- This classic looper has been shocking riders for more than four decades. In fact, just about everyone around here who loves crazy inversions got their start riding Shock Wave, a double-looped 60 mile per hour steel roller coaster.
Once you haul up 116 feet in the sky, get ready to drop more than 100 feet on your way to blasting through Shock Wave’s masterpiece elements, the famous - and famously terrifying - back to back loops. One after another in an insane never-ending inversion, these two loops will deliver a stunning 5.9 Gs. That’s nearly astronaut level G-force.
And how are you going to be held in your seat during all this? Well, firstly, the forces of gravity will keep you nice and snug. Shock Wave is one of the only looping roller coasters to employ only a lap bar. That means you’ll feel free as a bird, or a rocket ship leaving the atmosphere, as you are hurled around this slick track.

Happy 45th Anniversary to Shock Wave at Six Flags Over Texas
Super underrated coaster! Happy birthday shockwave!
Super underrated
LONG LIVE the Shock Wave!
She's by FAR still the absolute BEST of ALL the steel-track looping roller coasters ever operated at Six Flags Over Texas, due to her 5.9 G-force level!
I wish the park would paint her in a different color scheme, though, such as metallic navy blue for the tracks and dark metallic gray for the struts that hold her aloft. The trains could remain white, but do a 2-tone layout (white/light-gray) with a dark blue pinstripe down the sides on train 1, with a dark gray pinstripe on train 2.
Another color scheme that would look nice on Shock Wave is dark forest green for the tracks and glittery gold for the struts, with each train's paint corresponding with the ride's color layout in a similar fashion (white/light-gray, with a green pinstripe on train 1 and a glitter-gold pinstripe on train 2).
Two of the most intense loops *anywhere* in the world! If they ever replace or update Shockwave, I hope the successor retains the potent combination of speed and inversions that made this such a daunting ride for so many decades!
Happy 45th ShockWave! Really enjoyed your video!
I remember riding this once before a competition during my middle school years. It was pretty fun!
Great ride for people trying to get over their fears
This brings back lots of fond memories of waiting in line for hours to ride the Shockwave in the hot Texas heat! Good times!
The back is the best. I recommend bracing yourself for the brakes at the end. I do and I've never hit my knees. It's a strong brake. Those loops knock you out and then the rest of the hills get pops of airtime. Awesome ride.
May she live to see 50 and beyond! Truly one of my favorite coasters I've ever been on, and how I first learned to love them way back at age 4.
Glad to see that sfot is active on yt again
Glad its back i love that ride!
The mid-course that squeaks hell😅, love this ride
45 years and not yet retired!
Scary!
Happy 45th late anniversary to my fav roller coaster
One time i ridden this like 3 times lol
I remember that ride being there when I was a child. I was probably about 8 years old when I first came across it. I ended up riding it when I was 16 or 17 years old. And it sounded pretty old like it could fall apart completely at any minute. It was my first and last time ever riding it. It is about to be 46 years old this month. It was built the same year that I was born.
Seats are a bit tight but it's worth it for the fun ride without too much wait.
Never been on shockwave before
Underrated
happy anniversary ❤
Such an important piece of coaster history
My first loop coaster. It was much better when it was brand new, and the track was white.
Ever since I went to six flags I feel motion sickness in vr before I never had a problem with it until now
If this ride had a DC character attached to it it would be way more popular
May not look intense, but those are circular loops and not tear drop shaped and they provide a good kick.
the first coaster i ever rode
Shockwave at six flags over Texas
Opened: 1978
Airtime machine
My dad lost his camera on this ride
The best ever, nothing a good classic.
Never like I’m riding
