  • I LOVE the JackBox series, and have been reviewing the new backs when they come out for the last few years. For the sake of full, comprehensive coverage, I am making my way backwards and reviewing the first 3 JackBox Party Pack games. This is my JackBox 2 Review

    "The sequel to the party game phenomenon The Jackbox Party Pack, featuring FIVE fresh, rib-tickling party games! Games include:"
    The Jackbox Party Pack 2 includes:
    ------------------
    Fibbage 2 (2-8 players)
    The runaway hit bluffing game with over 500 brand-new questions, more than 2x the original! Plus new features, like the deFIBrillator!
    Earwax (3-8 players)
    The hear-larious sound-effects game that will leave you up to your ears in laughter!
    Cow moo? Huge explosion? Or tiny fart? Which to choose?
    Bidiots (3-6 players)
    The absurd art auction game where you draw right there on your phone or tablet. Outbid your opponents for weird art pieces - drawn by players themselves - and win this strangely competitive auction game! Don’t be a bidiot!
    Quiplash XL (3-8 players)
    The say-anything, gut-busting Quiplash XL, which includes everything in Quiplash, Quip Pack 1, AND over 100 brand-new prompts!
    Bomb Corp. (1-4 players)
    The bomb-defusing nailbiter of a party game! As interns at Bomb Corp., you must defuse random bombs in the office in order to keep your jobs. You’ll probably die, but it’ll be good work experience!
    ------------------
    This Jackbox Party Pack 2 review provides both summaries of each games individual themes and gameplay, as well as my overall impressions on the pack. What does and doesn't work? What could be improved? How does it stack up overall?

    This party pack was played to death at my friends house whenever we go over we always play. Before school, at parties it didn’t matter! We were always playing this party pack. Fibbidge was the most popular by far but I absolutely *loved* Bidiots, although everyone else got bored with it (probably because I kept winning)

    When me and my friends got together, Bidiots, Quiplash XL, and Earwax were the favorites. This time we have each bought one Party Pack for our own Switches and are all bringing them to one household. Even though we will have a lot of options, I bet this pack will be the most play for Earwax and Bidiots alone.

      Being able to bring around your different switches with 1 pack each seems like a great way to do things!
      I knew someone out there had to like Earwax haha. Glad to know it isn't universally despised. That bodes well for Jackbox's bottom line, and helps ensure we get plenty of future packs!

    What I noticed from every jackbox, is that there's 1 or 2 classics like YDKJ or quiplash or fibbage and the new classic newcomer trivia murder party(welcome to the club) 2 new games that are fun and very popular(possible to become a cult classic) and the 1 new bad game that get quickly old or the execution was just isn't there.

    • @2leftthumbs
      @2leftthumbs  4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      It seems that way, eh?
      That actually gives me hope. While I'm often very critical of at least 1 game per pack, I genuinely hope they keep experimenting! Who knows when they'll stumble upon the next classic?

      I would love to see a Bidiots 2, with some sort of secondary games mode, like they did with Fibbage 3!
      I don't know what that would look like, but I feel like there is enough room in the art auction format to fit in something. Maybe there is like an art thief mode! Someone can choose to steal the art instead, but if they are caught/accused there is a penalty!

      If you already have other packs with Fibbage and Quiplash then I'd set this one as a lower priority. But if you feel like you'd like the extra variety, then I'd say it's still worth it! This pack in particular is old enough to have pretty dramatic sales. So I'd wait it out for one of those!

    I respectfully disagree with your opinion on Zeeple Dome. I avoided that because of everyone’s opinions… until late one night where I my friend turned it on against my will. Let me tell you; I laughed so hard I nearly started crying. When you don’t know about the die and resurrect mechanic and suddenly your corpse is floating into the sky… only to suddenly appear after you thought you were dead, floating across the screen and you begin screaming at your friends to save your dead corpse. Ah, cinematic gold

    Honestly, I quite like Earwax. What's so fun about it to me is the fact it's all up to your imagination. Unlike other games, you don't have to write out a wordy description or accurate drawing, heck, you don't even really have to come up with funny things yourself, you just pick and choose what sounds funnier, and everyone can get a perfect picture of what you were going for.
    I can certainly admit that it has a lot of growing pains, however. With the 3 points to win system, the games lengths are incredibly inconsistent. This often leads to games that are either so long that it's not funny anymore, or games that are so short that you don't really get anything out of them. As well as this, the selections of sounds can often be very limiting meaning people can't really do anything funny, or even related to the topic, and the Judge system makes the votes feel massively out of your control.
    I'd honestly be glad for them to bring this back, but they'd definitely have to rework it quite a bit. The core concept has a lot of potential and the game can be very fun in execution, but it definitely needs ironing out.

    • @stormbreak7003
      @stormbreak7003 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Totally agree with you. Another issue i also noticed is that the sounds you pick sometimes may not sound like you expect them too and can ruin the joke or answer to the topic.

    This is about the only party pack I haven't played (other than PP1, whose purpose has been made irrelevant thanks to its successors unless you want a YDKJ in the style of 2011 rather than 2018 or you've somehow used up 2 games worth of Fibbage prompts) so my thoughts on each game is going to be on first impressions and if I think it'll be a good fit for my group. (Hell, maybe I'll come back to this and have a few edits next to each game to reflect my group's overall thoughts on them.)
    Fibbage 2 seems about the same as Fibbage 3, except I don't like the aesthetic of Fibbage 2 as much and there isn't access to Enough About You. I think Fibbage is solid enough and it has more appeal to my group than YDKJ, but it doesn't have the top-tier charm of Trivia Murder Party.
    QuipLash XL's main strength seems to be in its sheer number of prompts. I've heard people say it has about 1000 prompts (and XL essentially has a QuipPack 2 packaged into it with an additional 100 prompts) so it sounds like repeats will be a very rare occurance even compared to QuipLash 2. The other main difference seems to be in the final round; it's much more average and consistent since it just grabs from the selection of Round 1-2 prompts, but I don't think that's necessarily a bad thing. In QuipLash 2's Last Lash, me and my group always shout out "YEEEAAAAHHH" when Comic-Lash comes up (we all like to make fun of stereotypical boomer comics) but there isn't nearly as much excitement when something like Acro-Lash comes up because it restricts creativity a lot more than in the other rounds or even other Last Lashes.
    As for my group's thoughts on the game, it's one of the all-time greats, right up there with Tee-KO in my group. It's quick, very accessible and easy to start up right away with no hoops. When Party Pack 7 comes out, QuipLash 3 will undoubtedly be the first game we start up and play, but until then QuipLash XL seems like a great way to spruce up our sessions with new prompts. The only reason I had more sour words to say about my experience about it in the last review was because one of the folks I enjoyed playing with had a falling out with the Jackbox sessions at the time, but he's getting back into it now.
    Bidiots also seems like quite the interesting title. The only reason it comes off as a "black horse" is because it's harder to understand; I watched a full let's play session of it, and I still didn't get exactly how it worked until this review; compare that to Drawful which can be described as "Fibbage but with silly player-made drawings" or Tee KO which can be described as "making quick, funny drawings, making quick, funny slogans, and mixing them into funny t-shirts that compete with each other". But the sound of "strategic Drawful" seems quite appealing to me, especially since recently I've been digging the strategic elements of Monster Seeking Monster, a game which doesn't look like it'd be as deep as it is when it comes to that sort of thing. Since the other drawing games (including Drawful 2, not including Civic Doodle except very occasionally) are considered top-tier games in my group, I think Bidiots will fit right in when I get Party Pack 2.
    Bomb Corp also looks like a fresh change of pace compared to the other Jackbox titles, and it seems like it would've been a good fit for those times in the past where I only got 1 or 2 other people for a session due to poor timing and games like QuipLash or Split the Rom felt like they had too few people at their minimum player levels. Personally, I'd love to play this as well, but when we're increasingly having more and more people for sessions (I've much more consistently been able to hold remote parties of 6-8 people for up to 4 hours), its low size might just be its weakness. This might be in the same territory as Role Models where I need to reserve the game for sessions inside a much smaller group DM of closer online friends.
    And then there's EarWax...it just seems too crude and immature, even for a group of meme-loving guys in our late teens. It feels like a dud in the same way that Lie Swatter and Word Spud are duds to me, and EarWax seems like the last of that type of more crude dud made during the formula's early growing pains; at least the arguably dud games in Packs 3-6 in future games at least have some redeeming qualities to them that make them worth trying out again once in a while, and they all have a certain charm to them not really as present in Lie Swatter, Word Spud, or EarWax. Maybe I'm overestimating even my group's low bar for humor, but I think this'll be the type of game we try out once, maybe twice to satisfy our curiosity and put back on the shelf while we go back to the classics.
    Few other thoughts I'm having unrelated to Party Pack 2: I think I might try and make this sort of mini-review comment for your other reviews on the other channel, it's at least a fun writing exercise. And seeing as you've now made a review for all but one party pack, I think it might be fun to see you do a tier list video putting each individual game from packs 1-6 into a ranking rather than putting each pack into a ranking.

    • @2leftthumbs
      @2leftthumbs  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I agree, between the YDKJ reboot, and standalone Drawful 2, there is really no reason to play the original pack if you have access to those newer titles. I haven't played it in a long time though! So maybe Word Spud and Lie Swatter are better than I remember? The idea of these packs having "growing pains" is actually really well put! The team does a great job with variety, and experimenting. But you can really see in these early packs where they weren't quieeet sure what a "typical" JackBox game would become.
      Earwax has a mild shock value to it. It's like Cards Against Humanity. You might get some laughs the first time from the absurdity. But it has 0 staying power.
      The 80's aesthetic of Fibbage 3 was PERFECT! I really liked the weird art of 2, but it feels lacking when coming back to it now.
      I have high hopes for Quiplash 3, and that they do something better for the 3rd Round. Comic Lash really is the only great one. The rest are just a buzzkill after all the other laughs had.
      Bidiots unfortunately makes no sense to watch, unless you already understand what is happening. If you've played it once, then you'll get it and probably like it. But any time someone in the group is new to Bidiots, it's difficult to explain, they are confused throughout, fall behind early, and don't really have a chance. Then that makes them less likely to want to try again. I think that's kind of why it feels so underrated? People either haven't tried it, or only that one time when they lost miserably.
      That's always a tough one, with smaller game maximums. The other night we had 7 players, so I teamed up with Brette for Bidiots, since we were the only 2 in the same room, and we had to skip Role Models altogether. I know not every game works with larger groups, but it's always something to keep in mind.
      Doing a full ranking of individual games is something we talked about doing After the JBPP5. I was going to get several people from our group to make their own ranking, and average them out. Now might be a good time to revisit that concept? Although I dislike the idea of the list becoming increasingly more outdated every year. I'm not sure if re-ranking them each year would feel excessive or not?

    • @TarlukLegion
      @TarlukLegion 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@2leftthumbs You would already have a baseline in the form of packs 1-6 to go off of, so in your reviews of newer packs, you could give each game a ranking as you already did Party Pack 3 but with letters corresponding to the tier list instead of a numbered score out of 10. So for instance, you might rate QuipLash 3 an S, or a game on the same level as Joke Boat a D (or something like a C- if you really wanted to go that extra mile), etc. That way, you wouldn't have to redo the tierlist video every year because the reviews of each pack onwards would already serve as addendums to that video.
      I think your explanation of Bidiots was pretty good! It sure helped me understand it a lot better, and I'm thinking of sending the friends in my group DM a link to that portion of the video.

    I only played one round of earwax, but I fairly enjoyed it. If they ever made a sequel to the game, I think it would be funny if instead of choosing from a few different sound effects, you made your own by speaking into your microphone, and you could name them, and they would play for the group. So, make it like quiplash but with sounds.
