Thank you for the wonderful videos, Dr. Philip. However, I need more advanced Nvivo features. For instance, my dissertation involves interviewing participants on 4 occasions, how do I format my files, cases, and case classifications?
You're welcome Tyrone! You can create a variable (an attribute or classification) called 'Occasions'. You then assign values 1 to 4 to the transcripts depending when the interview happened.
Hello - I am unable to figure out how to drag and drop material from transcipts into codes I created. I am on a mac in version 14. Do you have step by step instructions or a video on this specific thing? Thanks!
Very good video I have a question when you classified clusters under each research question. The question is: How about if I am not sure with my research questions ? as I keep changing the questions between time and then. some people told me start analysing the data based on impressions, interests and important aspects that I think it is relevant to my research area.
Thank you! Great question! If not sure about the research questions, I would allow the purpose or objectives of the study to drive the analysis. In addition, you could code based on your impressions and interests and group them under 'other findings or other observations' if they are not helping you to directly meet the purpose of the study. However, in other to ensure transparency and credibility of the data analysis process, you need to show the criteria you use to decide the relevance of selected parts of the data. I think the relevance of an excerpt from the data should be based on the purpose of the study or research question but not what ones feels it is important.
Hello Dr, please I cannot export my data to excel on MacBook, I have done the coding (thanks to your videos), but it is only giving me 'word' option. I coded it under 'cases', could that be the problem? It is not even giving me the option to export into codebook. I will appreciate your guidance please thank you.
When you click on 'Codebook' to export, select .CSV as the format of the codebook (see: th-cam.com/video/zJNpGK3HBgI/w-d-xo.htmlsi=geZahgT2fsFLI0AC&t=74). If it doesn't work, it might be as a result of coding under cases.
Thanks for your wonderful video! May I ask you how to do an inter-coder comparison? Particullarly, I wonder if my coworker also needs to subscribe nvivo on her own computer to do that.
You're welcome! Based on my experience, your coworker needs to have access to NVivo and after coding, you can marge his/her project to yours and then contact the inter-coder comparison. I personally done this analysis before but this video may help: th-cam.com/video/ctiCXxRxMrI/w-d-xo.html
Thanks so much, Doc. This has really helped me as I am new in using Nvivo. However, I am lost in the part you said we are to repeat the clustering for all the research questions. So for example if my RQ1 has just two codes and during clustering both codes fall under one cluster is it okay? Secondly, will I use RQ2 codes for RQ1 clustering also or I am using each codes that fall under specific RQs for their respective clustering?
You're welcome! If your codes under your research question are not more than 4, you don't have to do the categorization process. In your case, you don't have to categorize your codes under RQ1 since you have only two codes. In effect the two codes then become themes addressing the RQ1. Concerning your second question, when categorizing codes under each of their research questions. For example, you only categorize codes under research question two to develop themes to address research question two.

Thanks. However, I'm confused as to how the interviews are linked to the participants? @@drphilipadu
