  • Back to the Euro Haul! In this episode Leandro drunkenly tastes Swedish Aquavit.
    Today we dive deeper into the rabbit hole of Aquavit, his time tasting Aquavit from Sweden where we take a deep dive into the flavor profiles of each Aquavit and comparing/contrasting to the Norwegian Aquavit I tasted earlier that day (or five minutes before LOL) Leandro is a bit tipsy in this one. It was toward the end of a long tasting day. Hope you guys like the tasting and it's at least a little informative!

    I would say that most swedes would drink their aquavit (or snaps) chilled. It is mostly served as shots with certain types of food like pickled herring and crayfish.

      I used to agree with this, but if you want to really appreciate the taste then you should drink it at room temperature

    Fun fact: back in the days here in Sweden they used to call the Skåne Akvavit "chauffeurs drink" because you supposedly didnt get any alcoholsmell on your breath from it.

    That orange type flavour that you mentions probably comes from "Pomerans" (Bitter orange). The dried peals of Bitter Oranges are popular ingredients when flavouring certain types of aquavites. Some brands also use tamarind and/or dried cilantro seeds.
    As for my self I´m currently making an aquavit flavoured with dill, fennel, caraway and cowslip flowers (Just the yellow part of the blooming flower). It´ll be ready just in time for the traditional swedish midsummer party! 🥂

    When I think of fennel versus anise, I associated fennel with Italian sausage and anise with black liquorice. They are similar but not the same. Loved both these vidoes!

    Ideas/requests in the spirit of this channel - 1) Discuss liquor oxidation, storage, preservation, and how long things can keep. I had a special bottle of single malt that oxidized and changed after several years and was an expensive learning experience. There are things that "preserve" open wine, etc. - how can they be used to keep that bottle of Punt E Mes fresher longer?; 2) Similar to the aquavit series - an Amari series, a couple vermouth series, etc. 3) "5 essential Amari for the home bar" or similar - top 5 with some interesting honorable mentions.

    As someone from skåne ive got to say skåne akvavit is my favourite, but if I got to be truthfull i think op Anderson is probably the best. Great video btw!

    As a Swede I’ve been looking forward to this! We are many who LOVE aquavit in Sweden but perhaps not the youngsters. It’s mandatory during Christmas and Midsummer. It would be super cool if you did some videos with cocktails where aquavit is the base spirit! Btw, do you taste bourbon straight from the bottle too? ;)

    • @freepour
      @freepour  4 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Of course I taste bourbon straight from the bottle. If I had tiny bottles....

    • @goranlund2677
      @goranlund2677 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      As a Swede, you should know that you don't mix aquavit with anything. It is straight or not at all.

    That's interesting that you mention chilling being a flavor inhibitor. Why do you think there isn't more of a movement toward room temperature or warm cocktails? A warmed Manhattan actually sounds kind of delicious.

    • @freepour
      @freepour  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Because honestly a warm manhattan is gross LOL, chilled is the way to go for cocktails but cold is a flavor inhibitor

    Supposedly Skåne Akvavit is exactly the same spice blend as OP Andersson but with half the amount of spices. It may have been invented due to poor economy at the time.

    So Frozen is based on a Hans Christian Andersen, a Dane, tale and when he wrote it the King of Denmark was also the King of Norway and they were pretty much the same country, but not exactly one single country. At least compared to subsequent Swedish-Norwegian Union which is more akin to Canada and UK sharing a monarch than being the same country. It's complicated and Marius, if he paid attention is school, probably knows more than me. So it is likely that Elsa is from Norway and Marius is right.

    • @freepour
      @freepour  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Yeah I’m sure you and Marius are both right. I think I knew somewhere in the recesses of my brain that Hans Christian Anderson wrote the story The Ice Queen which inspired frozen

    I think the orange adjacent flavor you're picking up in Gammal Norrlands might actually be the elderflower, which is also a very traditional Swedish aquavit flavor, perhaps most prominently featured in Hallands Fläder. Anyway, skål!

    I think of anise and fennel being similar, but think of fennel as a smoother and sweeter flavor.

    Great episode! I love aquavit! It would be cool if you could do a cocktail with any of them. For me it’s a flavour difficult to combine, but as you did present an Underberg drink, maybe you could find something nice. If you do I’ll swear I’ll serve it next midsummer!

    The best akvavit is the Blekinge akvavit from my home province
    Most people in sweden actually drink akvavit chilled
    The anis and fenal has a taste that in some way is similar to licorice but still not licorise

    No aqua vit shuld not be in room temperature. It shuld be served at -18 degrees Celsius... so put it in the freezer one day before drinking.

    Nice video! But did you know: Skånes Aquavit has the same spice mixture as OP Andersson, but with twice the amount of base spirit. So just a "watered down" OP. Also... Sad you missed out on Hallands Aquavit, might be my favorite one.

    • @rickardmoberg1525
      @rickardmoberg1525 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      mrkringlan Hallands is not an aquavit, if I’m not mistaken, at least it doesn’t taste like it even remotely. Still good though ;)

    Arendal is a real city in Norway, but it's unfortunately not a magical kingdom. 😂And yes, Frozen was totally based on Norwegian culture and landscapes. Disney sent their producers and animators on a grand tour of Norway to gather inspiration. The Frozen palace is even inspired by the Akershus castle in Oslo and the people in the magical forest were based on the Sami people in Northern Norway 🇳🇴 ❤️ Greetings from Oslo!

    So, tried it.. (the stock 84)
    Its like a weaker brandy. Its a lot more neutral, lacks sweetness. Flavor is similar to our native grape brandy called rakia, but somehow a lot softer. Smell is also reminiscent of brandy, but a lot weaker.. suppose a like a diluted brandy-whiskey mix.. i think dubbing the flavor "grape peel pate" is appropeiate
