  • The Wuppertaler Schwebebahn is is one of the oldest (dating back to 1901) electrified elevated railways with hanging cars in the world and is a unique system on its own. The 13,3 Km route runs from Vohwinkel, via Wuppertal to Oberbarmen and is one major modes of public transport in the region, transporting around 82.000 people per day, or 25 million passengers annually.
The cars are suspended on rail tracks on top of the structure an power is provided through a system not unlike a third rail on the underside of the track. Currently, the system has been upgraded to facilitate 750 v required by the new cars (wich is 600 v at the moment) wich are currently on order at Vossloh Kiepe.
