big tip buy parts that are likely to break now like handles, locks, latches, gaskets, seals, and rollers they will be way cheaper now and easy to get. Store them long term in a house repairs kit as a small broken item later can cause a major replacement for way more money a few years down the road.
I work for a large window and door manufacturer here in Australia, we can supply parts for doors and windows we made over 40 years ago. This is one part of the value for money proposition when you look at the purchase price of things, that most people don't seem to grasp. There are many suppliers that can supply a cheaper option, when the rollers in your Chinese import are worn out in less than a decade and the only option is complete replacement, this becomes the most expensive option. As an example for less than $20 your 30 year old window will slide like the day it was installed if you had paid for Australian made in the first place. Maybe 20% difference and you got a window that can't buy parts for, odd kind of value.
If my handle breaks I'd just replace it same with all the lil wear and tear paets that most likely won't break with normal WD40 periodically. But I get your concept. Most people now a days don't know how to change a tire lol
So glad I found you! You are clear in your speaking, give clear directions, and you also tell the choices and options that need to be decided. Which I didn't even think about! 🤣 Thank you for your help my confidence just grew! ✌️
My husband is the one who does all the house fixing projects but has little knowledge or experience doing some things. I want to learn how to do things around our house too, but correctly. I am interested in doing diy projects for myself. I learned something new in this video today, I did not know about the bottom bolt to adjust the wheel setting, so I tried it and it worked!! I am excited to show my husband when he returns home how I fixed the problem on my own...Yay! We have had issues with our sliding glass door dragging and making it difficult to open so instead we just don't use it anymore. Thank you
Nice job. I feel the exact opposite about sliding doors and having the option would NEVER have them again. I have properly installed French doors and have never had a problem opening and closing them and don't even have an overhang like you have. I've had these since our huge house remodel in 2008 and absolutely love them.
I agree sliding doors of this kind suck, they are ergonomically hard to use often the latches are very close to the door jamb, they wear out quickly especially in dusty environments and if you dont/forget to maintain the rollers on a ongoing basis they often destroy the surface they roll on then they become very difficult to move. Especially for older people these style of door become very heavy for them. Not to mention you just decreased your door width by over half... and they are a nightmare to seal air tight(near impossible with brush style seals) Dont get me wrong buying a good quality unit and have it installed properly and maintain them they are ok for an occasional use door, but I'd never install one at a main egress point.
@@st170ish All this will depend on the quality of the sliding door, many of the higher end ones eliminate any of these issues from being able to form. Usually when looking at a sliding glass door I start at $1800 per unit and go up from there. Something in the $700 range will be a sliding hunk of junk riddled with issues.
@@travisedwards9983 Yes definitely a highend unit is probably a lot better but you still can't seal them well and need ongoing maintenance... a thing most home owners nowadays don't do because there's no app to do it for them!
They are as deep as French doors, they both have a standard 4 9/16 jamb. You just need to remove the nail fin because this is a pocket replacement, not a new construction, so without a nail fin you can bring it all the way in flush with the interior wall board. In some cases an old door was installed the way she did it and tile was put in the floor against it and in this case you’d have to put a 3/4 PVC plank on the floor to set the door on to raise it so that you can bring it in flush. This door looks great though and she did an AMAZING job. I have pictures of thousands of doors installed if anyone needs any further tips or pictures for a better understanding just let me know, following her video will work out great for you though and look great too, just saying you don’t have to have that fir strip on the floor and all the extra trim.
thank you so much! i paid someone a LOT of money to fix my french doors & they managed to be worse than before. on my way to lowe’s now to replace them myself ❤
Thanks so very much !!!! This Video was so informative, and loved how you displayed and showed every product used and why??? This project has been a big “PUT OFF AND PROCRASTINATING TASK” FOR THE sole reason of being scared and not knowing the complexity. April.. Thank you for showing us how to install a sliding door. My dad needs to do some finishing touches on a sliding door project. I'll make sure to show him this video. Have a great day!
installing new sliding doors is always good, but I want to share with you my experience, I live in Orlando Florida, I contacted the Masterslide company with the problem of my sliding doors (if you ask, I will share the contacts) they replaced the rollers, installed a track cover and a new handle with a lock. Now my door is like new and I'm as happy as a child! And most importantly, I thought that I saved more than two thousand dollars! Just because repairs are cheaper!))) so think before ordering new ones. This is not advertising, this is my case.
April I only started watching you over about the past year but really enjoy your videos. You’re very down to earth with your explanations and give clear and concise directions. Keep up the great work.
just came across your channel from one of the other wood working channels I follow, don't know how your channel didn't pop up when I first started looking for these type of wood working diy type videos, but ANYWAY, this video is awesome, make me feel like I can remove the sliding door in my house and install the new one I have sitting in the garage. Also I didn't know you could choose the opening side like that. That is very helpful to know for the way my house is laid out. as right now, it opens right to left, but I want to make the new one open the other way. - a very happy new subscriber
This was VERY helpful! I was going back and forth on which one I should go with. I didn't know that about French doors. Now I'll for sure be going with sliding. Thanks April!!
So I just installed a whole sliding glass door this week. I never touched a single house beam in my life. To have done this has me feeling like a total she-ro rn. Thanks lady!
Just FYI, if the mechanism breaks in the blinds the insulated glass unit can be replaced with one with new blinds in it, you wouldn’t need to replace the whole door, and when you call out your sliding direction it’s always, always, always, from the outside looking in, so this door is actually left to right or in window terms an XO. I’m a window/door guy, lol. Nice job, it looks pretty good for a Lowe’s special. Also if you wanted to keep the swing doors and go with a pair of vinyl or fiberglass doors that are out swing they actually will seal very nicely as long as they’re installed properly and of good quality, wood doors suck because they swell and require lots of maintenance that fiberglass and vinyl doors don’t.
Once I get the French doors I want, I will NEVER have a sliding glass door again so it surprises me that you prefer it. For me, it's probably because I live in coastal NC so sand is the thing. It gets in the track and ultimately ended up ruining the whole purpose of having a sliding glass door. I also don't like that I can't open both sides when the weather is nice and I have a screen cover. I am going to go for a french door that has a left door that locks top and side and then a free to open and close door that locks. Thank you for the great video as always. :)
Nicely done. I had the exact same adventure with my back doors a few years ago. (Sadly it was before I started my TH-cam channel.) But my french doors were letting in all kinds of weather and moisture. I also had no flashing tape which I fixed with the sliding door install. This video brought back all kinds of memories.
Thank you I’m tackling this alone!! Yesterday I got out my ugly ancient window and door! 🎉 next up flashing!! Excellent tutorial here is helping give me confidence! May I ask what brand doors you chose and if they’re holding up for you?
Awesome explanation, you break down a mysterious process and show it's actually not that difficult. I'm curious where is a good place to buy sliders if you plan to DIY install them as you did in this video.
The French door looks pretty good, maybe just needed some minor adjustments. Installed couple of them by myself, had to remove the doors and install just the frame first, too heavy for me. No problems, one was not protected, completely exposed to the weather. If I had to do it over, sliding patio doors. Reason is the French door swigs, swing in takes out some interior movement/space, swing out needs a landing.
Hello, could you explain the measuring process for replacing sliding doors. I’ve watched about 5 different videos and I’m still not certain about how to measure.
Thank you so incredibly much!!! It is definitely on our to do list and this made me so much more confident to tackle this issue since our old doors are rotting.
Awwww shiiiiit, I grew up with a HEAVY sliding glass door, no adjustments and I had to take it off the track many times, to get back in the house 🤣🤣🤣 and what about adults who like to play with the blinds 🤔 lol im hoping to cut a hole into my double wide and install a sliding door. That ought to go well 🥴😅 im in Texas, if you might get down my way! Haha! Great work, as usual ❤
You did make it look “easier” . Everything fell into place just right. Looks great and I like the integrated blind option. Thanks for sharing the project.
HI April !! Love your work...you are so cool! Hey I a house with OLD custom sliders that I would like to replace with non-custom sized doors---any advice on how to close in the space to accomodate "regurlar" sized sliding doors?
You need to do a video on "Tool Time" I was just watching ABC News and see they are making a reality show base on the sitcom and you are in it. I am excited to see that.
April do you know if there is a sliding door made which will also operate like French doors so that you could still have a 6' opening for bringing in large pieces? It seems like there would be one that both panels would swing open for that purpose. I've never seen one though. I've thought about replacing my French doors with a slider but that would be an issue for me.
my screws are in flange on the outside of the door what is the brand door you used .My rollers are gone again and warped the track this time that to rollers glided on .Not sure why they did that but the did .The roller were only 3 years old and I have replaced them already 2 times since the house was new .does you door also have a pocket on the outside for a screen door .I got my screen doors from a outlet and they were only 5 dollars a piece and I love how sturdy the new ones are compared to the old ones .I have sliders in my bedroom and morning room .The bedroom ones are fine but morning room not so good
If you don’t mind me asking, how high is the threshold? We had a sliding door installed today and have noticed it feels like a trip hazard (after the previous sliding door had such a low threshold). I’m not sure if it’s just something to adjust to or if it was an error on installation.
@@derschwartzadder One good kick will open any inward-opening swinging door. French doors are one of the easiest to breach . With regard to sliding doors, the sliding panel should always be the inside, making lift-out much more difficult. Also, a couple of screws in the upper track of the sliding panel will limit upward movement, preventing lift-out, and can be easily removed for maintenance.
How do you know what size door to order before you remove the old door and are able to take precise measurements? Then you have to wait 2 months with an opening to get your new door made. Alternatively, you take a big risk on the new door not fitting properly.
I am getting water (i think) Through the the poorch doors and going into the basemenet ... flooding the ceiling and cracking the basement ceiling... nobody can find any leaks anywhere in the basement which makes me think that there is something wrong with the flashing. can you have some advice? this condo / building was built in 1976...maybe they didnt have flashing back then?
You know what Home Depot wants for a cheap steel door? Found one which s 236.00 but to hire a installer they charge 600 bucks and up !!! Can you believe that?? Lady A W you have many many career options.. Just Stay Well, Be Safe... Working on all your projects keeps you in shape.. Safe happy day...
Could do a video on how to secure you sliding doors from breaking and entering. The glass on them need additional stuff to make them better for security.
I feel like the issue with the double doors sticking wasn't so much the doors, as water getting in behind some part of the opening when it rains. The new flashing and caulking likely took care of the issue, whatever door would have gone back in. It is possible there's another leak somewhere causing that movement in the opening. Sliding doors are more forgiving of this, since a swelling floor will simply push it up into the bit of slack space in the upper track, and it would be unlikely to move so much as to 'top out'. If water is getting in somewhere, the amount of movement, plus other water damage issues, will only get worse over time until it's corrected.
Wow this is an Amazing Recommendation from TH-cam, Now Subscribed. Have to watch previous projects & Future projects,Can not wait. How Nice to witness & see a Wonderful Sight.Love watching this over Again Wow Beautiful. What a Blessing. The work on the door replacement is not to bad either.
Can someone please tell me if the sliding door she used is a left or right sliding door? Is it based from standing facing the door indoors or facing the door outside?
You do great work. I love watching your videos and plan on using some of you work shop ideas. Sliding doors as you installed have a better security about them than the others you had. Great Job!
Where you are, is the weather nice enough to leave the door open for periods of time? If so, you could have extended the slider to a triple slider, and possibly even disappearing sliders, where they either fold or open and are hidden behind a wall. Well done and surprised how easy it looked. I would have bet the mortgage that it would have been way more difficult. Thanks for sharing
So I have a slider now and it sucks. It's definitely original. I want to replace it and I wanted to do French. But if sliding really that much more reliable?
Just what I needed to see! It’s always cool to see what you’re doing next and also get a chance to see that beautiful smile of yours❤️ Thanks for sharing💯

Agreed, This is likely a regional thing. In cold climates you find out how much better seal you have with doors over a slider.
Her issues could have been due to not having the flashing at the bottom, thus causing the wood, and subsequent door to swell and not work properly.

If you don’t mind me asking, how high is the threshold? We had a sliding door installed today and have noticed it feels like a trip hazard (after the previous sliding door had such a low threshold). I’m not sure if it’s just something to adjust to or if it was an error on installation.
How long did the steps take? Generally so that is, provided you have the parts all there.

Sliders can be lifted out do their tracks SUPER easily, and are made of glass. Properly fitted wooden doors would be more secure.

Plus lots of air so in the winter is very cold inside the apartment - you can't get close to these doors is very bad.... spending lots of heat and $$$
So in US you buy a door from a shop and you have to pay extra for instalation, or you do it your self ???

I feel like the issue with the double doors sticking wasn't so much the doors, as water getting in behind some part of the opening when it rains. The new flashing and caulking likely took care of the issue, whatever door would have gone back in. It is possible there's another leak somewhere causing that movement in the opening. Sliding doors are more forgiving of this, since a swelling floor will simply push it up into the bit of slack space in the upper track, and it would be unlikely to move so much as to 'top out'. If water is getting in somewhere, the amount of movement, plus other water damage issues, will only get worse over time until it's corrected.
There's really no fixing is once moisture starts getting into them, making them swell.
CONGRATULATIONS, April on being on the show with Tim Allen and Richard Karn. I can't think of a better person to be on the show with them.
Wow, great info and it helps ease the stress of a couple install projects on my places, big thanks April!! :D

I watch many of your videos, always well done and informative. Want brand sliding door did you install?
The tag on the door said Relia-built
Admire you building skill. Do you have an episode where you change a small window to a much larger window from the big bow store. HELP
Can someone please tell me if the sliding door she used is a left or right sliding door? Is it based from standing facing the door indoors or facing the door outside?
Was that a finish nailer?
Yay! Go April! Its been a minute aince Ive checked in lol
Love your videos from Australia 🤩
Thanks! Exactly what I was looking for and needed. Great help!
Thank you, Bet video yet on installing this type of door.
You do great work. I love watching your videos and plan on using some of you work shop ideas. Sliding doors as you installed have a better security about them than the others you had. Great Job!
Thank for this video! I'm a single mom wanting to switch out my sliding door to open on the other side.
Awesome! Glad you found it useful. Thanks for watching.
Awesome work April! 😃👍🏻👊🏻 ... Thanks for all of the installation tips!
Nice and congrats on your new show!
Sliding doors have weep holes. You should be laying caulk beads along the flashing at the bottom as well as on the bottom nail fin
Audio is off but great video. I’ve been following since the beginning.
Just what I needed to see! It’s always cool to see what you’re doing next and also get a chance to see that beautiful smile of yours❤️ Thanks for sharing💯
In my area most people take out the glass silders and put in the double french doors.
Awesome work, April! 😊
Stay safe there with your family! 🖖😊
Where can I order a sliding door online? Where can I buy one overseas 😭?
How do you fix the doors if the do not seal together when the door close and locked
