I feel like I'm enjoying random dynamic events way more than in modern meta maps, because almost all of them give progress to hearts, and you are encouraged to repeat them. I think this is how they were intended to work in core, but metas kind of made us forget that. Very cool!
Some of my favourite meta events was ogre war in fields of ruin, and Silverwastes - where whole thing was coherent chain of events that impacted state of whole thing, but it just happened continuously, with a reset state. Launch time HoT metas were similar to it with the difference of having two particular phases that were on the clock, but later "revamp" have changed them to basically world boss on timer with extra steps. And alot of newer metas are just that - a world boss with a really long series of pre-events attached. As for the events in Janthir - the events that do not contribute directly to any heart, give instead renown token, that with enough mastery in lowland kodan mastery tree can be traded for heart progress with heart vendors - so every event on those maps ultimately contribute to hearts, directly or indirectly.
Great point, it really affects the pacing of gameplay. GW2 combat also shines in those experiences with 2-4 players working together. For example: I saw somebody pulling all the animals next to turn-in box for one of the gather events. Nothing crazy, but I realized it's actually a pretty good time save if everyone only has to run the meat a couple feet. Now I do it every time, and I've seen other people pick up on the strategy. That's just one example, but in general, small events like that let you recognize and appreciate the players around you. You don't have to check arc dps - you can visually see people contributing, whether through their mechanics, power level, or strategy. The scaling is also tame enough that noobs and leeches don't drag you down like they can in the bigger metas.
So far, this expansion has been everything I want out of open world adventuring. Fantastic setting, beautiful music, jawdropping vistas, solid and varied gameplay with fun traversal, great voice acting and an interesting storyline.
Anyone else interacting with books and stuff in game but not reading into to deep because they are waiting for all the WP interactions and discussions?
Just a nice writing detail I noticed when you get your Homestead: Stoic Alder is somewhat secretive at first about why he neglected it, obviously because his bear-wife died. During his introduction, he explains strengths and shortcomings that he sees in his son, which he thinks the son got from him. He's quite careful not to mention the painful past. It's only after this topic has been brought up, because he has to explain why the homestead is useless to him, that Stoic Alder can confidently talk about his mate and the traits his son shares with his late mother.
I love this playthrough! It's really enjoyable to watch you figuring everything out for the first time and get the immediate and unedited reaction to it all.
I can't get lost in the GW2 story. The characters. the voices... I don't feel like i'm in another land or world. I feel like i'm in the real world still.
Idk if you noticed, but the wolves in janthir are new, at least visually. They seem to have a different model, and they have that furry texture that the new kodan and warclaw have when you look up close. I wonder if they'll be a new ranger pet in later updates, like how soto got 3 pets. Also, I like that the rivers actually have a current. It pushes you downstream if you sit still, and you swim faster with the current and slower against it. It doesn't work on the boats though.
I remember when SoTO launched you were very realistic on how ANet handled the new expansion model. You said that it may take them at least a couple to really fine tune the process. Things may change in the quarterly updates but my thoughts are that they knocked it out of the park. It reminds me a lot of launch gw2, with the exploration focus, but feels fresh at the same time. The story has been pretty good(though I haven't finished it yet). The sequence here with Stoic Alder and Pokey hit me pretty hard. The voice actors knocked it out of the park.
@@kyleclerc8099 Personally, I give it one more expac to really see what things will be like. They had already started on Janthir when SotO was in full-swing, so I’m hesitant to claim that *all* the feedback from SotO has been applied just yet.
34:25 The way you put it about the War claw “dying” makes me imagine a hard mode nuzlocked version of GW2 using ranger where if pets or mounts die they are gone for ever and can’t be used, like wise for yourself if killed or all pets are killed you essentially lose the challenge
The Prince was a book written to mock the Borgia family during the time he was writing. Machiavelli was imprisoned by Cesare Borgia and so he wrote a book which applauded and praised the cruel methodology for ruling. However, the book itself critiques the treatment of other individuals and points out the downside of each of the principles. Essentially, Machiavelli played to Cesare Borgia’s pride, ego, and arrogance to openly mock him in the public eye through his writing. It’s my favorite book!😊
Without spoiling anything I think you are going to really enjoy the first instance of chapter 5. One thing I do like is the new tiered hearts it feels like a very simple type of reputation system if they could retroactively make older hearts work in the same way perhaps one region a patch gets updated to the tiered system but perhaps I'm hoping for too much.
Random side note, while watching, at 53:34 you asked about race-specific dialogue and back when you first arrived at the village, the bear who led you in mentions something about sharing a love of nature like yourself and calls you a Seedling or something similar because you’re a Sylvari. Just a random thing I noticed.
OH MY GOD that was me who filmed themselves doing the choya dance! You said you'd give 400 gems to whoever sent you a video of dodgy choya dancing. I am genuinely amazed someone remembered that..
@@WoodenPotatoes Very sadly yes.. th-cam.com/video/7kQAkbXa9wY/w-d-xo.html You did ask for as awkward as possible! Must have been a live about 5 years ago?
Sorry to spam the comment section. Re: what happens with the rift event if you don't have SotO: you get an extra dialogue step where one of the NPCs goes (literally) "No heart of the obscure?", some extra dialogue and then the game gives you the ability on your toolbar. You get a notif saying you unlocked a new Mastery but nothing shows up in your H Mastery panel. However you are now able to hunt out/close rifts etc
I'm sad you are done with PvP. Game of the Day was (by far) my favorite content you ever made. I am also really excited for the new game mode. If it's good enough, I might even consider buying SotO or JW.
@woodenpotatoes Now that you have your Homestead, if you log out in the homestead, instead of going back to the main map, that character will appear in one of three locations around the homestead. So if you log everyone out there they will all appear in the homestead when you go there.
2:49:51 WP you should see The Prince as a critique of Cesare Borgia and other Italian rulers of the time but Machiavelli and the later publishers knew they would get into big trouble if they wrote it as an actual critique thus it is written in the form of a "guide" for a ruler. If I remember correctly that is the more modern consensus on the book.
Based on the comments (I haven't made my way through the story) someone should do a video of all the instances when WP oredicts which way the story's going
There has been more CC. This has been ever-increasing since EoD. Vanity sites like SC, MB, and HS are still WAY behind the curve where what matters for OW builds is numbers rather than situational utility. You get tokens if you do events that have no connection to any Heart.
51:20 Wait, hold on, the Kodan cub remarks on the sylvari right? So they've never seen one. It makes sense that the young ones have never seen a Sylvari before, but that doesn't mean that no lowland Kodan has ever seen one, right? Or am I forgetting other dialogue that confirms that they've never met one? As a side note, it's fun to hear your immediate thought process on mechanics that might not be clear yet, but will be after a bit of reading or playing. I had the same experiences as you when encountering those heart tokens, when sniffing the warclaw cub's scent, and when doing the mushroom event. It's fun to be able to just experiment, I think. I'd be interested to read the thoughts of a totally new player and if all those mechanics are understandable for them as well.
I have no urge to build , which has been a problem. It feels that is the only endgame content added by JW. And if you arent into that, you really dont have much new to do after the story.
If they can't make new playable races, I don't get why they don't just make a tonic or even outfit that just makes you a Kodan or Tengu or whatever. Would it be that hard to do?
1:37:44 oh i assure you, we absolutely can take our griffons for a swim (and underwater) 😂 The griffon guild is known for two things, flying in style and breaking the game 🙈
Did you know you can now mount up on your warclaw during combat? There's a cooldown if you do so you can't just spam it, but this makes it the only mount that allows this (helping it further fulfill it's own niche) Nevermind I just need to continue watching lmao
The skyscale has an ability to mount while in combat once every 3 min or so but it’s one of the last masteries and may need both the season 4 and Soto versions… I forget without looking it up. Though i do think the warclaw CD is lower
This is addition with the expansion, but I am unsure if it aplies only to warclaw - I think I managed to mount up still in combat into skyscale without using the SotO mastery jump thing (it was on cooldown at the time). May have been a bug tho.
For viewers, It's easier to turn the volume down than it is to turn it up. Unless you have an audio amplifier, the audio can only be turned up so much.
Good to see another person that likes the 100 fractal. Played it on release night and had a good time figuring out the mechanics. Also liked the CM version of it.
Totally wrong take on the race thing imo, WP, them trying to put in kodan as playable race in this expansion is proof to me that we will definitely get a new playable race soon, next expac or expac after that, its gonna happen within the next 2-3 years
The story so far is good, the maps are beautiful and engaging. However I can't stand interacting with Stoic Alder. Damn he puts me to sleep with his EXTREMELY slow rambling
