I really like your setup, the cleats on the tiller and the multiple different lengths of surgical hose.

We call that a Snap Shackle, a bale is the (usually SS ) metal piece fitted to the boom to attach the shackle to.

Thanks for the information on your sheet to tiller setup which I'minterested in. What or who was your main infuence in doing this. Sounds a bit like that sailor from Victoria whose channel name i forget, but he posted videos some few years ago. I think your vessel is a Newport 30 .... which is an excellent sailer, but with the fin keel can be hard in certain conditions to keep on a heading, sometimes even when hand steering. At least I experienced this tendency on a Cape Caution crossing. I attributed this to tide action in fairly shallow water with many pinacles and bottom irregularities. I'm in your area and would be happy to hear from you.

Who's hittin' the bong inside the cabin?

So you're fully bypassing your mainsheet with this system? Do you have to leave the mainsheet somewhat eased to allow this system to work?

It seems to me like this setup would make the boat want to turn more away from the wind as it begins to do so. Help me understand. For example, let's say you are on a port tack like in the latter part of the video. The boat veers off course to starboard, causing an increase in pressure on the main sail. This then pulls on the tiller causing the boat to turn even more to starboard?? Evidently I am wrong, but why?

Took me a while to be able to visualize it. The system works because a boat will want to round up when the wind picks up (extra pressure on the main). In this system, the boom will be pushed to leeward and that will cause the tiller to be pulled to windward. This has th effect of causing the boat to fall off (countering the round up). The bungees offer resistance (otherwise the tiller would flop over to windward) and also serve to center the tiller if the winds decrease.

the fitting you are uncertain of is a called a spinnaker bale - a typically used on the head and clew of a spinnaker.

When you port tacking, you simply switch over the setup to the other side,
