How To Program a Jandy JEP-R Variable Speed Pump Controller

  • In this video I go over the programming of the Jandy JEP-R Variable-Speed Pump Digital Controller for the Jandy Variable Speed pumps. The JEP-R looks complicated to program but is actually quite easy. The JEP-R overall is a good controller for your Jandy Variable speed (VS) pump.
The JEP-R can hold two schedule speed programs and up to a total of eight different speeds. This is where it can be confusing. You can program only two speeds to come on at set times. For example you might want low speed to run from 7:00am to 1:00pm (eStar speed) and Speed 2 to run form 1:00pm to 3pm. So you can set these specific daily run times in the JEP-R in the first two buttons on the controller.
Buttons 3 and 4 can be programmed for a specific speeds (the speeds on a VS pump are referred to as RPM). But they can only be set for a run duration time, like 2 hours, and button 3 and 4 will need to be manually started by pressing the button. There are also optional speeds 5-8 that can be set and accessed thru the menu - these will also need to be manually started.
So overall your programming should be focused on button 1 (eStar) and button 2 on the controller. There are factory set defaults also for all of the buttons, eStar is set at 1750 RPM and Buttons 2-4 are set at 2750 RPM. In the video I show you how to easily change both factory preset speeds.
The main question I get is what run time and RPM should I set my VS pump to? The answer to that question depends on a lot of factors. How big is the pool and overall flow rates are the main factors. For a larger pool, the pump will need to be set to run longer or at a higher speed. To determine the ideal run time and RPM, installing a flow meter is your best option. I like the FlowVis Flow Meter seen in this video:
    FlowVis® Flow Meter - H2flow Review & Overview: • FlowVis® Flow Meter - ...
Installing a flow meter will give you the exact gallons per minute (GPM) of water flowing from the skimmer, into the filter and then back into the pool. Without a flow meter you can make an educated guess based on your pool equipment.
As a rule of thumb you want to stay under 3000 RPM as a high speed setting with button “2.” This will maximize your energy savings and most pool cleaners can be run at 2600-2800 RPM. This also includes solar and a salt cell. The only time that you would use a higher RPM would be for a spa spillway or when you are using your spa and want the full effect of the jets (3450 RPM).
Also, you should run your pool in low speed for the majority of the time. So a common set up would be 1750 RPM for 8 hours a day and 2600 RPM for 2-3 hours a day. Again, this all depends on the pool size and the pool flow rate. Here is a video that illustrates this:

So the Jandy JEP-R is an easy to use and a moderately easy to program variable speed controller.

Thank you for this video! Wish it was written down too! It's a terrible controller! Our installer said to call him and he'll make any changes needed to the program. Probably since I complained about it so much. LOL (I'm sure for a fee he'll come out!) This video has helped us so much! Simple things like shutting it off is not simple. Thank you for that info in the comments! We had our jets turn on/off for no reason. The installer said it was probably something with another part of the pool. I read it's our brand new pump. If it runs on low speed air can get into the system, then turns the jets on to release. The vacuum doesn't move on the star settings either. So now we run the high settings at 95% of the time. Doesn't save electricity as advertised. But with this video, you explained you CAN change the star setting! My installer told me it was un-changeable. Just wanted to say thank you! No only this was video was informative it is an outstanding "how-to" video!

I have to agree with Avi just below. Trying to get this on the first time through made my head explode! The pool company I had install this pump said they programmed an eStar start-stop time but my pump did not shut off at the time they said it would. So, unfortunately, I'm going to have to learn this. I figure I'll just write all down on paper. I have the manual but it simply wasn't that clear - a picture is worth a thousand words.
I actually tried the remote control first but it would not connect when the iAquaLink app was installed on my Pixel 2. I got it to connect once on my old Nexus 6P but when I started using it, it died. I realized that I needed to control the pump from the physical control panel, not the stupid app. If you read reviews about the app, you probably won't want to use it either. Another "unfortunately", if you use the app, you can't use the pump's physical control panel (brilliant design). I had the pool company remove the remote control panel entirely so I could control the pump with the physical control panel as shown in the video. I'm hoping that someday I will be to understand this video and actually program the pump correctly. I'm kinda wary about this because the pool company guru was not able to do this.
I kinda miss my old Hayward single-speed pump. You just set the trip-bolts on the wall-mounted timer and it always works. Ah, the good old days!
Thanks for posting this! I don't remember your name but you were my pool go-to guy when I first moved into this house and needed pool information.

Well the problem is that the pump goes into priming mode when switching from one-speed program to another regardless if the program times overlap. So to avoid this unecessary wear and tear on the pump I install the IQPUMP01 device and the pump no longer primes when changing program speeds. This is not my preferred situation but it worked.....

Great Video! A question if you have time to answer me. I am in Portugal and electricity is priced at 3 levels: during the night from 10PM till 8AM it is cheap, 8 till 10:30AM fairly expensive, 10:30AM till 1PM extremely expensive, 1PM till 7:30PM fairly expensive, 7:30 till 9PM extremely expensive, 9 till 10PM fairly expensive and then during the night cheap. I would like the pump to NOT work when it is extremely expensive : 10:30AM till 1PM and 7:30 till 9PM. Will I have to use the 4 program buttons as it is so complicated? Thanks for your help.

The benefit of a VS pump is it shouldn't matter when you run it. At 1800 RPM it is only using 120 watts. So you can run that for 14 hours and it would be equal to 1 hour of a standard pump. Run it at 2400 RPM and it is still only about 450 watts. I would run it at 1800 RPM during the expensive hours and then a good medium speed 2400 RPM the rest of the time. No need to ever run it over 2400 RPMS unless you are heating your pool or possibly using an attached spa.

Swimming Pool Tips, Reviews & How To - SPL thanks so much! Great to get a reply that makes sense and I did not know that at certain speeds it was consuming so little compared to the normal pumps. But since the pool is quiet big and deep (250m3) there are 2 pumps. One VS (600 till 3450RPM) and the other normal which has a constant speed of 2850RPM but from the same brand. Not to tire to much the VS pump I was thinking of following your advice during the day for the VS pump but at night only use the regular pump. Does this make sense to you and do you think it is a good idea?
Also I noticed that the VS pump is preprogrammed with names such as waterfall, cleaner etc... were these preprogrammed for a reason? Do they actually have a specific function?
      Many thanks!
      And greetings of Portugal

Sometimes these go bad and the only solution is a new unit. But I would call Jandy Tech support 1st.

It's pretty simple. Hit one of the first tow buttons. Typically the 2nd one. It will turn green and pump will turn on.

    Sigh....
Instead of getting simpler, pool controls are increasingly complicated.
A standard 2 speed pump will do what variable speed pumps are purchased to do, save electricity. They have no electronics to fail and have been on the market for decades.
They run at 1725 rpms and 3450 rpms.
When it comes to the difference in electrical consumption, we're splitting dimes here.

I just moved into a place that has this controller, it's awful. If you press buttons too quickly it freaks out and hard resets itself. Such a pain in the a**
