Ten minutes of sanity in a mad world! Roy, it's so easy - when you know how. Just unbelievable how a rocky outcrop can achieve such effect. Your work putting these videos together is always appreciated.
John, many in the hobby say that model railroading is a form of therapy, and I think they're right. The hobby does indeed offer us a sense of sanity in an otherwise insane world. Thank you for letting me continue to share the adventure with you. ...Roy
Roy, you've become a bit of a master of the white styrofoam and your technique of managing it. The terrain is really coming along very nice. Looking forward to your next installment. Tom
Thank you, Tom. For me, this project and video were both a lot of fun. It's a pleasure to share the experience with you. ...Roy
There are so many ways to do this it is mind bending. I like your technique with the white foam. Thanks for the great work.
Thanks, Craig. For me, this project and video were both a lot of fun. Thanks for letting me share the experience with you. ...Roy

My regular weekly inspiration
Thanks, Adrian. For me, this project and video were both a lot of fun. Thanks for letting me share the experience with you. ...Roy
Roy, Nicely done this week, you really are the styrofoam master. Also you did a super job extending and blending in the road around the corner at Echo Canyon. I for one can't wait to see what you have planned for us next week. Cheers, Chris Perry.
Thanks, Chris. It's always nice to share the hobby with you. I've been working hard on this area of the Pocatello Sub, because it really detracted from the view of Echo Canyon before. I still have to add vegetation everywhere. ...Roy
Wow Roy! It is absolutely amazing the difference that a simple addition of a new terrain feature can make such a dramatic change in appearance of the same space. I too enjoy the scenery aspect of this great hobby!
Thanks, Larry. Indeed, scenery brings a layout to life, even in a limited space. ...Roy
Wow Roy it’s really coming along, great work!
Thanks, Alex. For me, this project and video were both a lot of fun. Thanks for letting me share the experience with you. ...Roy
Great how-to video. Your skills and techniques are really excellent. I learnt a lot about the painting process and how you blend in your colours. Thanks for sharing. Cheers!
Thank, my friend. I appreciate that. It's fabulous, the way we get to share the hobby with each other. Maybe that's the main reason why it's so much fun. ...Roy
great job roy...you and mike fifer are my go to N scale guys
Great stuff Roy. You make it look so easy. This hobby has so many different techniques at our disposal, and you just shared one of the best. Thanks a lot...Anthony
You are so right, Anthony. There are so many different ways to do things in the hobby. Maybe that's one reason why it's so interesting. Thanks for watching and commenting. ...Roy
We should all take a leaf out of your "book" and use good old white foam - you are the master at making it work.
Your resemblance is very life like when you show your comparison to the photographs.
Thanks for the video on what to do with all that spare static grass (it was nice to get a mention) - just don't smoke it!
There must be a market for baseball caps covered in static grass with the UP Evanston Subdivision logo too.
Keep those vids coming. ATB Andy
Your videos have inspired me to use white styrofoam and spackle myself. Thanks for the ideas!
Thanks, John. I have been inspired by so many others in the hobby. Sharing our experiences with each other really is one of the best things about model railroading. ...Roy
I agree with you on the white styrofoam. That rock feature look really good, you did a greta job!
Is it snowing in Panama ? No Roy is working with white foam on his layout again!!!! LOL Looks Great Roy!
Guess what - my wife actually uses those tiny beads of white styrofoam to replicate snow when she puts together the nativity scene at Christmas. It gets into everything when it blows around. I guess that would be a Panamanian snow-drift (LOL). ...Roy
Hi Roy! It just gets better and better. Thanks for sharing. Cheers. Bob
Thanks, Bob. For me, this project and video were both a lot of fun. Thanks for letting me share the experience with you. ...Roy
Looks great Roy, like I’ve said before. It’s always a pleasure watching your videos. Very well put together

Another great video, Roy! Thanks for posting.
Thanks, my friend. For me, this project and video were both a lot of fun. Thanks for letting me share the experience with you. ...Roy
very good Roy. lots of tips in this video. water down a brush to make sure the paint doesn't hide the terrain texture. but i really like the paper template, that made the job a lot easier. thanks for sharing the way you work on your layout.
Thank you, Sparky. We model railroaders really do seem to enjoy sharing our experiences in the hobby with each other. In fact, that may be the best thing about the hobby. I've certainly noticed that you enjoy sharing the hobby, and I want you to know how much I appreciate all that you do for the model railroad community. ...Roy

Thanks, my friend. For me, this project and video were both a lot of fun. Thanks for letting me share the experience with you. ...Roy
My personal preference is for casting rocks with molds I've made. You're carving looks quite effective, however. Differing terrain sometimes may require different techniques. Your layout looks terrific.
Thanks, Jerry. It's always nice to share the hobby with you. One of the great things about model railroading is that we have so many options to choose from in just about every phase of the hobby, including scenery making. ...Roy
Awesome video Roy, I am currently making a mountain and a tunnel on my layout!

Hi Roy, lots of great tips as always. I especially liked the paper template idea. Can't wait to see what you do with the disappearing road. Until next time, later.
Thanks, Norman. For me, this project and video were both a lot of fun. Thanks for letting me share the experience with you. ...Roy
Great video Roy! I think it came out looking very close to the prototype, I like the way you blended the colors together. You sure can't tell that's white styrofoam!
Thanks, Tony. For me, this project and video were both a lot of fun. Thanks for letting me share the experience with you. ...Roy

Nice looking scenery job Roy! Hard to tell the difference from the pic of the model and the original location. I'm sure your house guests enjoying seeing your layout. Did the Pope stop by to run some trains? Cheers, Dan
Thanks, Danny. I appreciate that. The wife and I had great fun when our guests were here. We were genuinely sorry when they had to leave. Nope, the Pope (hey, that rhymes) didn't show up, despite my invitation. He would've had a lot of fun! ...Roy
You did a great job with the white styrofoam Roy , looks very realistic !
Thanks, David. Many modelers don't like white styrofoam because it's messy. But you can do some amazing things with it. You just need to keep a ShopVac handy. ...Roy
Your welcome Roy !
Another great video Roy. I’m doing the exact same thing on my first layout. Using white styrofoam for all the mountains and things. Would like to invite to watch my first RR video when you have time. Thanks Roy
Thanks, my friend. I appreciate your comment. I'm going to go on over and look for your first RR video. ...Roy
I like the way it turned out and makes a great view block.
Mike
Thanks, Mike. For me, this project and video were both a lot of fun. Thanks for letting me share it with you. ...Roy
@@n-scaleunionpacificevansto6569 I am the same way.
Mike
Looking good! 👍
Thanks, my friend. For me, this project and video were fun. Thanks for letting me share it with you. ...Roy
I just have one question how do you make the styrofoam foam look like ruff rocks and cracks and crevises?
Coming on well, Roy. Unfortunately I haven't been able to do a lot to my layout for the last two months because it is too cold to work in the railway shed and guess what? I't's been snowing! Last week you claimed to be the world's slowest model railroader... No you arn't! - I am!
Still, I'm dowmloading all of your videos so that I can go through them again when the weather warms up. All the best, Ken.
Thanks, Ken. I'm delighted to hear that you are downloading the videos. I'm also delighted to know that you may find them helpful. Sharing the hobby really is one of the best things about model railroading. ...Roy
Looks good Roy
Thanks, Chris. For me, this project and video were fun. Thanks for letting me share it with you. ...Roy
Hi Roy
You make it look easy old son!!
It looked pretty close to the pic. I think I may have found a way to make the hexagonal basalt columns.
I will give it some more thought before I attempt an explanation. I was looking at an old lumber grade marking crayon...which is hexagonal
And I was ...er inspired!
Thanks, Bill. For me, this project and video were both a lot of fun. Thanks for letting me share the experience with you. ...Roy
Another good video Roy
Thanks, Frank. For me, this project and video were both a lot of fun. Thanks for letting me share it with you. ...Roy
Roy,Just very good. First up I said "Wow!" Regards Stephen.
Thanks, Stephen. For me, this project and video were both a lot of fun. Thanks for letting me share the experience with you. ...Roy
Roy, I was looking at the verdant scene behind you and really appreciating the way it looked. I've done a little more research on my project but it seems to me that I can only get the trains I want in 00 scale. Game changer really. I got some aerial photos of the station, viaduct and goods yard and have started to simplify the track. Just got to get a new house to put it in!!!! Regards Stephen.
@@stephenriley9084 Doing research in model railroading can be a lot of fun. At least it has been for me. One of the nice things about the hobby is that we have so many choices, so I think it's great that you've selected 00 scale. It sounds like you're having fun, and that's what the hobby is all about. ...Roy
Roy, I think 00 has selected me like when I was a teenager! I think I will buy the trains and rolling stock I'm interested in and put on a simple dcc layout and get running. The big one, I'll leave for later😀. Regards Stephen.
Nice job bud!
Thanks, William. For me, this project and video were both a lot of fun. Thanks for letting me share the experience with you. ...Roy
Looking good
Thanks, Eric. For me, this project and video were both a lot of fun. Thanks for letting me share the experience with you. ...Roy
I found this for Roy of a UP Evanston Sub movie-- starts about halfway through: th-cam.com/video/pW3oueTPgQI/w-d-xo.html
Came out looking good, but you need a hot knife for carving styrofoam my friend.
Thanks for letting me share the experience with you, Ron. I think you are right about a hot knife. I need to get one. I do have a hot wire cutter, but it didn't occur me to use it when working on this project. ...Roy
what do you do with the mess outside....haha, just not worth it...looks good thou, nice job
I give the white beads of styrofoam to my wife, and she uses them as snow in rhe manger scene at Christmas (ha!). ...Roy
It's real close, looks nice Roy, White foam is all use...easy to work with. Bob, Longshadowsmodeltrees.com
Thanks, Bob. I enjoy working with white styrofoam, although I know many in the hobby wouldn't touch the stuff. It really is cheap, light-weight, and readily available compared to extruded foam. ...Roy
Yes Sir, it is.
Did you know it looks like a UFO landed on your layout?
Ha! It certainly looks that way, my friend. ...Roy
Looks great Roy!
Thanks, Jeffrey. For me, this project and video were both a lot of fun. Thanks for letting me share the experience with you. ...Roy
Looks great Roy!
