Lot of thought and work has gone into this.
Metal front wheel, four wheels, and gears would have seen this machine through to being a success.
Simpler electrics would also have helped with reliability.
In my view one of the best British inventions.
Older people should use these to ride in parks, where allowed, keep fit. No stability issues.

I am replacing the chassis on my C5, it is amazingly light!
They could have done more on stability, namly two wheels on the front.
also weather proofing along with better rear brake, digital brake isnot good.
I am upgrading the rear brake to disc break.
Height of better visibility...then it's perfect.
      Best British invention.

The Sinclair needed to be about 25% bigger and with a roof.

Battery, motor, electronics and body materials were not up to snuff back then. The ELF shows what can be done with technology now. High performance downhill racing mountain bike components, full DOT aproved LED lighting system and a powerful 9 pound lithium battery make these new designs better. Larger wheels and a solar roof bring it all together: th-cam.com/video/r_xDuHuk4_E/w-d-xo.html
British laws that limit these to 15 mph are ridiculous. That is one reason this never caught on.
I got rid of my car 3 years ago and use solar power to get around every day. The option of pedaling just makes this more desirable since everyone needs exercise.

Good video ! Thank you for sharing! Was it ok to drive only use pedal drive when battery is empty?

I was 14 when this came out and desperately wanted one after reading about it in a magazine. Of course, I just couldn’t persuade my parents to buy me one but, looking at it now, I think they definitely made the right decision.

Looked a bit iffy to me then, and still does. I'm sure that motor is a Polymotor Italia model, my mum's old Electra ( Philips ) washing machine had the same sort of thing, and it was a "permag" motor. But I don't expect they bothered to use the regenerative braking this would've offered ! Tinny spine welded up, bet that rotted nicely within, unnoticed, under all the plastic, like the Honda C50/70/90 motor scooter, and as did most cars then. Bring on the Waxoyl LOL.
Brakes on only two wheels ? Asking to go into a skew, in bad conditions. Surely a diff could've been provided ?

They really took this thing too seriously. They would've saved a lot of development costs if they considered this thing a toy, not a car.

Clive Sinclair was obsessed with personal transport. He was the same way about computers. When he realised that folks were just playing games on the computers he sold he was not that happy. That's why he came up with the QL. That was meant to be for serious users. When people worked out it was crap for games it just tanked. Sold so poorly that people attributed the financial collapse of Sinclair Computers to the QL failure. A lot of finance from SC went into the R&D of what became the C5. Sinclair went through personally a lot to get the C5 to market. To sell it as a toy would've sold like hot cakes but Sinclair would've been beside himself. The financial success of the product was almost irrelevant to him. He just wanted some serious products in the market and used by the best and the brightest. Always respected his passion and drive. A legend in many ways.
Unfortunately the C5 has aged badly from an aesthetic standpoint. I'd be keen to see if any of the C5 enthusiasts have improved the look and feel of the C5 today. Love that sort of thing.

@@gamesbloke The sad thing is that in 2005 some schmuck approached Lotus to build 1000 expensive electric toy cars. And now he's a billionaire.
What's wrong with C5 looks? Never seen it in person, but on screen the design seems very nice and timeless. The only way to "improve" it is introducing other colors.
QL fell a victim of several architectural mistakes. The system could be competitive, if they went for proper 68k instead of 8-bit 68008. Dreaded Microdrives could be later swapped for floppies, like Amstrad had done with +3.
I'd say QL could become a low-end Atari ST alternative, the same way as Speccy held it's ground against C64.

@gamesbloke You hit the nail on the head. I admire Sir Clive Sinclair. I owned various recumbent bikes two and three wheel. I missed out on a C5 unused and still in packaging.
I was given a SameBike Lo26 iv been constantly tweeking to get the most from a 10Amp hr battery 48v 500w I upped range on a mix of hills and steady inclines from 12miles up to 30mils. Tyres make a huge difference to rolling resistance.
I have seen trice recumbents with hub motors I prefer hub as they are simpler more durable than say the Bosch pedal mounted motors. I own both. The bosch uses Pedal RPM cadence as well as gear selected and wheel speed. Where as the Hub motor has non an all or nothing dim witted set up. A breaker wheel with magnets on the bottom bracket crank sensor setup. If you move it will go to set speed but can be overridden by brake application.
The Cube bosch is legal 15mph 250w I'm impressed with the motor gear box but have had reliability issues sensor fault codes display needs a separate 2025 cell battery. Whereas the Sambike Naughty 500w 48v 10amp h hub I have had little fault even being Chinese. I was impressed. The 250w version a guy in Ireland last time I saw on TH-cam covered 15k miles on his.
Anyway I'd love to get my hands on a C5 and do a redesign. Styling has aged but I'd have twin wheel and single rear for simplicity of rear axel and it would be single arm wheel removal type.
