    Because of your blog article I bought the domke bag for my switzerland trip recently - I could see the outline of my rolls on one of the CT scanners in Doha but buying the bag meant no more asking hand checks! before buying this bag for years I’d get my poor film rolls scanned and I’d notice the shadows looking off and grainy. Good tip about overexposing because I do the same too. Glad you wrote the article but watching the video gave me some peace. Now waiting for my first two rolls of film to be developed 😅 thanks for sharing!

    Good I always overexpose my film 😀 went from Amsterdam to San Francisco and back recently, film was CT scanned and it looked fine when developed back home… but yes, I tend to give it plenty of light. great and informative video!

      Gracias Jan! Absolutely agree! To be honest we were shocked on how much of a difference the exposure plays into the result against the CT scan! Thanks for sharing your experience as always! We should do a video together someday ;)

    Thanks so much for doing this. There is way too much misinformation out there so it’s great to see real life tests. We’ve always been able to get easy hand checks here in Australia. But the past year that has changed and I’ve been forced to put my film through the X-ray which was scary. I shoot Portra 400 always at +2 so that’s probably why I’ve never seen any issues with grain in the shadows as you mentioned.
    Next up for testing is multiple X-ray tests to simulate an overseas holiday. Just getting to NYC is like a 3-4 X-ray trip from Australia before you even start shooting. I recently took 30 rolls for a holiday in Asia and was able to get hand checks the whole way but it was so stressful having to have a discussion at every single security point.

    • @carmencitafilmlab_
      @carmencitafilmlab_  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Indeed that would be a great test! As far as we know, for the regular scanners it's totally fine even if you run them several times. That's why this new change is so scary!
      Handchecks are a pain, consider getting a domke bag, there is even a large size. Worth every penny in our opinion :)

    Based on personal experience I never had an issue with airport xrays. Sometimes they agree not to scan it, sometimes they insist to pass it through. Can’t do much about it 🤷🏻‍♂️
    I think the higher the iso, the more damage it does.
    But here’s the thing, when you order film through B&H it passes through multiple xrays to be finally delivered to your address. When I submit film to GPP in Dubai so that they can send it to you guys in Spain, it again passes through multiple xrays when shipping. At the end, to my surprise all is fine.

    I've been doing lots of traveling and testing film going through x-rays (even in checked luggage) but I still haven't seen a CT scanner. But so far the only time I've been sure something was x-ray damage was after sending P3200 through 19 x-rays... and even then it was not catastrophic.

    I always travel out of Amsterdam when going to Barcelona and I always ask for a hand check, which has never been a problem and try to develop all my films at Carmencita in Barna. I once took an unexposed Portra 160 film through the CT-scanners and it was fine after development.

    • @carmencitafilmlab_
      @carmencitafilmlab_  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Oh wow! That's interesting! We know there is many variables and we wish the scanner manufacturers were the ones to do these test; we asume with less ISO should be safer (and also we are pretty sure the BCN team did their best to fix any possible defects ;)

    • @whepper80
      @whepper80 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@carmencitafilmlab_ For sure! At least it's good to know that the scanners don't completely destroy the film. Last time the security guy at Amsterdam told me that up to 800 ISO was fine (which is clearly not true anymore), but also said they would hand check it. I once contacted customer support of Schiphol and they confirmed it was completely fine to ask for these hand checks. I take all the films out of their canisters and put them in a transparent bag.

    Many thanks for the video and the work you did to get it done. Domke is about to increase the production until the end of summer for sure. I do have an old "Hama Film-safe Super" bag that I think will work as well.

    Muchas gracias. En el principio del video no entendí español pero en 1:05 fue un milagro y ahora soy fluente 🤯.
    04:27 My worry would be that if they say no to a hand check after I show them the film they won't allow me to use the domke. I will use one now. Any chance you'd be willing to check slide film some day? I haven't seen that yet.

    • @carmencitafilmlab_
      @carmencitafilmlab_  ปีที่แล้ว

      Swinging between spanish & english is the story of our lives :)
      We believe most security personel will not be familiar with a domke bag and would not make sense to restrict you from putting the film back in. We are gonna start selling this bags soon at the shop since they are worth every penny with this new scanners!
      Slide film is between 2-4% of our total anual volume and unfortunately we no longer have it in stock, but we believe the effects would be similar or even worst 😱

    Hi so does the film look worse when it’s passed through CT scan unprocessed then shot after and developed? I passed my unshot super-8 films through the machine at Amsterdam bc the guard made me and now feeling super worried about them. Thanks so much!

  • @whepper80

    This December I used a Domke bag when going through Schiphol to fly to Barcelona, because I hoped this would be a quicker process than asking for a hand check. Unfortunately the CT-scanners didn't like my Domke bag (combined with electronics like an iPad) and thus they completely checked my backback and removed everything. They x-rayed my Domke bag again with another scanner. The guy from security told me the story again that all film up to 800 ISO is safe (it isn't), but also told me to remove the Domke bag & iPad and put it in a seperate basket (even if they told me this wasn't needed), as the CT scanner would reject it otherwise.

    The weirdest thing with airport scanners that happened to me was a huge color shift in the red layer and ask images looked at it they had thick fog in a portra 160 😮 that roll went twice through international flights

    Hi thank you for making this video, really helped me out! I bought the domke bag! Also flying from Amsterdam this week, but still a bit worried they’ll still want to check it again without the bag. How do they react to it?

    • @carmencitafilmlab_
      @carmencitafilmlab_  ปีที่แล้ว

      Nice! It's very very likely that they will stop the bag and manually check, that is totally fine! Just act cool 😎 and mention that is a lead protection bag for film and once they check by hand you can go easily!

    Would you mind sharing what you did to correct the picture of you in the yellow tshirt at 9:35? I have NLP v3.0 if that is useful...
    I had 10 rolls from my summer vacation, a mixture of gold 200 and pro image 100 and all the rolls are damaged, it would be really helpful to fix them to restore the memories. Thank you

  • @eckhardstrittmatter2511

    Great idea to get that checked! I think your approach does not work though. To have a proper comparison, you should buy 2 films of each in Amsterdam (!), shoot ideally the same scenes with two identical or similar cameras and then develop and scan one film in Amsterdam, while the other one goes undeveloped through the Xray and will be developped back home in your lab. Then you could compare the results. With your approach you are just guessing, if the film might have been affected - and to be honest I think it was a waste of time to watch this video ...

    • @eckhardstrittmatter2511
      @eckhardstrittmatter2511 ปีที่แล้ว

      ... and actually if I think it through, you should buy another film in Amsterdam, take it unexposed through the Xray back home and shoot this film and an identical film, that didnt go through the Xray in Valencia - to see if Xray has different effects on exposed and unexposed film. I would love so see the results - maybe you guys plan another trip to Amsterdam sometime ... :)

    Carmencita always stay curious. Love this very useful experiment. Always thinking ahead chapeau! Though in Spain (especially Galicia) I always had a trouble with hand check. The dudes are so bored all day, they tend to make big deal and fuzz out of it. They look at me like some Asian narco king 🥹

    Maybe this is going over the top… but my inner scientist wants to see a control film. How about revealing an virgin roll just to see the impact of the x-rays. No shots only x-ray exposure. 🤓
    Thanks for the video!! I’ll be shooting on ADOX film that went through BCN x-ray security… 🥸 so it’s nice to have the final tips and tricks.
