Love them both ..but not a good representation of VIRGIL.. the mix on Vs kit was weak ..usually his mix is Monster..Thomas's mix was great ..he hit harder..Vs plays with more finesse..but with that mix sounded weak ..Thomas got this.... Thomas is a monster, no doubt...but Virgil, for those who understand what he can do...well, I will just say that he is the most technically advanced drummer to ever live.
People who don't play drums look at Virgil Donati play and think "I would LOVE to play drums like THAT!!!" People who DO play drums look at Virgil Donati play and think "I'm going home to burn all my drums!!!"
This wasn’t a competition and both solos were trash for both guys. They are both waaaay better than this. This was just a fantasy for lang and I’m glad it happened but I could tell Virgil wasn’t in to it. It was more of an advertisement for DW than anything. But, if you were to base a narrow minded perspective of who “won” this made up competition, it would go to lang I guess. But again, IMO, a poor representation of both. Also…lol….now that I think about it, this is just a snippet of the whole show, and they both kill it in other sections.
I love mangini but he was in awe of lang at the modern drummer festival in 06" as we all were. And then Virgil is the GOAT so that tells you you how they all stack up. Just try to count to quarter note while virgil solos. It's not easy.
Sorry, this jam is nothing, Thomas knows how make a good impression but he’s empty, Virgil is real genius and you should listen to his music, and btw the balance is better on Thomas’s set. Virgil is the best ever!
Lang is an incredible drummer in many many ways, but he has n o t h i n g on Donati. He is a simpleton in comparison. The easiest way to know this is to watch the Dream Theater auditions.
@dcmastermindfirst9418 you simply have not listened to enough of Donati's playing. His 4 way independence is simply insane. Listen to Quantum Factor by Planet X for example. Peace ✌️

Thomas Lang is master of the drums!! Both he and Todd Sucherman are my favorites at this point!
Thomas Lang is absolute beast on drums, but Virgil Donati is the most advanced drummer ever walking on this earth.
Wrong Thomas has way more technical independence and far more creative and flexible playing. Literally ten step ahead of Virgil nobody.
