    You should do more videos on Martins! He’s one of the best, if not the best current active strongmen today. And he’s very technical with all his lifts: I think you boys would have LOADS to talk about. He also has a great admiration for Olympic weightlifting. You should also collaborate with him if possible! That would be a dream!

    I"m built similarly but am lucky enough to have to mobility that I can grip the bar narrowly. Back squatting has always been this frustrating movement because I've been able to overcome my leverage disadvantages on almost everything else even front squats oddly enough.

    I have similar proportions. Squatting has always been a struggle for me for years. The deadlift always came much more naturally to me and unsurprisingly I have a MUCH stronger deadlift than squat. All these years been battling with hip flexor/groin pain from squatting of all styles too that I haven't been able to get to the bottom of. I also had the misfortune of falling into Starting Strength and the Rippetoe style low bar squat for a long time. More recently, I've been squatting high bar/hybrid and it's been going better. High bar with a lower bar placement, right on that meaty shelf of the traps, just below the C7 vertebra. Flat shoes (I ditched my weightlifting shoes I had been using for years). Pretty wide stance, shoulder width or greater. Toes pointed out. Just trying to squat in a way that feels natural. Not exaggerating anything like forward knee travel or uprightness, or conversely, forward torso lean with minimal knee flexion like Starting Strength prescribes.

    It's so common to have this body type in the Baltics. Licis is Latvian, I'm Estonian. I'm in the same boat with 170kg backsquat and 225kg deadlift. Armspan 185cm, height 180cm.

      I started lifting 2 years ago, within a few months I could deadlift 425lb and squat only 175lb. Long legs, long arms, short torso. Leverages matter a ton.

    • @olindblo
      @olindblo ปีที่แล้ว

      I’m the same with similar numbers, and from Finland (with probs some Baltic ancestry). I have a similar body type; the only difference is that I have short arms despite having long legs.

    • @MinhVu-ef8qh
      @MinhVu-ef8qh ปีที่แล้ว

      Same. Long limbs short torso crew checking in. After a few years of training I can only squat 170kg but can conventional deadlift 270kg. Deadlift always feels very natural and comfortable for me. Leverage matters a lot. Now that I'm doing weightlifting it's even harder because the sport favours people who squat well.

    MARTIIIINS!... has a beautiful squat. Saying "this guy is NOT built for squats" is unfair, you just need to find the right leverages and angles for that person.
    I'd say strongmen are absolute monsters in static strength, and Martin's body type doesn't stand out in that group as "different" 🐉
    EDIT: Thanks for the video!

      I can't maintain my center of balance when I'm barefoot, nor hit depth. The squat shoes get me into a more upright position, at least.

      Im in the same boat as you and Martins. (6’4” and about 105 kilos with a 170kg max right now)
      I always hated squatting and one day just made a commitment to get it sorted.
      I go hybrid bar position and slightly wider stance with Oly shoes. Can go ATG comfortably in this position.
      The secret for me was increasing submax volume and just practicing the movement - a lot. I did almost a whole year squatting 3x a week.
      I also really focused on working hip mobility and supplemental pause work to really get comfortable in the hole position.
      Just what worked for me. Maybe
      this gives you some ideas.

    The French powerlifter you show with his "aggressive low bar" squat has to change his technique because he was getting red lights for "too much forward lean in the standing position". So he put it higher but it's still quiet low in my standards

    I am 183 cm long legs compared to upper body. My thing that has been driving me absolutely insane is squat width! Feet position. Really close stance feels best for my hips but it creates a looong range of motion even before reaching parallel and the ankle mobility can't handle it. And yes, been working on them alot.
    Hipwidth stance turns off my glutes and tightness. Plus my hips hit a dead stop very high up. I have worked them too, feets outwards, forward and everything inbetween.
    The smoothest I have found is a bit wider than shoulders, feets outward, I don't know, like 45 degrees or so. I can reach aproximitely paralell this way without hip impinchment at the bottom, my knees don't have to travel so far and ankle mobility is fine. I look like a frog though and doesn't feel that great power as in close stance. It's also hard to create tension and stiffness this way. Knees feels loose and I can feel the knees won't be happy if I went this route. I don't know. Maybe there is some fix for that too.
    Anyways. I have no freakin clue what to go with. I stretch and stretch, switch squatstyles once one or the other starting to create problems. Over and over I get these "AHA" moments through the years but then weeks, or months later, problems arise. Sigh. I'm starting to feel done after all these years. And all the contradictory vids out there just confuses and put more doubts in me. No jab intended at Sika Strength.

      @@memorycard1000 keep the wide Stance , work on your hip mobility and then Turn your feet more outwards . I wouldnt turn them more than 45 degrees or you will loose Balance. If you are already doing that and still cant squat deep you are probably limited by hip mobility. You probably wont hit atg right away. Give it 6 months and im sure you will be able to. Maybe look into weightlfting shoes, they help tremendously. Youll probably loose a ton of Power out of the hole by doing that because you basically take put your whole hip by doing that which is a important part for squatting strength with long limbed lifters. Make sure you hammer your quad acsessories because of that(hacksquat splitsquats leg extensions) because only squatting wont ne enough for your leverages to adequatly strengthen your quads. And most important of all, it takes time. Time to Progress your rom in itsself and time to make your squat strong again in said rom. And youll have to live with limiting your squat strength wise. It will be hard at first but get better over time

    Am I blind to biomechanics or is it everytime "long legged lifters" are brought up, including the Nino video, they're just tall, or have long tibia but not femurs? There are of course plenty of great squatters with long femurs, just not the "aesthetic" that most people look for ideally/they do lowbar

    • @decl5439
      @decl5439 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Agreed he seems to have relatively average proportions, most people do not have the upright squat proportions most weightlifters have. The person on the left at 0:35 seems to be a much better example of poor squat leverages not Martins.
