 way stretch carpet to help to insulate and there is a sensor you can put in your water storage to tell you when the waste is getting full and the fresh water is running out. Love all your videos 👍
