  • In 2024, after finding a love for running I have dedicated the year to helping others achieve their fitness goals through coaching, pacing, and crewing. Every month I will go on another adventure to help those who need an extra push.
    This month I traveled to Jax Beach Florida to run in the Donna Marathon. This was my 16th marathon but the first one I have ever ran with someone. This was an experience that I will remember for the rest of my life. My podcast co host and best friend ‪@jjbuckner‬ decided a few months back that he wanted to run his first marathon. He chose the race and I told him I would be there.
    We put in 12 weeks of training during this time. He worked so hard and is an example of what consistent training can do. JJ built from zero miles and a knee injury up to peak weeks of 32 miles before getting to the start line. His longest run was 17 miles.
    His training was focused on Low Heart Rate Zone 2 training and followed many of the principles in MAF training. This training can be very frustrating for a new running. It is slow and often feels like you are not doing enough. Generally, we want run fast. JJ trained 2 minutes slower per mile than we ran on race day. Some will say it sounds far fetched to train at 13:30 pace with a peak of 17 miles and then blast out a marathon at 11:10 pace. JJ is amazing evidence of what hard work will provide.
    On race day we followed a strict run walk run regiment made popular by Jeff Galloway. From the start we jogged 1 min and then walked 30 seconds. We did this literally from mile one to mile 26. There were many times during the race that JJ wanted to go faster and needed to be held back a little bit, but we made a great team and stayed focused on the goal at hand. It came down to the wire! Thanks so much for watching!
    In June 2022 I was 240 pounds and losing the battle to alcoholism. After finding a joy for running again I decided to turn my life around. Since then I have continued my running journey, finishing a few ultramarathons and dreaming big. This video is a part of that journey. Here we will review products that we try and recap races that we do.

    JJ, congrats on the sub 5. Brad, my 22 year old daughter and I (age 55) also ran our first marathon on Sunday at Donna. My goal was sub 5:30 and I got 5:29:41 (bib 281). Cool to see the footage again. Funny how lonely the race seemed during the second loop after all the 1/2 marathoners finished and most of residents went inside when it started to rain (I don’t blame them). The rain and wind were brutal at the end but you were correct, we were lucky for most of the race, and at least it wasn’t too cold. Great commentary and video!

      Oh yeah!! Congrats. We noticed the same thing on the second loop. Good thing we hooked up with the pace group and had a few people with us or we would have felt lost. Haha.
      Best of luck in the future!

    This is awesome and inspiring! I’m a beginner here, what’s your suggestion should I train simply based on zone 2 heart rate or to follow training plan like garmin coach or Runna app where it combines it with interval/speed training? Thanks

    • @bradfinntrains
      @bradfinntrains  8 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Aways good to have a plan. An athletes volume and ability will determine the about of speed/tempo work I have my athletes do. Often times, beginners just need to build consistentcy and volume safely throughout the training with some race pace and tempo efforts in. IMO unless unless you can run, not jog, the entire race, track work is more of a risk to injury than a reward.
