    When my Dad did his '56 Bel Air convertible, '55 and '56 T- birds, he used a home-made rotisserie and swore by it. Keep in mind he was much older then you at the time, and for ease of welding, accessibility, and preservation of his body, it was the way to go. You probably don't need it for what you are doing, but they do make underbody repairs a lot easier...

    Hey Ed man! the 55 has come a long ways looking really good now.
    Belair trim would look nice but you are right they want a lot of money for it. Took me awhile to find enough good pieces that I could repair.
    If you decide your going with the trim around the side windows I do have the right and left pieces for the C piller. Let me know.
    There is a guy on ebay that sells all the rest of the pieces you would need but some of them he thinks they are gold lol.

      Thanks very much. I'm pretty sure that I won't go with the upper window trim. I really think I want the one that goes under the window and on the door. You can grind down the welds between series and hammer dolly them to let the stress off the welds so it doesn't warp.

    • @SlowCarFix
      @SlowCarFix  ปีที่แล้ว

      that's a good thought but I'm not sure I agree with it. Grinding puts a lot of heat in the panel. I do hammer and dolly as I grind as well because I can see it moving around.

  • @greggonzalez7396
    @greggonzalez7396 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Nice repair on the panel. I like your approach to safety I feel that it's always important. As far as trim I have seen lots of cars with different levels of trim. The Bel Air was always a classic look but even the 150 model looks good. Your car your decision and I believe what ever you choose will be right for your car. I would not do the rotisserie just to much work. You can always clean up the underside as you move forward. Really looking forward to the next step on your 55.

    • @SlowCarFix

      Thanks very much. I'm leaning towards just getting the body off the frame and supporting the body with my scissor lift under the new floor. Then I would have access to the parts in the trunk and wheel wells that I want to work on. We'll see how it goes. I think the trim will depend on what's available. I don't really want to buy new and make it look old, that would be a shame. Thanks for sticking with me.

    Nice tips on welding . I am a retired boilermaker tube welder . I cringe at utubers on safety. Cutting with a cutting disc without a guard is scary. I have seen what happens if you flex that disc .they explode . Welding without a hood . Yes I have done it . I have burned my eyes many many times. I like respirators the correct ones . Painting one for painting and pink for welding and grinding . I understand cosmetic welding . Spraying water on hot welds to prevent warping. Then in the next sentence complain about hard metal . Another using wire wheels stainless with a grinder . Those will take your eye out . Wear a faceshield and Eyewear. Your over the top perfection . Like you Malibu and corvairs .

    • @SlowCarFix
      @SlowCarFix  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Some of the best welders I've seen are Boiler makers. I'm a Millwright and Electrician. I learned to weld to stay employed in construction. I try to make a habit of using my helmet as intended. I also always have a guard on my grinder, it's a pain, but I've never had an incident. I've seen someone take a zip disc in the belly and it was almost fatal. Insane. I was too hard on myself in construction and I try to do the best I can now so I can enjoy this work for many years yet. I've got a few big projects I want to do yet. Thanks for watching and following along.

    Ed use a paint stick to mix the filler , mix it Thorley and use your spreader to clean the paint stick. when you put the filler on all ways put it on as smooth as you can and don't put it where you don't need it at. i used this filler before but, i like short strand fiberglass reinforced filler better i find is much EZR to work with. it uses the same type of hardner as body filler. i have been a bodyman and painter for 48 years so i like what works best for me to get stuff done EZR . your quarters are looking great with the one piece lower quarters welded on. i keep the cars i build for at least 10 years so i do stuff so i don't have to redo it. when the weather warms up i am going to build my 55 ragtop body. it is getting a patina paint job with used trim. i want it to look unrestored , it is way more fun that way. keep up the good work and cool videos. ps i found most of the parts for my 55 on ebay.

    • @SlowCarFix
      @SlowCarFix  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks for the tips. I need them. I don't want this to break out, so I'll do my best to seal things up. I have never painted a full car, only parts, so this one will be a first for me. Then I'll sand it all and make it look worn. Looking forward to seeing more pictures of your '55 build.

      @@SlowCarFix thanks Ed i started working in a bodyshop when i was 18 . the guy taught me very well , i am so grateful that i worked for him for years. i learned to weld with torches , and he showed me how do bodywork and paint whole cars and spot repairs . we used lacquer back in the 70's. i dont know how many cars i painted since back then. at 66 i cant stop building cool old cars and trucks. im tired of buffing paint so now im more into the weathered patina paint look and old cars that i can drive everyday. i just bought a cool old lenco panel spot welder to put the 55 together with. i figure i will use it on most of of my other builds too. i am going to try to do some videos when i start back on the 55 again . stay warm up there.

  • @tompalcie6284

    Knocking down the highs with a cheese grater file cuts down your sanding time in about half. It also sands easier once you get through the top skin of the puddy.

  • @johnnylom9915
    @johnnylom9915 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Good Luck I HATE body work. Ive worked many many times without a rotisserie but it ""depends"" on how much work you need to do underneath. You are already wanting to separate the body from the frame so if you put the body on a rotisserie you will find it a lot easier to work on. Specially when you get to my age lol

    • @SlowCarFix

  • @tompalcie6284
    @tompalcie6284 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    The key to using the stranded filler is to knock it down with a cheese grater before it totally sets up. Once it completely hardens it's a bear to sand

    • @SlowCarFix
      @SlowCarFix  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yeah, that's one of the reasons why I didn't use the stranded stuff. I like this stuff, it's actually metal and even a week later it sands well. Hopefully I can stay away from the kity hair stuff.

  • @mikebaca522
    @mikebaca522 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    ED , I put my 53 on a light weight rotisserie to get at the frame. That said the only way it helped was to blast the underside because of the evil undercoating on these cars to much flame and scrape and numerous hours just to do the pass, floor underneath. 200 bucks plus the rotisserie. Saved plenty of time and thats money. Don't think for a moment that the cars are light all. and your right about proper attitude and patience...

    • @SlowCarFix
      @SlowCarFix  ปีที่แล้ว

      I have to think about it a bit more. With the new one piece floor, and the new section of trunk floor, there isn't a lot left to scrape. That's exactly my reason to want to gain access though. The wheel wells turned out great. The chassis being off the car is a must I think to be able to properly go through the chassis and suspension and paint the whole frame. I'll figure it out, I usually seem to. Thanks for watching.

  • @jeffhazlehurst3674
    @jeffhazlehurst3674 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Hi Ed. Car is looking good so far. As far as using a rotisserie, if possible, I would try to get a really good look at the bottom side of the car before you decide against using a rotisserie. Better off to be sure that there are no issues first. With the car being a sedan, how much extra bracing would you have to do, to use a rotisserie, considering the new metal and all of the welding that you've already done?

    • @SlowCarFix
      @SlowCarFix  ปีที่แล้ว

      I'm definitely pulling the frame off, but I'm leaning towards picking up the new one piece floor with my scissor lift and having just the body on the lift. This would give me access to the part above the rear axle and the outer wheel wells that I need to work on. I'm on the fence, but need to decide soon.

    • @SlowCarFix
      @SlowCarFix  ปีที่แล้ว

      Dan with dd speed shop did them functional on his 55 because he had a donor car. I don't intend to because this car will have A/C and likely the only one in the back is going to be our dog.

  • @jpowers667
    @jpowers667 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Two door Post cars with a good floor, side quarter panels like you have now!! you don't need any support braces with a rotisserie. Post cars are much more ridged.. If you had a 2 dr hard top or a convertible, and were cutting out the floors and rear quarters and such, Then YES braces everywhere.. Again thanks for sharing..

    • @SlowCarFix
      @SlowCarFix  ปีที่แล้ว

      Well, this was a 4 door, so there is that. I've replaced the floor with a new one piece floor, which definitely gave the car from structure. I'm not sure yet if I want to bother with a rotisserie. The body has to come off the frame, but really I only need access to the piece of the trunk above the axle. Everything else is new metal. I'll give it more thought. Thanks for watching.

    Hey Ed, love your content! I'm a beginner at this, currently working on 4 link into my '56 Chev pickup. I had asked about your Aldan shocks before, thanks. I am curious now to your scissor jack. Do you like it? I'm thinking about getting one as well. I don't really have space for a t post lift as I'm in a house on the golf course! The neighbours don't even like my noise lol! Thanks

    • @SlowCarFix
      @SlowCarFix  ปีที่แล้ว

      My scissor is great. It's an old Snap On unit that I got as part of a deal when I bought a '66 Corvair one time. I have 3 x 4 posts, and they are my preference because you can use them for storage, and have a sliding jack to lift the car off the hoist to do mechanical work. However, they have a pretty big foot print. They can also be moved around on casters. I don't like 2 post lifts for a home shop. It ties up a lot of space, and with it being anchored to the floor, there's 2 big posts in your way all the time when not using them. The scissor is great for things like this '55, or pulling engines out of Corvairs/ VW's as they come out the bottom. It's not great if you need to access anything down the center of the car. Also, you aren't getting full height, so it's a bit tough that way and has it's limitations. For body work, it's fantastic. For exhaust or driveshafts etc, it's useless. It is not easy to move around, but it can be moved but it requires some effort. I like having it for sure, and it gets used every day. The coes and Llama next door don't seem to mind my noise. Thanks for watching.

    • @sarblade
      @sarblade ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@SlowCarFix Thanks Ed, it sounds like I would like a scissor, especially for the body work I have to do. I'd love to have a 4 post, but don't have the room. I tried to talk the wife into moving to an area where I can have a shop, but she vetoes me, she wants to stay a townie! SnapOn is great stuff, albeit expensive, I was looking at Princess Auto out here. I know its China manufactured, but it gets good reviews. Be great when you change over one of your Corvairs to electric!

    • @SlowCarFix
      @SlowCarFix  ปีที่แล้ว

      @@sarblade I don't think there's any issues with the PA ones. I know a few people that have them. I fluked into mine. I don't think I'll be making one of my Corvairs electric. I recently gutted one for a friend/customer of mine and he has another shop converting it to electric. I drive a Tesla to work every day. It's great for what it does, but when I want to drive an old car, I like to hear and feel it. Just a preference.

    You should sand the metal with a 40 grit filler needs a rough surface to adhere to. Most people will prime the surface first to seal it then apply the filler. You'll probably want to coat the entire panel first then see how it goes from there.

    • @SlowCarFix
