  • Here are 3 easy to sing traditional songs played on nontraditional instruments.I sing these songs the way the elders taught me to sing them at sunrise services in Cherokee, N.C. We sing them every 6 months at the Cherokee Indian sobriety campout and convention. The campout is the first weekend of may every year. The Cherokee water song is for blessing and raising the resonance of your water and should be sung seven times, each time a little faster, as you hold your water jug clos to your heart.

Hey Jah hey waya Ya wey is a universal native vocable, it beseeches and cries for the Creator, Tunkashila, Yahweh, to hear our welcome song and bless our visitors, our relatives. to hear us

Choctaw and Cherokee here. I play the mountain dulcimer and until now I never thought to sing our songs like this. Was beautiful!

We're all full-blooded humans. And so what if some of us are half blood Native American? My Cherokee ancestors are still 100% my ancestors.

Very little is known about this Cherokee water song. It is difficult to even verify whether or not it is actually Cherokee, and there is no translation, to my understanding. It is said that this song is sung to raise the resonance of the water, and that water was the first gift given to man by the gods.
    lyrics
. There are no written lyrics.
    Phonetically, the lyrics are:
"Witchita do ya, do ya, do ya
Witchita do ya yo ya, way
    A cha chaneya eya eya
    A cha chaneya eya ey
    ey ey ey"
This is approximated to the best of my knowledge. credits

So my great grandmother was Cherokee (from what the family says) but I haven't been able to find official records. Lately I've felt drawn to my ancestors and I'm trying to find some way to reconnect with the Cherokee Nation. Do you have any idea if there's a good way to do that?

Joshua Ellington we have similar situations. Almost all of my ancestry is Cherokee but sadly neither of my grandparents were raised learning about Cherokee culture. I am taking it upon myself to carry on tradition so just a do a lot of research, lots of TH-cam videos are informational, and go to the Cherokee Nation website to learn more. I actually do Native American beadwork.

This is truly amazing :D I never got to learn a lot of the Cherokee language,I know a few words, but that is not enough for me.I try to learn each and every day(: I didn't learn the first two songs, but I know every word of The Morning Song.I do not understand why people like to be disrespectful to Native Americans. They are people just like us.I am part Cherokee and I find it very rude and hurtful for them to say harsh, crude things towards all Native Americans.

I notice some complaining and being offended saying it's an offense to full bloods...if that's so then what about Walker Calhoun? He was a tradional full blood elder and he played the banjo to some of the traditional Cherokee songs! And others here DO remember their Cherokee elders singing these songs and were blessed hearing them again. I love the songs too!!

    • @ajsanders6664
      @ajsanders6664 2 ปีที่แล้ว

These are the people who do not know ourTsalagi history. Chief John Ross was 7/8 Scottish highlander. His mother supplied him with the only “blood” and was only a quarter herself. It’s not about your percentage. As Wilma Mankiller (another chief) said , “it’s about how Indian you feel”. how you represent the percentage you do have. Most of the time the ones that complain about offense, just want to start something because of their own misery. I appreciate this man posting our beautiful songs, Wado!
