  • DISCLAIMER: I know there will be those of you out there that will have problems with my set up for casting platinum and that’s fine. This is what works for me and the space I have available in my shop. I’ve been casting platinum for three decades and have never lit anything on fire because I have a healthy respect for the torch. That being said, even I can have an off moment (Ex: See the crack in my window…I wasn’t paying attention to the heat rising & it cracked the glass a while back) so, please, safety first when casting!
In this video I demonstrate how I cast platinum with a Torit Casting Machine.
As I state in the video, I’m running about 75lbs of hydrogen and about 50lbs of oxygen to get the volume I need.
For my lost wax casting, I use Doc’s investment. I pull my invested mold out of the kiln at 1000 degrees F. This is after an 8 hour burn out reaching 1350 degrees F.
My crucibles are from American Jewelry Supply (ajstools.com). The current crucible already has over 30 throws on it and is still doing fine.
Please note: I have proper ventilation and eye protection. I have a window & a door open plus a ventilation fan running (you can hear it in the video). I’ve attached a plate I purchased from a welding supply house to an Optivisor for eye protection. I use fire & heat resistant gloves to handle my mold. Using these, I can hold the mold for a short amount of time.
You’ll see an edit a few seconds into me working with the torch. I underestimated the loudness of the torch. You couldn’t hear me talking over it, so I edited out the small bit with me talking.
If you have any questions, please feel free to ask!
And of course, please check out my soldering clamp (not in this video) here: www.the-clamp.com

All fixed. Thanks for your comment. I now have a wall that has stainless steel sheeting on it and a countertop that is stainless steel. I also have a large exhaust fan at my casting station. Thanks again for your observation.

letting it sit for 1 hour is that to stop platinum from been brittle? sometimes I get little cracks on the shank towards the bottom .

What is your torch setup? It looks like a typical acetylene tip, but I assume you are using flashback arrestors and/or check valves + compressed hydrogen gas tank; is this correct?

Can you tell me what basic steps you took to go from rough casting to polished? Was tumbling involved?

good day! I castedd few times platinum 950 cobalt 50. But out of 5 castings, my metal was very brittle and broke in my hands. I only managed to cast well once.
I took the dental mass, preheated the flask to 900 degrees Celsius, then lowered the temperature to 300 degrees Celsius.Cast on a centrifugal horizontal casting machine. Burning with propane-butane and oxygen. After casting left for 8 hours to reach.
Please tell me what I did wrong?

      ditch the cobalt. use iridium.

@@peters5903 Thanks for advise but with iridium alloy is too soft for me.
now i use ligature with indium gallium and copper. this alloy casts well and has a very good hardness (160Pv)

It is great! May ask you. What kind of allow do you prefer for platinum casting? I am just started my casting practice and got some problem. I am using Oxygen Hydrogen Generator for melting and get success with casting....but the mold appeared full of cracks ... End it comes again and again. One time I got success with good mold. But I can't reproduce it, and also ai can't recognize what I am doing wrong. I will be very appreciated for any advice. Sorry for my English I'm from Russia.

Please list everything you are doing in detail including type of investment and how you are mixing it. This is just the start.

Why do you cast the ring and the head separate?

Thank you! And, I cast them separately because it makes clean up much easier.

As a Glassblower…Very unsafe setup. Your ventilation is very weak for the torches you’re using. And you should setup a flame resistant medium around that window such as Hardibacker.
