  • Nearly a hundred elephants are slaughtered each day in the wild, most for their ivory tusks. This killing of elephants by humans could wipe out the animals in the wild within a generation.

    National Geographic initiated an eight-month survey, conducted by GlobeScan, in five countries: China, the Philippines, Thailand, Vietnam, and the United States. The survey shows that the ivory market is driven by a perceived suitability for gift giving and the social status ivory ownership conveys.
    Twenty-two percent of respondents across all five countries expressed strong intent to buy ivory.
    "You want to make purchasing ivory and owning ivory socially unacceptable," says National Geographic Society Chief Science and Exploration Officer Terry Garcia.
    Likely buyers, on average, tend to fall into the low- to middle-income bracket, skew younger than average, and are somewhat more likely to have a religious affiliation.
    The September 2015 National Geographic magazine cover story, "Tracking Ivory," features a special investigation by journalist and National Geographic Fellow Bryan Christy, who used fake tusks and hidden GPS devices to expose poachers and the route of the illegal ivory trade. Christy's investigative reporting is also the subject of the National Geographic Channel premiere "Explorer: Warlords of Ivory" on August 30.

    i had the opportunity to hear jane goodall speak on conservation once. Her message was that to save a species you need to save the people near them first. Programs that reward people for a healthy elephant population will succeed -- for example, if you pay more rangers, give a community cash per healthy elephant, conservation could win. In places where a daily salary can be as low as 0.34 USD per day, small donations from individual conservation minded people around the globe could fund desperately needed human projects in areas where the locals receive financial benefit from supporting conservation efforts. I would donate to this program if it exists.

      Tara Khoo You know, the more a resource is rare and hard to find or even illegal, the more valuable it become.
      When a resource because so rare and valuable, it become an icon of wealth and social standing.
      ''Look how great I am, I own ''this'' and is worth more than you can earn in years"
      Boasting, Standing, Awe , Beauty of it, beliefs...
      There are many many reasons why humans kills or takes things and put a high value on them, like Ivory.

      😟us being just like humans that love to eat meat And that's why even 10000 years ago since they hunted the elephants that are called the wooly Mammoths with longer Fur that we is that we use their tusk And elephants are the next on the menu for song these And elephants are Already are hunted for the tough just like the wooly Mammoths the elephants that people hunted And I think that history History of the elephant will emanate his right about how elephants will go extinct By the humans that will make that happen With more hunting if they really succeeded Is growing in population of that country content and that's why elephants population are going down and that's the same repeated history of the elephants called the wooly mammoths knowing how sad that is How Is the elephant called woolly mammoths that went extinct And Murphy and the humans have did 10000 years Ago And this happens today with elephants like our human ancestors have done and these humans that Have still doing the same repeated history over again And this is real And we try to stop them but I think they won't just like in ancient history of our human ancestors have done it Is Is elephant ancestors Have been extinct and you know how sad that is same could be sad for the elephants That couldn't go extinct already And this it will be the same path filled it's the same path the elephants will be in the Exact same way the Wooly mammoth that are the elephants that will be on the same path And they will disappear from the face of the Earth They come in just legends Of how they became extinct how not able to stop The humans and the extinction of the elephants It's like with our human ancestors that have done this to the wooly mammoths the elephants Because what will we do with other creatures are going extinct already And if that doesn't shark you how the elephants will go extinct just like the wooly mammoths Are the elephants That wint estate report and the exact same extension could be said for the elephant when you think about it that's pretty scary to think about that And you know what this is what scares me becauyeah scares me because of how that will be like how elephants will be extinct at that same situation and how we are gonna look only at elephants in the museum Is in the year 2040 I'm sorry people that's where the extinction Of the elephants will happen for Is shorter Is year of that happening With weeks months of that happening already I think this is a wake up call to these people that we need to protect these elephants But you know People that are poachers that are doing it they don't care And even the people that are doing it they don't care either That's like the human ancestors that don't care before after hunting the elephants called wooly mammoths they will do the exact same thing And that will Be the real same thing we're going on this on this path see in this history this history being repeated again I mean you will only be seeing elephants in textbooks And other history stuff of how they once existed. Would you agree people I mean that should make you sad to realize this.

    In the past, people have used elephants for war; I often wonder if that has anything to do with the number of elephants of today. I am actually curious if an elephants meat is capable of feeding people. Not only do humans kill elephants, for just their tusks, but we leave their meat behind without either using the meat to feed starving children, making us worse than lions, or giving it a proper burial. Humans can be considered the most savage creatures on earth since we invented war.

    If ivory farming were legal, where you could cut tusks off of animals without hurting them and sell it, the price might drop to the point where it's not worth the risk to poach. It's distasteful, but it might work.

    • @ChrissonatorOFL
      @ChrissonatorOFL 9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Curtis Densmore The only individual that needs the tusks is the elephant. So it should be illegal to dismember and/or kill them.

    • @CurtisDensmore1
      @CurtisDensmore1 9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yeah, I know that. I think buying and selling ivory is disgusting. Wouldn't it be nice if everyone felt that way and obeyed the law? I'm not here to argue, I'm offering a pragmatic solution. It IS illegal to hunt them, yet the population keeps dwindling. I'm saying that if we relieve some pressure on the market, things will calm down. Much like trying to enforce drug laws, the fact that it is illegal raises the price and thus the temptation to do it. So, bringing the price down might help. It might not, I don't know. What I do know is: 1) Elephants are headed for extinction while the ivory trade remains illegal, 2) The high price motivates people to poach when they might otherwise avoid it, 3) Increasing supply brings prices down, and 4) Farming animals gives them more inherent value, so people might want to keep them alive. You have to change something if you want different results. Good luck trying to convince people who buy and sell ivory to feel sorry for elephants.

    Here's what you do; since poaching is already illegal, you catch the perps in the act or track them down and you put them in the place of the poor elephant.

    Stop the use of HELICOPTERS in environmentally sensitive areas. That's how you stop the poachers. You need a license to fly one, right? No license if you cannot explain your flight time in these areas. It only takes a 15 minute flight to get in and kill a large animal, take its horn or tusks, and fly away. The penalty for poaching should be removal of all the poacher's teeth with no anesthesia, then they get to sit on death row caught in a wire snare and wonder whether or not today is the day they will be shot to death in front of their loved ones. Poverty is NO excuse. There are plenty of other ways to support a family.
    I get physically ill when I see a piano with ivory keys. There are so many other materials they can use to make those keys - glass, for instance. Being caught purchasing, trafficking and handling ivory should also be severely punishable. No slap on the wrist, if the purchaser is a rich person, hit them where it hurts financially, emotionally AND physically. Shame on humans. This make me very uncomfortable being part of the same race that could do this.

    The elephants lost their lives just like their ancestors existed the Mammoths and the Wooly mammoths And all the other elephant ancestors there will be repeated history Posters have done since humans have done it before with arrows and spears Humans are doing it with guns And needs raid is taken over just like what happens years ago where humans have meat trade after hunting elephants And we'll be mammoths the elephants that we hunted And this is why you see them in the museum and same could be said for the elephants if that happened If we don't do something so would you agree people.😔

    not a real solution. raise the punishment for killing them, decrease the punishment for taking their tusks. poachers will start tranquilizing instead of killing

    • @ChrissonatorOFL
      @ChrissonatorOFL 9 ปีที่แล้ว +12

      StevenGaspard The only individual that needs the tusks is the elephant. So it should be illegal to dismember and/or kill them.

    • @animallover5626
      @animallover5626 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      I agree with raising the punishment. Im order to make it not worth doing there needs to be high risk and they need to have less demand (worth less or less consumers.)

    • @animallover5626
      @animallover5626 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Decreasing the punishment for removing tusks without killing elephants could help. Sure they shouldn't be taking them at all but you're right that's better than them being killed. It's a step in the right direction at least.

    So if the elephants that are the wooly mammth's wind extinct so will the elephants This would be the same sad history like how the elephant's ancestor the wooly mammoths And how they became Now just legends And now only being heard of only This happened And saying could be said for the elephants In this way we can never see them anymore once they are extinct After seeing their tusk is being taken From them Is after being hunted by the humans and the ancient human ancestors have done Have you seen humans carrying tis carrying tusk from the elephants and the wooly mammoths the elephants that have been haunted too Extinction. And plus this is where we only be seeing elephants in the museum after they were finally extinct and Humans keep on hunting them Until Is the year 2024 Is of the elephants going exact in that year Just like how the elephant's ancestors went extinct 10000 years ago The wooly mammoths And I'm sorry to say this but that's more of a sad feeling Together when you think About this This means Goodbye Elephants. And us looking only at elephants in the museum Annoying about theirs or how they once existed most existed and now are extinct in a year today in the 2024. This and that means They will be just legends being Heard just like how They existed and now hunted to Extension Just like how the wooly mammoth The elephants that was Heard of before. Would you agree people Or not.😞

    • @lanna8365
      @lanna8365 ปีที่แล้ว

      No. The difference is a looong time ago when humans hunted wooly mammoths, that was a way or survival. That was natural and what was needed. Killing these elphants now are not a need for survival, but a cruel, cruel, want. Humans are killing off an entire species just so that they can sell the ivory for money. It's disturbing and saddening to see the extents people will go for money. It is ILLEGAL to kill these elephants, but poachers still do it. And it's not just elphants. Tons of animals, plants, and more are becoming extint. The ecosystem is being disrupted in a negative way, the earth is becoming polluted, and nature is being harmed, all because of us humans.

      No! Philippines do have elephants but its insignificant compared to others but from what I've read, the role Philippines play is that they do import (and smuggle) large ivory figurines carved with religious icons.

    Unfortunately, were on the fast track to lose elephants completely within less than 10 years time. It's already too late, were too late to save white Rhinos and those are hanging on by a mere thread, 3 left to be precise.
    The elephants are next, with the rate of poaching, and how fast they are killed id say we're going to lose them a lot faster than 10 years time.
