    This is super. I am about to redesign my front garden after a motorist crashed through my hedge and gate last weekend! I am looking at it as an opportunity rather than a disaster. This has fixed several ideas in my mind. Well done and thank you, as ever.

      Oh, my goodness, I hope the damage isn't too great. Someone crashed into ours once - the garden wall came off worse than the car. I hope you have fun redesigning the front garden, as you say, it is an opportunity.

    How welcoming! Love the torch lilies. I certainly believe in tip #11. Using pots is so convenient for changing the look quickly to be seasonal or just because we want to. We often start a plant in a pot to make sure it "takes." Once it is bigger we put it somewhere in our local landscape. Just did that with a Japanese maple tree. Now it is miniature roses. Before that it was Northern Sea Oats. Musical pots are so fun to do!

    Here's a poem I wrote about the online gardening community -
    Uk, here we grow,
    Where the year begins,
    Through wet and wind,
    But Charles Dowding,
    Will Never dig in.
    Neither will those northerners,
    The Deans, and the Tony's,
    In Newcastle, where it's always snowing,
    Bootz muddy, but never moaning,
    Further south, Nige, is slug patrolling.
    Here's spring, time for sowing
    Music, to sped up hoeing,
    Mike Hurdiss's plots, always showy,
    Border plan, got to be flowing.
    Middle-sized Gardens,
    Best to plan it,
    Who knew polishing trees,
    Could make this happen?
    Summer comes by,
    It's looking the best,
    So I took a welcomed rest,
    Ah, Allotment life,
    Ah! I hate you whitefly!
    Strawberries out my ears,
    Best sun in years,
    Picking daily, without fear,
    Then drought kills the lettuce.
    Pure tears...
    Into the autumn,
    Pumpkins I hoard them,
    Seeds, storing, leaves, pouring,
    I love the crunch and colours of autumn.
    As the cold draws in,
    Apples fall,
    Compost forks,
    But the greatest pleasure all year,
    Has been to hear,
    Lavender and Leek talk.
    By Sean (Plotting in Paradise)
    Thanks to all the contributors who have helped me this year :)

      @TheMiddlesizedGarden  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I think I would put a stand-out and perhaps quite tall plant in front of the bay window, and make it the central plant of the front garden. If it's a shrub or plant which grows to about 4-5ft you would see the flowers through the window, and it would also improve privacy. You could also choose a tall ornamental grass such as Stipa Gigantea or a shrub with interesting leaves, such as Cotinus.

    Great tips for the garden! I love using pots on our porch to fill in the area. One area I wonder about is the sides of the houses. I have a small garden on the side of the house where the drive way and garage are. I have plants but my wall is bare. I have been thinking to add plants that would vine up a trellis along that wall. The Middle-Sized Garden Oh no worries!!! I will watch when ever the video can be made. I’m at the moment figuring out how to keep my porch not looking bare with plants that will thrive in winter. So far I have my main containers and filling in with smaller pots to warm up. I’m working on a small budget. But so far i think it will keep me going through winter. If any one would like to share how to have a garden still in winter that would be greatly appreciated. Please Alexandra! could you share your ideas on how to eradicate unwanted and intrusive Muscari.
    I regard this bulb as a pernicious weed, although you may think otherwise

    • @TheMiddlesizedGarden
      @TheMiddlesizedGarden  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I do rather know what you mean. It has taken over in my front garden, and I pull it up. I wouldn't recommend weed killer products as they always drift onto other plants, but if you're able to lay cardboard over the area where the muscari are growing and then add garden compost or well rotted manure on top, it will keep the light away from the leaves, so they should die. It will also improve your soil. However, you'll have to do it when the muscari are in leaf and you may have to do it a couple of times. If that's not practical, then it's just a question of endlessly removing it until it finally gives up. Good luck!

    • @anneas8532
      @anneas8532 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@TheMiddlesizedGarden Hello Alexandra, Thank you so much for suggestions on how to say farewell to the unwanted Muscari. Unfortunately, The wretched bulbs are scattered here, there and everywhere.
      Digging them out works to a degree, however for every bulb you pull, there are clusters hiding around trees and shrub roots. So, I think I just have to continue pulling the leaves up while gritting my teeth.

    By studying your inspiring garden videos one question appeared. - What do you think about transfering the interior design to the garden design? For example : to plant the pattern of the couch fabric as a bed?

    • @TheMiddlesizedGarden
      @TheMiddlesizedGarden  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I think that sounds like a good idea. It's always harder to control what goes on in a garden (for example, fabric colours fade and plants don't always turn out the way you expect) but if you used it as 'inspiration' rather than trying to copy exactly, I think it would be lovely.

      Here's an interesting example. Between 1975 and 1989 I developed a beautiful front garden starting from a non-descript jungle of boring plants. People would stop as they walked down the street to admire the front garden. For sad reasons (divorce) I had to sell that house. The people who bought it (at auction) told the agent that they bought it because they really loved the front garden. A few years ago, I took my granddaughter past the house to show her where her mother was born. By that time, very little, perhaps none, of the once-beautiful front garden remained. The owner happened to see us peeking at the house from the road. When she found out that I was the previous owner, she confessed that she had bought the house because of the lovely front garden. She further confessed, sounding a little guilty, that unfortunately, she had been unable to maintain the garden and that nothing of it remained! Oh well, I still have my photos and memories! And I have a new beautiful front garden. :)

      @@neverlostforwords Unfortunately, in Australia, that is the trend. We had a glorious cottage garden when we lived on Phillip Island; years later friends who drove by and told us never go back and take a look as the garden was destroyed. It always amazes me when people buy a house because of its garden (particularly when there are plenty of other properties devoid of gardens) and then proceed to neglect and destroy it. We are in the process of selling our current property and know we will have difficulties due to the newly established garden which is a 'Habitat Stepping Stone' planted for birds, bees and butterflies. Sad statement on today's world.
