Title should be ‘Holding out for a hero but Lydia got carried away with an idea at 3am and ran with it’ Stream this song here! ffm.to/holdingoutforaheroepic.OYD
I had a similar idea to this! A hopeless fight where escape and life seems out of reach, but in that despair, a lone soldier, the best of them stood in between the enemy, and the friends. A suicide mission, to buy enough time for everyone to escape. On that day a hero was born. On that day they saved everyone. But no one came when they needed a hero, and there was no saving them.
About 10 years ago at Gen Con I listened to Michael Stackpole read one of his short stories. It was about a desperate army sallying forth against impossible odds of monsters that had steadily crushed the kingdom. They sallied forth at sundown and fought an impossible army at night. They had lost all their heroes long before the battle and only had themselves. But in their desperation they found a way to protect everyone they cared about. For it was not an army of human heroes that sallied forth against the monsters, but an army of vampires.
Huh, very versatile song. Original: a lighthearted song about wanting a man. Shrek: the backdrop to a climatic action scene. This: a dramatic tragic end.
I usually worldbuild for D&D but this has made me create a paladin. A man that survives against all odds, the heroic rescue comes half an hour too late for his beloved so he takes his beloved's oath hoping against all hope his service will be enough to curry favor with the god(s) she swore an oath to. He will serve, he will honor their codes and laws and all they stand for, he just wants the woman he cares for back. A lifetime of servitude for a moment of happiness.
"Mayday, Mayday, the Western Front has been breached! Repeat, the Western Front has been breached! Requesting immediate reinforcements!" ( Explosion ) "Battlefield Status Report: no further message received. All quiet on Western Front..."
IF you grew up in the 80s then you would understand that a one night stand is not the desire. The desire is have the hero that will stand by them long term. That was the thinking in the 80s.

This could definitely be used in a musical, and Lydia’s character is the main one that dies in the last scene. And the “I need a hero”s after Alex’s line (until the last one) are sung by the narrator as we watch the dramatic death scene
Exactly, this just needs a cinematic to go with the song. Weather conditions to match the song's settings. Maybe multiple survivors of the battle, each of which are singing this song at different intervals.
The rough panting, the soaking blood dripping from the brow. Lingering memories of duty, of orders among the chaos of her mind. "72 hours... just hold out for 3 days." roaring over and over, for motivation? Desperation? No, survival. Clenching, a slippery grasp on the hilt of her steel. An unwavering horde bellowing forth. The ever dark night, a fortnight spent lost without light. The remaining time lost among the never rising sun. Brothers and Sister lost, only to rise up in arms once again under the beckoning everlasting night. The shattered steel of comrades strewn about, coated in glistening starlit crimson drool. The shambles and clanking of bones risen again. They claw, they scream... they eat.
Wow... just wow... if I'm 100% honest, english is not my first language, so I don't get everything perfectly, as it is pretty elaborate, yet I still find it really beautiful. You have talent, dude!
They are unrelenting, a crushing tide of flesh and bone that rush forward overwhelming us after a few hours of combat. I fall, surrounded by my friends, but find no comfort in their dead eyes. I scream in anger and rage and I rise, turning to the nearest enemy. A young man dressed in blue holding a pike that is way to long to serve him any good. All the better, I dart past it and consume his force and he joins us. Then... Horror as I realized what I did. But I quickly shake it and return to the fight until... LIGHT over takes me. Light painful... But cleansing. The heroes have arrived
‘The time for speeches is done,’ said Dorn. ‘The first great test is here. My order to you all is simple, yet heed it well, and exert yourselves to see it done.’ ‘They are coming. Kill them all.’ Or...... We do not know what our chances of survival are, so we fight as if they were zero. We do not know what we are facing, so we fight as if it was the dark gods themselves. No one will remember us now and we may never be buried beneath Titan, so we will build our own memorial here. The Chapter might lose us and the Imperium might never know we existed, but the Enemy - the Enemy will know. The Enemy will remember. We will hurt it so badly that it will never forget us until the stars burn out and the Emperor vanquishes it at the end of time. When Chaos is dying, its last thought will be of us. That is our memorial -carved into the heart of Chaos. We cannot lose, Grey Knights. We have already won.

I don't know how a cover can be more epic than the original, but I'm here for it Edit: I said this before it came out. The original and this are both epic but in different ways.
Epic music refers to a modern type of classical orchestral music, with or without hybrid elements added to it. Example: adding an electric guitar into the orchestra. And the word orchestral means that it has been written for an orchestra to play. 🤓👆

THE BETRAYAL AT 4:10 OH MY GOD THIS COVER IS EVERYTHING. I know you have a story in the description but I picture this as soilders with some sort of magic trying to keep some dark force from entering the castle, and the captain of the guard lets go as he says that, allowing the dark force in, and it chooses to kill all those who stand in it's path, starting with out main character. (Sorry got carried away there, my thoughts thought thoughtily) So I may or may not be working on a story inspired by this
Very unique take to a song thats almost always been interpreted as one for helpless damsels in distress. This one sounded like an honorable final stand. A final hope, a final cry for survival. Truly grimdark.
It says something about the versatility of an original, when not one, not two, but THREE covers manage to live up to the original. (The other two covers are the medieval cover, and of course the one in Shrek 2). Lydia, you've done it again, amazing!
I was grooving out and singing along and you pulling a "Lydia" and changing up the lyrics near the end to fit the narrative of the story, threw me off guard but gave me goosebumps as most of your covers you "rewrite" or add onto! Beautifully done as usual!
This reminds me of all the times where in a story a problem could possibly be solved with the help of a character previously established as some sort of guardian, like maybe they even gave some sort of promise that applies to the situation. And we, the reader/viewer wonder if they will show up or if that promise is now in the past. Sometimes they do, sometimes they don't. I do like that wondering phase, especially if the characters themselves don't think the help will come. Really tugs on the heartstrings.

Oh my gods thank you so much for this. I once played in a D&D campaign as a Bard, and we were in the middle of the war the losing side mind you. My bard was mortally wounded and the healer wasnt around us so he was going to die. The DM let me use modern song equivalents for his bardic music and since he wanted to do one last thing for his friends sang to the God of music this very song. This was exactly how i heard it in my head (cause i can sing a bit), and the DM was so moved by how i described his final moments the god of music granted a super version of bardic inspiration to the entire army. Thank you for giving his final moments form, i can never repay you for this.
I like the voice of this girl, it's so sweet and yet so epic! Thanks, Lydia, this was a great cover (especially since it comes from one of my favorite childhood movies) Have a happy saturday afternoon and God bless you, take care and greetings from Colombia to you as well.
Wow, this moved me, first time in this channel and didn't expect to have these many feelings. I play a lot of Pathfinder (D&D basically for those that don't know) and this really puts the perspective of the NPCs that know they can't win, but fight anyway with the hope that the heroes will get there on time, or at least that they'll save their country, their friends, their families. Also applies for the times the hero doesn't make it on time. I'm SO going to use this song at some point in my current campaign.
I came into this expecting a fairly standard variation of a song I knew well and liked. _I did not expect for the new lyrics to make me CRY, goddammit!!_ 😭
Man this fits so well with an event that happened in my DnD setting, basically a Gateway to the Abyss was opened resulting in a massive war between demons and what ever remained of the Elven Empire, the gateway was made by one of the elven emperor's, and what ever allys they could find amongst the Humans and Dwarves. It was not enough as the Demons had push to the last few remaining cities of the empire, basically almost 2/3 of the Elven empire was razed, which at its peak the empire stretched to about 1/2 of the continent. Then the dragons came and was able to help hold the line until they found out how to seal the portal shut. Suffice to say there was a lot of hopeless last stands that happened during the war. The Dragons were nearly wiped to the brink of extinction from the war, so they left far away to try and rebuild thier population. And as a result kf the war, basically the area that the demon army had razed had became desolate, rain would no longer fall, the ground perpetually stained ashen grey, trees became petrified husks, and any water there became poisonous. Essentially making a large chunk of the continent uninhabitable.
It was a pleasure to work with you on the artwork illustrating this cover! ⚔💚⚔ You absolutely killed it with this one, the animatic opportunities and fantasy feel are off the charts. Epic is a great way to describe it, I got chills,,
Forward, the Light Brigade!” Was there a man dismayed? Not though the soldier knew Someone had blundered. Theirs not to make reply, Theirs not to reason why, Theirs but to do and die. Into the valley of Death Rode the six hundred. Charge of The Light Brigade vibes. Giving me all kinds of campaign ideas.
I see why Epic was fully capitalized. This cover stands toe to toe with both the original and the version from Shrek 2 by putting a different spin on it. So good.
I only clicked on this to make a comment to the effect that Holding Out for a Hero was already epic, but after listening...wow. That's dark. And amazing. Well done.
Everytime i get really sad i come back to listen one more time me and my ex fiancé would listen to this song a lot, she had past away to cancer 2 years ago and this song fits her so well she was fighter and i miss her so much ❤️❤️ thank you for this amazing cover
This song made me feel things that I really have tried to avoid for months. It's like those sad and lonely nights when you make up scenarios in your head while singing out a new song of how you're feeling. I can definitely say it reassured me of 2 things but one of them definitely was not hope...
Sadly the original is so over played on radio and other media that it takes away the masterfully crafted lyrics. This cover shows just how amazing the song actually is! Super weell done!! Love the epic feeling you put back into it. Love it love it love it 🤘🤘🤘🤘🤌🤌🤌
This...this made me cry within the first minute. As a man raised on "men don't cry" and "suck it up", I don't have words for how impactful that is. This was BEAUTIFUL
So i am running curse of strahd, this songs original version is the main theme song for the campain. This will be used in the boss fight at the end. Love the song, keep it up.
This gave me chills. . . And then it gave me an idea to flip the script of the original song myself "I see the hero I'm facing down the hero on this shining night I feel that he's strong, I see that he's fast And I can tell that he is fresh for this fight"
Me, a healer main, through sobbing tears: I KEEP TRYING TO CAST CURE BUT THE WOUNDS ARE EMOTIONAL, THE SONG IGNORES MITIGATION, AND RESCUE IS ON CD FOR THE NEXT MINUTE
0:48 my brothers I rather fight along side you then any army of thousands let’s make them not forget that we are lions out there beyond that beach it’s immortality TAKE IT ITS YOU’RES!!!!
Lovely cover!! Also I just think it's kinda funny the difference in the names. Like "Lydia the Bard wow extremely epic" and "Alex :) ". Kinda like "this is Williams Reverend the Third and this is his friend Bob"
Villain looks at the battlefield with a smirk. "Do you really think hero is gonna come here? What a joke." "He will come." Wounded warrior let out deafening cry as he died. "What a pity. He died in delusion. He is going for exacaliber for battle. It will need more than 3 days " villain said while getting little impatient with progress of battle. "Look, you told me he is gonna come. He is thinking about us and he will come." Heroine laughed and said. Soon her face became pale. "Yes, it will take him three days." Villain looked at her. "Ask for my help." "NEVER!" Heroine was on the verge of death but still refused to take his help. "Fuck it." Villain cursed under his breath and cut the person aiming for heroine. "Why do you care for that bastard more than your brother." Villain let out those words. And almost cried for her indifference.
@@thegreatandterrible4508 I mean, same, definitely get you are saying. But since the lyrics use masculine terms ("Where have all the good MEN gone", "HE's gotta be strong, and HE's gotta be fast") it's clear the song is about a male-aligned hero. And I want a version that is either 100% gender neutral or about a female-aligned hero for my own personal needs LOL.
Aye Not every story has a good ending there isn't always a hero. This is realistic tragic but real Oh how I do wish we see a part two some necromance is in order
This transforms a somewhat cheesy song into something haunting. You can imagine yourself in a battlefield where line after line has crumbled before enemy. The last line is under assault and there is both fear of death and of defeat. Completely changing the tone in such a way you can actually feel and experience the despair mingled with only the tiniest ray of hope. Amazing. I can’t way to hear more from this artist.
This is particularly resonating for the idea of a undead Paladin who comes back from death not through necromancy or an unholy pact. No nothing like that, just because they said four simple words before they died "I need a hero."
You said Epic... And yet somehow you still undersold it. Surrounding it in a short narrative to ease us into this masterpiece was a solid touch. I suspect there will be many replays of this number in my near future.
Where can I find the instrumental for this? I want to make a version where the woman who needed a hero becomes a hero herself. She was never rescued, so she made it her mission to be the hero for others. No more wishing on stars to make wishes come true, you have to be the star. Wishing only gets you so far, you gotta make the wishes come true yourself!

Lydia thought she could drop one of the best covers of this song and we wouldn’t notice. 15/10!
Epic is a great way to describe it, I got chills,,
Breathtaking. I got completely immersed. Amazing job!
Forward, the Light Brigade!”
Was there a man dismayed?
Not though the soldier knew
Someone had blundered.
Theirs not to make reply,
Theirs not to reason why,
Theirs but to do and die.
Into the valley of Death
Rode the six hundred.
Charge of The Light Brigade vibes. Giving me all kinds of campaign ideas.
It's insane how much a song can change by changing the notes. Lydia The Bard shows us that, no matter what, changing a song can make it better.
I see why Epic was fully capitalized. This cover stands toe to toe with both the original and the version from Shrek 2 by putting a different spin on it. So good.
What do ya mean "but it's epic"? This song was always epic!
"awesome" and "epic" are not exactly synonyms.
That is legitimately what I typed into my TH-cam search bar
I only clicked on this to make a comment to the effect that Holding Out for a Hero was already epic, but after listening...wow. That's dark. And amazing. Well done.
Everytime i get really sad i come back to listen one more time me and my ex fiancé would listen to this song a lot, she had past away to cancer 2 years ago and this song fits her so well she was fighter and i miss her so much ❤️❤️ thank you for this amazing cover
Well, that was not what I wanted, but was definitely what I needed. Thank you for this. Beautiful voice, epic atmosphere.
I absolutely love it!! The dialogues at the beginning bring a great context, and the song is so good! 🤩
beautiful tempo to this version. The slight haunting voice takes an ethereal light to it. Well done
You mean "and it continues to be Epic"
That repetition at the end is absolutely heart wrenching. Such an amazing cover
I hear She-Ra vibes from this. Good job! 👏
This version gave me the chills. This one is actually telling a story
Incredible vocal performance! I love your covers, you should make more covers :)
This gave me chills. . . And then it gave me an idea to flip the script of the original song myself
"I see the hero
I'm facing down the hero on this shining night
I feel that he's strong, I see that he's fast
And I can tell that he is fresh for this fight"
Wow Lydia!
Your vocals are amazing 😊💚
Me, a healer main, through sobbing tears: I KEEP TRYING TO CAST CURE BUT THE WOUNDS ARE EMOTIONAL, THE SONG IGNORES MITIGATION, AND RESCUE IS ON CD FOR THE NEXT MINUTE
Shrek 2 would be proud this is awesome
Damn, the slow but mounting building of tension and power is insane. Truly epic
You made a already epic song more epic, good job
LOVE IT LOVE IT LOVE IT! This is by far my favorite song to see covered because everyone does it differently and it's always amazing.
0:48 my brothers I rather fight along side you then any army of thousands let’s make them not forget that we are lions out there beyond that beach it’s immortality TAKE IT ITS YOU’RES!!!!
You ares? Yours is the word
Version and story behind it are both so good, love them both
Lovely cover!! Also I just think it's kinda funny the difference in the names.
Like "Lydia the Bard wow extremely epic" and "Alex :) ". Kinda like "this is Williams Reverend the Third and this is his friend Bob"
Okay... holy crap! The dialogue intro and then the second verse diversion into Fantastical need for a battle rescue. Dang.
This is giving me a similar vibe to a DnD session where I saved a nation from some parasitic plant and the continent from Tiamat at the same time.
ure absolutely amazing i cant express how much i love the emotion, voice, mix, scenery everything
Villain looks at the battlefield with a smirk. "Do you really think hero is gonna come here? What a joke."
"He will come." Wounded warrior let out deafening cry as he died.
"Ask for my help."
"NEVER!" Heroine was on the verge of death but still refused to take his help.
"Fuck it." Villain cursed under his breath and cut the person aiming for heroine.
"Why do you care for that bastard more than your brother." Villain let out those words. And almost cried for her indifference.
"My brother would never hurt innocent people!"
This somber approach is far different, and it hits differently.
well done.
Praying to the gods she is calling for a heroine because I need a cover of this song singing about a female aligned hero so hard.
I've never liked the words heroine or goddess or similar such words, because it implies a male default for those things
@@Kahvinporo That is an excellent point. What would be the Sapphic equivalent for Hercules?
@@thegreatandterrible4508 Atalanta,
I love the tone of your voice. So magical and emotional.
Damn , Cold Chills! Oorah Semper Fi, Carry On & Beyond 👍💥😳✌️🤟💯💯‼️‼️
It has been years since I last heard a song that gave me chills the way this one did... Bravo
Idk why, but this version makes me feel like they are begging for a hero to save them, without realizing that they were that hero the entire time. :)
This...this was so moving😢; the vocals, delivery, composition (I know nothing about critiquing music, but) this is awesome.
Beautiful cover but also the art!! AMAZING❤
This just grabs you.... I'll be writing tomorrow and listening to this for sure
Aye Not every story has a good ending there isn't always a hero.
This is realistic tragic but real Oh how I do wish we see a part two some necromance is in order
This invoked powerful emotions, I can’t explain it
2:00😍😍best part
This would fit so right in with a story of a Guardsman, in Warhammer 40k, praying for the Space Marines to come raining in.
Qué triste historia que tu propio amor te quité la vida es algo de lo más doloroso 😢
Buen trabajo como siempre Lydia💚👍
"Where are all the Gods?"
Bro they're trying to strike you down right now.
Man, I wish this was on Spotify, it's so good...
It's on Spotify
This transforms a somewhat cheesy song into something haunting. You can imagine yourself in a battlefield where line after line has crumbled before enemy. The last line is under assault and there is both fear of death and of defeat. Completely changing the tone in such a way you can actually feel and experience the despair mingled with only the tiniest ray of hope. Amazing. I can’t way to hear more from this artist.
This is particularly resonating for the idea of a undead Paladin who comes back from death not through necromancy or an unholy pact. No nothing like that, just because they said four simple words before they died "I need a hero."
When you say “Then there’s no way we’re going to make it” the way that you do, that makes me want to protect you/the character.
You said Epic... And yet somehow you still undersold it.
Surrounding it in a short narrative to ease us into this masterpiece was a solid touch. I suspect there will be many replays of this number in my near future.
You promised it would be epic but you only made me cry. Good job
I just love how you make stories to go along with your covers as well as originals!
