    the madwoman in the attic, it says so much about society, about women, about slavery. I love this book, a superb Bildungsroman, I can always go back to..

    Thanks for your insight. Was one of my favourite novels growing up.
    Interesting to find out how interested the Bronte children were in illnesses.
    Mental illness was barely touched on or understood at that time - even up to very recently in the 20th Century. I know because I was a nurse in the 1970’s and have seen some progress, but not as much as you would hope.
