Making Yoda CGI was a necessary choice going forward. He's having a lot more active role in the next two movies which they couldn't have done with a puppet. Also, I love how you understood that Qui-Gon was the father figure Anakin needed. He was actually the one who could have prevented Anakin becoming Darth Vader.
I am actually glad they replaced the puppet here with the CG model for the 3D/Blu-Ray. The original puppet in this movie younged him up way too much and was one of the very few legitimate flaws of this otherwise fantastic movie.
I remember seeing the Phantom Menace in theaters. People's heads were zipping and dipping during the podrace and screaming and yelling during the big lightsaber fight. There was a little kid dressed like Anakin who kept yelling joy everytime Anakin appeared on screen lol. It was awesome!
People love to bash on the prequels all the time, but they forget how much hype there was for the Phantom Menace when it was the first Star Wars movie in 16 years. There are definitely flaws with the movie, but that doesn’t mean that it wasn’t an enjoyable experience for some people. The Phantom Menace is one of the most underrated movies in the franchise, I enjoy rewatching it every now and then
It’s sad how millions upon millions of SW prequel haters seem to have misunderstood this concept and refuse to accept the truth otherwise. They don’t care, they just want to hate something. Hate leads to suffering
And my day has been made! I've really been looking forward to your reaction to the Prequel Trilogy, and you did not disappoint. I love how you take the time to question and work out different aspects of the plot and the characters. Back in 1999, the hype for this film was unbelievable. We camped out to buy tickets for the premiere and I was even interviewed on TV. Great memories!
Thank you so much! That really means a lot 🫶🤍 would have been so awesome to camp out for the movie back in the day hahaha wish I could have experienced it!
@@icedquokka One of the best parts of the experience was meeting fellow Star Wars fans and interacting with them. I still remember watching The Phantom Menace for the first time in the theatre and the rush of euphoria seeing a new Star Wars movie after such a long time. The whole audience cheered when the words "A long time ago in a galaxy far, far away..." appeared on screen.
One of the great foreshadowings in this film is the music. At the end, during the celebration scene, if you listen carefully to the music, the song they are playing is actually a lively version of the Emperor's theme music from Return of the Jedi. They are hinting that this win is actually a loss for the good guys.
As i understand, Lucas did wait a little because of developing technologies, but he didn't mean to wait that long. The plan was to have the prequels and sequels done in a time that would let him retire at a more normal age, but life kind of got in the way, and Ep. I also had some serious delays in pre-production. I think development on that started around 10+ yrs. prior. Lucas always wanted to be at the cutting edge of effects innovation with his company ILM, and so many other studios wanted to use his technology. He wanted to profit from that, but he also wanted to keep ahead of the competition so that the prequels would still dazzle. Those two goals were at odds with each other, and in retrospect he could have done a better job of balancing it. From 1984-99, he knew that the popularity of the original trilogy had never yet been matched in another film or franchise. He felt pressured to deliver a similar level of wow, which may have been an unreasonable expectation. But this pressure led to additional clashes between Lucas and his creative staff as the staff struggled to understand and support his vision for The Phantom Menace.
There weren't any production delays in The Phantom Menace. He wrote it with the backstory he had for the original Star Wars. Production started as far back as 1994, just when he was doing writing. But the actual production and filming started in 1997. It wasn't something he was planning to do all along. But Star Wars proved to be popular and he had the backstory and he had the ability to do what he wanted.
@@no_rubbernecking 🤷🏾♂️ You're mostly not wrong and neither is she. But the Phantom Menace was pretty much on schedule. Things like the roleplaying game, Dark Horse Comics and the earlier books proved Star Wars was still very popular. And seeing what Spielberg could do with Jurassic Park he figured he could do the backstory he wrote the kind of justice he felt goes with it. But these trilogies are massive undertakings. From writing to release of the original trilogy was 9 years, same for the prequels. But nothing was written for a sequel trilogy. He didn't want to commit what would effectively be the rest of his life to another trilogy.
Yes, Qui-Gon was played by the one and only Liam Neeson who of course starred in Taken(the movie you refrenced "I will find you...") as well as many other movies. That said, fans really (but unnecessarily) hated Jar Jar. Many of them chose to turn that hate towards Ahmed Best, the actor who played him and bullied, harassed, and threatened Best so much he nearly took his own life. Thankfully he stayed strong and pushed through it. I can't even begin to fathom why people think that kind of behavior is ok in any way.
@@icedquokka also my dear, thats NOT Darth maul theme, its caled "duel of the fates", his name is so clear, is the duel of the two fates of anakin, as a jedi... or as DARTH VADER, the light vs the darkness of the force, which one is gonna rule and guide Anakin's fate is the question. If he was trained by Quai Gon, he had be raised by his wisdom which was the most near of the light side of the force, instead, he is gonna be trained with the failures of the order, which is gonna push him to the dark side. Its sad, the moment Quai Gon dies, Anakin's fate as DARTH VADER is set...
@@icedquokka If you want to get to know Darth Maul, from beginning to end, and truly understand the Jedi vs Sith dynamic, you need to watch The Clone Wars series. Especially the last few seasons are superior to all, yes all, the Star Wars films. 😊
The end of the fight between Qui Gon, Obi Wan and Darth Maul shows the difference between Sith and Jedi very well. When the laser partitions separated Qui Gon and Maul from each other, the Jedi began to meditate, calming down, and the Sith, on the contrary, walked in a rage like a tiger in a cage, filling himself with emotions. And when Obi Wan attacked Maul after the death of his master, you can see that he was filled with rage, which took him out of balance, since this is not the way of the Jedi and he does not know how to handle it, and Darth Maul, being a Sith who has been raised inside the order since childhood, who on the contrary feeds himself with emotions, easily he was defeated and thrown into the mine, and only when Obi Wan was able to calm down and return to balance, he was able to defeat Maul мне
@@jeffburnham6611 yes of course, you literally can see anger in his face, more than that in certain moment in the Clone wars show he and one other character talks about it and that conversation make Obi angry "Your rage has unbalanced you, this isn't a Jedi way, is it?"
38:40 Now, imagine us Star Wars fans seeing this film for the first time, and seeing Darth Maul's double-bladed lightsaber ignited in front of all of us. Pure awe. In honor of this film's 25th anniversary, you did this reaction well. Great job, Quokka.
Jedi used to yse double blades sabers, however the main form that worked with it was a form that you had to use anger to make efficient, because of this the Jedi that used one often turned to the dark side so the Jedi banned them
The music tells the story. Yoda said, "Grave danger I fear in his training." Meanwhile, in the background, the notes of the Imperial March play softly.
In a series of interviews for the Star Wars Archives books, Lucas clarified the nature of the Force, the Jedi, the Sith, and the whole concept of the midi-chlorians (as well as single-celled organisms called The Whills which embody the Force) as it relates to the symbiotic relationship of all life in the universe. The idea is that the Whills are what communicate the Force through the midi-chlorians in all life forms, and as long as there is peace and harmony and the natural life cycle, the Force is in balance. The Jedi, according to Lucas, were never meant to be superhero sorcerer knights but, rather, the equivalent of Buddhist monks who are trained in defensive martial arts -- he says they were intended to be diplomats and aesthetes who helped maintain that balance. It's only through the gradual corruption of the Republic through greed and lust for power (as represented in this film by the Trade Federation and, as we'll see later, other corrupt capitalist concerns) that the Jedi are used more for security and a police force, paying only lip service to their initial role as diplomats (which is the role assigned to the Jedi when they first appear in this film). So, while Qui-Gon is spouting the dogmatic views of the Jedi when he says the midi-chlorians are what communicate the will of the Force to Jedi and other Force users (like the Sith and, as we gradually learn throughout the franchise, others), what's really going on is that the midi-chlorians are really more of a measure of how easy it is for someone trained properly to commune with the Force and use it. The Sith, again, according the Lucas (he makes a point in saying there was never a war between the Sith and the Jedi), were Force users who relied on tapping into their anger and negative emotions and they ruled the galaxy for a while until their own greed and lust for power cannibalized them so that in the end there were only two -- a Master, who had the power, and the Apprentice, who wanted it, and eventually the Apprentice would either destroy his Master, become the new Master, and then take on an Apprentice for himself, OR the Master would destroy the Apprentice and take on a new Apprentice. Each Sith sought out an Acolyte to serve as this future Apprentice. This is the relationship you see play out in the original trilogy -- Darth Sidious, the Emperor, and Darth Vader each try to turn Luke to the Dark Side to help them take out the other. It's also important to note that, as Yoda said many times in Empire and Return, once you turn to the Dark Side, you are consumed by your greed, lust for power, your anger, your hatred, your fear. It's overwhelming and immediate. So, as the Sith grow in power, the balance of the Force is thrown off by the increasing presence of the Dark Side. According to Lucas, this affected the Whills much like antibodies fighting off a disease, and so they influenced the midi-chlorians to create a force to combat this imbalance: Anakin. Anakin is the key to defeat the growing power of the Dark Side, and how he will do this is determined by the outcome of that fight between Qui-Gon Jinn and Darth Maul -- if Qui-Gon wins, Anakin has the father figure he needs to help overcome his fear, anger, and hate, but since Maul won, Anakin turns to the Dark Side and helps wipe out the Jedi before he, at last, is able to be turned back to the light by the love of his son and thus defeats Darth Sidious, wiping out the Sith and restoring the balance to the Force. Lucas said he had two questions he wanted to explore with the prequel trilogy: What causes a good person to turn evil, and what causes a democracy to become a fascist dictatorship. He was very much a product of the idealistic liberalism of the counterculture from the '60s (hell, much of the Force and its concepts are taken almost word for word from the trippy ramblings of anthropologist Carlos Castaneda as well as watered down Buddhism) and this has a strong influence on the whole saga. Basically, Lucas wanted to create a new secular mythology to teach the concepts of symbiotic cooperation vs. greed and power to modern 12-year-olds since that's when your brains are developed to start asking bigger philosophical questions. Apparently he was going to elaborate on all this further in the prequels but the fans got so up in arms about the idea that the Force was created by microscopic organisms (which isn't true, but there you go) that he decided to shy away from it. He was going to then go into further examination of it, as well as the Whills, in the sequels, but then he sold the franchise to Disney and they threw out his plans for the sequels and made their own which don't develop Lucas's themes or focus on his ideas at all). We did get a Yoda arc that touched on the Whills and a weird mystical manifestation of them in the Clone Wars cartoon, but it didn't elaborate too much more than help explain how trained Jedi could maintain their consciousness when their life force entered the Cosmic Force upon death. tl;dr: Star Wars is a lot deeper than most people realize.
I'm catching up after watching your OT reactions. I just love how quickly you seemed to be tune with Star Wars. The empathy, the humour, the depth, and the silliness. I grew up with the originals and I loved the prequels as they were each released. Glad to see you loved this one too. And also I had similar reactions to recognizing Portman and noticing when the "Queen" was not her. It was confusing until I realized what was going on (I think I had the idea, when Padme was saying what she said while on Tatooine, but certainly was fully rewarded when she made the big reveal, hehe). Not everyone notices faces that well, apparently (no one else I was with noticed). ❤
your breakdown of the opening crawl is pretty spot on. in addition to the cgi this movie had more practical effect shots than the original trilogy combined.
That's such misdirection. This film is rightly caned for huge over-reliance on CGI. It's why it holds up so poorly (compared to, for example, Lord of the Rings). Even the actors acknowledge this.
39:26 This is why: Despite all of the advantages offered by the weapon, its weaknesses were equally obvious. Special training was required to wield the weapon effectively, with those attempting to use it without such discipline likely to bisect or impale themselves. Attacking and parrying with the double-bladed lightsaber was limited by the fact that, unlike a normal lightsaber, one could not simply readjust their posture, as the saberstaff required them to hold it either horizontally or diagonally while fighting. The techniques employable with a double-bladed lightsaber were extremely limited, as the second blade rendered many positions and movements impossible to execute, or required the wielder to twist oneself awkwardly around the weapon to do so. Many techniques required the user to perform elaborate flourishes in order to move the staff around their body, leaving them open, and any sort of fighting method that focused on power or penetration was difficult to apply. Also, the enlarged hilt common to most double-bladed lightsabers presented a large target, difficult to defend. Opponents would often attempt to employ the sun djem contact mark, with even experienced saberstaff wielders being vulnerable to this tactic. However, a duelist who used the more contemporary saberstaff design had a fallback option in case of this; with a separate lightsaber mechanism for each emitter, at least one half of the weapon was very likely to continue functioning if it was sundered.
Ten thousand Jedi and only two Sith. Man, that kid really DID bring balance to the force. By the time he was done, there were exactly two of each... balance! The Jedi were quite naive to interpret that prophecy to mean that "balance" meant everything would go their way.
A friend of mine who's into racing pointed out they sampled the sound of the Indy Cars for Anakin's Podracer. The other podracers have unique sounds as well, but none cut through like Anakin's.
7:33 Fun Fact for you, Qoukka: Ewan McGregor, the actor who played Obi-Wan in this trilogy, is the nephew of actor Dennis Lawson, who played Wedge Antilles (Red 2) in the original trilogy
The first film to have organic CGI talking characters with lots of screen time, as well as terrain and crowd simulation, which is common now. A couple of years later, the technology quality increased with Lord Of The Rings.
This is why watching these movies in production order is the best way to watch the films. In addition to the production quality increase, the references to the original trilogy make more sense, like when Qui-Gon (Obi-Wan’s master) tried to use the Jedi mind trick.
I love how subtle the name of the song for the battle of Darth Maul vs Qui-gon and Obi-wan for what it meant for the galaxy real subtle “Duel of The Fates”
The droids could walk through the shield because the shield only blocks high velocity things like lasers or anything moving quickly. The droids move slowly while they walk allowing them to go through the shield.
Obi-Wan never had a green lightsaber in the originals. The green lightsaber first appeared in Return of the Jedi when Luke made a new lightsaber after he lost his blue one fighting Vader.
It is a mix of practical effects and cgi. Each prequel film had more miniatures, matte pairing , and prosethucs and make up than the entire original trilogy out together but they also used a lot of cgi. Many of the arts are foreground onky, meaning they built the floor and the part of the set that will be close to camera and then used CGI backgrounds. Jar jar was performed by a actor in set then replaced by a CG character. Tattoine was a set in Tunisia. Nqboo was a mix, the exterior was shot in Lake Como, Italy while the interior was shot a Shepaeton studios in England(same place where the interior s in the original trilogy where)
There is a theory that all the star wars movies are from the perspective of r2-d2 because he is shown to be able to achieve feats that made him look like a hero
The force is an energy field, the midichlorians are kinda like microscopic divining rods that channel or sense the force, the more midichlorians in your cells, the more force sensitive you are. That’s how I’ve always thought of it.
In reference to your mention of "That's how Obi-Wan got his green lightsaber.". In the original trilogy Old Ben Kenobi's (Obi-Wan's) lightsaber is blue. Perhaps you are thinking of Luke who had his father's blue lightsaber until Vader cut off his hand in Empire Strikes Back and he lost it. So he built a new one which was green that we saw in Return of the Jedi. Obi-Wan's lightsabers have been blue right along. Lightsaber colors do have some significance.
Yoda in the original theatrical version of TPM was a puppet that looked like he was on drugs. They changed him to CGI at some point to make it match the AOTC and ROTS version of him.
@@icedquokka it looked a lot different than the og series yoda. Its a good choice to switch but i still like ep1 yoda puppet but it did look a bit weird
Yeah, the original puppet for some weird reason did not look as good as the 1982 puppet. When they were working on Episode II, they were debuting a CGI Yoda so they used that CGI model to re-do the effects for the home release of Episode I on DVD. You should look up the Ep I puppet Yoda. This re-do was the right call.
Even though I like the first three Star Wars movies the best I think the prequels are pretty good even though a lot of fans hated or didn't like them. I think you're a gorgeous woman and I like your Australian accent and I'm an American.
Prequels Hype! :D 39:40 - "Why haven't the Jedi thought of the double lightsaber": Remember that the Jedi are peacekeepers, not warriors. Their lightsaber are designed for defense, not for maximum lethality. In video games and other non-canon media however some Jedi DID employ double-bladed lightsabers like Darth Maul's. Bastila Shan from Knights of the Old Republic for instance. 45:35 - "What does it mean he will bring balance?" - The Jedi didn't really either... Ultimately, it meant destroying the Sith, but not before wiping out the Jedi as well. 48:00 - "But he was a master and he died." - There's a lore explanation for that (besides Darth Maul's own martial prowess). The Jedi of that time used a form of combat called Ataru, which relied heavily on agility and Force-enhanced physical conditioning. This was highly efficient to end fights quickly, but very costly on energy in long-drawn fights, which is exactly what the fight with Darth Maul was. In other words, exhaustion was Qui-Gon's downfall. Later on, Obi-Wan enhanced and taught a different form called Soresu which focused on defense and resilience. This worked wonders against battle droids, multiple opponents and duelists who relied on more aggressive forms. 53:00 Funnily enough, the original release used a puppet Yoda, but it was heavily criticized due to how it clashed by the rest of the movie that relied heavily on CGI. So it was later changed to a fully CGI Yoda. The political elements was also why both episode 1 and 2 were criticized.
We're one week away from the 25th anniversary of the original release of this movie. Don't know about the rest of the world but here in the US it's returning to theatres for a limited time to celebrate.
The prequels are more political because it's not just about how Anakin became Darth Vader, but also about how a democracy becomes a dictatorship. and yes, while known for its use of CGI, the prequels do still contain many practical effects. In fact, this one film has more practical effects than the entire original trilogy put together.
In this movie, Yoda was originally a puppet, but turned to cgi by episode 2, and this film was reedited with CGI Yoda. When the VHS and DVD originally came out it was still puppet Yoda.
Oh! Funny note about something you said, regarding the time between the trilogies and "waiting" for the technology to improve. You are correct, but - ALSO - it was less 'waiting' and more Lucas running and pouring his money into his FX and tech companies to continue to push and force the advancements in the technology in order to better achieve his visions and improve the tools for all movie makers. His influence and impact on the movie industry is fascinating.
If you like racing games at all, they made a podracing game on N64 that's actually on steam now. It was good for its time. In that game BTW, the pods hit speeds over 1000 kph while boosting, if you were wondering how fast they go. Imagine flying at speeds approaching the sound barrier in an open canopy like a meter or two off the ground. They're seriously suicide machines. "Very dangerous" was the understatement of the year.
Double side weapons are mostly impractical when used as we have seen in this movie. It only works because jedi with super human reflexes and force connection. So makes sense most jedi would find it much more cumbersome as weapon vs regular lightsaber.
jedi also only use their weapons for defense and having a double saber is too aggressive. The only jedi to actually have a double saber turned out rogue working for the seppies
My understanding is that when Lucas saw what his Industrial Light and Magic company was doing with Jurassic Park, he realized the technology might be ready for him to do the prequels.
Not sure if this was mentioned previously since I haven’t read all the comments but one thing to remember about the fights and force use is that this is the republic and the Jedi at their height of power. The Jedi in these movies have been trained from a very young age and are far more skilled in fighting and using the force than in later movies. By the time of the Original trilogy, almost all Jedi are dead or very old.
Fun fact THIS IS PLAYING IN THEATRES RIGHT NOW, I'm not sure where all it is actually playing, I saw it pop up in my google news that Star Wars episode I just made 8. something million in the box office and was like what!? So checked and my local theater is airing it may 3rd till May 16th (my 44th birthday) so I not only can finally see it in theatres, but can see it for my old ass birthday 🤣
27:40 Anakin Skywalker happened. 30:25 Yes, Anakin is feeling what any other child would feel in his situation. But he has the ability to kill people with a thought. Notice him doing that in Empire Strikes Back. Jedi need to hold themselves to a higher standard even at that age. And speaking of, the real problem is that Qui-Gon wants Anakin to skip all of the early teachings that would be handled by Yoda for Jedi Initiates between the ages of 3 and about 10 and go right to the Padawan stuff which starts from maybe 9 (Rooper Nitani) to 16 (Dooku) and can go all the way to 25 or older. Obi-Wan is a 25 year old Padawan and no one has a problem with it. 32:30 No. This will help: “The core of the Force-I mean, you got the dark side, the light side, one is selfless, one is selfish, and you wanna keep them in balance. What happens when you go to the dark side is it goes out of balance and you get really selfish and you forget about everybody … because when you get selfish you get stuff, or you want stuff, and when you want stuff and you get stuff then you are afraid somebody is going to take it away from you, whether it’s a person or a thing or a particular pleasure or experience. “Once you become afraid that somebody’s going to take it away from you or you’re gonna lose it, then you start to become angry, especially if you’re losing it, and that anger leads to hate, and hate leads to suffering. Mostly on the part of the person who’s selfish, because you spend all your time being afraid of losing everything you’ve got instead of actually living. “Where joy, by giving to other people you can’t think about yourself, and therefore there’s no pain. But the pleasure factor of greed and of selfishness is a short-lived experience, therefore you’re constantly trying to replenish it, but of course the more you replenish it, the harder it is to, so you have to keep upping the ante. You’re actually afraid of the pain of not having the joy. “So that is ultimately the core of the whole dark side/light side of the Force. And everything flows from that. Obviously the Sith are always unhappy because they never get enough of anything they want. Mostly, their selfishness centers around power and control. And the struggle is always to be able to let go of all that stuff. “And of course that’s the problem with Anakin ultimately. You’re allowed to love people, but you’re not allowed to possess them. And what he did is he fell in love and married her and then became jealous. Then he saw in his visions that she was going to die, and he couldn’t stand losing her. So in order to not lose her, he made a pact with the devil to be able to become all-powerful. When he did that, she didn’t want to have anything to do with him anymore, so he lost her. “Once you are powerful, being able to bring her back from the dead, if I can do that, I can become emperor of the universe. I can get rid of the Emperor. I can make everything the way I want it. Once you do that, you’ll never be satiated. You’re always going to be consumed by this driving desire to have more stuff and be afraid that others are going to take it away from you. And they are. Every time you get two Sith together, you have the master, the apprentice, and the apprentice is always trying to recruit another apprentice to join with him to kill the master. The master knows that basically everybody below him wants his job. “Only way to overcome the dark side is through discipline. The dark side is pleasure, biological and temporary and easy to achieve. The light side is joy, everlasting and difficult to achieve. A great challenge. Must overcome laziness, give up quick pleasures, and overcome fear which leads to hate.” -- George Lucas, The Clone Wars writers meeting 2010
12:03 "I Don't Know The Time Difference Between The Prequels And The Original Trilogy" Well, episode I was 30 years before episode IV and episode II is 10 years after episode I
4:55 "Also, Who's That Actor?, He Looks So Familiar" Since you didn't specify which Actor you were referring to: The actor who played Obi-Wan is Ewan McGregor and the other actor is Liam Neeson
Hello there, I loved watching your reaction of the OT. Just so you know (without getting into spoilers lol), a lot of your interpretations were actually 100% correct. Hope you enjoy the Prequels!
Two of my favorite Qui-Gon Jinn lines in this movie are: "The ability to speak does not make you intelligent" (So useable for so many people in real life) "There's always a bigger fish" Fun fact: Natalie Portman and Keira Knightley looked so identical in their full Queen Amidala makeup and costuming that their own mothers couldn't tell them apart.
when the movie was released Yoda was a puppet but was changed to CGI as the puppet looked too old compared to the puppet used in the original Trilogy as Yoda was supposed to be Younger
Qui-Gon was a much more flexible and open-minded Jedi knight, which might have gone a long way toward preventing Annakin's fall to the dark side. But in the end it was the rigidity and inflexibility of the Jedi order as a whole that led to their downfall.
A lot of your questions get answered in later material though some are not in the movies and for those I’d recommend looking into the animated TV show “The Clone Wars” Also there is just plenty of other fun content out there in many mediums some from the old E.U. Essentially that is material from before Disney took over and then the projects Disney done.
I've heard the theory that Jar Jar was actually meant to be competent and strong with the force but just playing the fool (actually a good strategy, if your enemy doesn't think much of you they aren't going to focus on you), but because audiences hated him the writers dropped him.
Padmé is The Queen of Naboo and she is 14 years old, Anakin is 9 years old, Obi-Wan is able to defeat Darth Maul when his Master could not, because Obi-Wan was using the Dark Side as he was angry his master was dying and scared for his own Life you can see it in his face when they are fighting
The only thing I can tell you about Darrh Maul is, the color of his skin, the horns on his head and the facial markings, are all features of his particular race. There's much more about this character that will be revealed if you ever decide to watch Clone Wars and Rebels animated series, after you finish the prequels.
Great reaction IQ .... Remember one is not born a Jedi.... Everyone has midichlorinans which those that have a large amount can then access the Force(what is known as Force sensitive). You can then train on how to use it to become a Jedi. Or if not properly train one can access the dark side.
When I saw this movie I did not know Natalie Portman or Kiera Nightly so I never noticed the switching until the reveal. I thought if two Jedi missed it then I'm on par to be a Jedi.
They weren't waiting for the technology, Lucas was creating the technology. Ever since the original trilogy series he has set the standard for movie making. Star Wars(1977 took in 273 million dollars for it's first run in theatres domestically and held that record until James Cameron's Titanic finally unseated it in the 1990's.) was the first "Blockbuster" movie of all time, that term had never been used before to describe a movie. I suggest you watch the "Empire Of Dreams" documentary. It's the official story of the Star Wars movies.
That is his own revisionist history. His 9 film saga never delved into the prequel era until he started working on Empire strikes back. Luke was supposedly going to visit three separate worlds to lean a new lesson from three masters; Yoda, Obi-Wan, and Anakin. As a cost cutting measure Darth Vader and Anakin Skywalker were combined, and the three worlds was changed to just one. This idea gave him the inspiration to start working on the prequel’s. He was so caught up in them that he nearly lost interest, writing his third film. But that’s not the only reason why return the Jedi was the weakest. After Empire’s release, George was kicked out of the writers and directors guild for not including Irvin Kushner’s name in the opening credits. Which meant he couldn’t work with his ideal directors to make the third film or the other three films afterwards. His nine part plan was to have Darth Vader would die in ep 6. Then the next three films will be about Luke Skywalker looking for his sister and defeating the emperor. Each movie would be had a separate Director with George coming back to do the last film. Then tie it all together with the prequels. But because of all the extra behind-the-scenes drama, George had to pretty much micromanage the director’s chair for return the Jedi, which means he had to spend less time at the Lucasfilm ranch which destroyed his marriage (allegedly). But not being in the guild meant he couldn’t get Steven Spielberg or any of his friends to work on Return or any of his future projects. So after the release of Jedi, George pretty much disappeared. Throughout that time, he mostly worked on behind the scenes stuff, ILM, and basically managing the internals of Star Wars without actually making any more movies. He became more of a business manager than a creative director. Working behind the scenes in smaller films like the dark crystal and willow, and advancing filmmaking techniques and technology. George finally decided it might’ve been time to come back to Star Wars, but he was afraid that Star Wars wasn’t going to sell very well and was worried that it would become the next James Bond. Lots of sequels and follow ups but no substance. So he went back and re-released his original trilogy in 1995 with digital upgrades with sound and picture. George begin working on his prequel films. 2 years later the special editions came out with added scenes and visual effects. And a new ending that featured assets from the upcoming The Phantom Menace. The most creative genius of our time, shrewd, businessman, or a complete hack. The fact is George Lucas it’s just a man like any of us. And the truth lies somewhere in the middle. Like any other creative person with a case of OCD, he can’t help but changing things to suit himself. Even if he has to change history.
@brucechmiel7964 1. Learn what paragraphs are. 2. George always had the prequels in mind or else he wouldn't have give films Episode numbers until the late 90's. 3. You're either intentionally misunderstanding or just plain lying with your wall of text to sound smart.
@@brucechmiel7964 Also, the Special Editions came out in 1997 after Episode I had already entered production. The SEs had ZERO to do with seeing if people would be interested in the sequels. Zero.
Good thing I never tried to identify all the actors, so for most of the film, it didn't occur to me that the queen and the 'handmaiden' were played by the same actress. XD Makes it much less confusing. Also, I never tried to figure out if something on screen was made with special effects or not. Could be that I'm used to the rougher special effects from my childhood, so the newer ones never bothered me.
Part of a Jedi's training is knowing how to construct their own lightsaber. It's not something that is just issued to them. So if a Jedi didn't have dual blades, it's because they preferred to construct theirs as a single blade.
There was much hype surrounding this movie mainly because there had been so much demand for more Star Wars content and it had been such a long time. The re-release in theaters of the Special Editions of the original trilogy also built a lot of hype, so I think a lot of original fans and newer fans lacked some objectivity with regard to these films. Yet there were some things in this movie that had fans cringing and scratching their heads (the inclusion of Jar Jar, the midichlorians BS, the wooden acting, etc). Lucas wrote and directed all three of these movies himself rather than hiring a screenwriter for the script and giving the job of director to someone else. Lucas is nothing if not a fantastic visionary, but as a director, he does a poor job of gleaning the emotional performance out of his actors. Consequently, this film was devastating to the careers of Jake Lloyd (young Anakin) and Natalie Portman (Padme). Lloyd went on to suffer from depression and drug problems because of all the hate he got from the fans, and it took Portman a long time to get past the stigma of playing Padme before she was able to prove she could be taken seriously as an actress. Having an icon such as Liam Neeson brought enough gravitas to the film that it was able to salvage an otherwise mediocre story.
Enjoying your trip through Star Wars. The Jedi and the Sith are, in simlest terms, organizations of force users. Jedi representing the light side, Sith the dark side. There are, however, force sensitives/users who are neither Jedi or Sith. To go deeper into it, the clone wars animated series is actually a good source of lore. You can also check out massive amounts of literature that makes up what used to be known as the expanded universe in novels and guide books. The Timothy Zahn Heir to the Empire trilogy/series is my favorite. Anyway, cheers.
anikin destroying the command ship was not really an accident, as much as it seems that way. he is super strongin the force, and the force guided him even though he was not aware of it
You actually followed the movie really well! Way to go! Be prepared for a jump in time of about 10 years for the next movie. Hope you like it. Darth Maul's species is Zabrak the tattoos on his face are ritual tattoos related to the culture of his species. There is no great mystery about them apart from that he's not the only Zabrak that has them.
Great job, thank you for this review. I like hearing different perspectives. Really , though this is an acknowledgment of the great things I feel about this movie. so many people put down this movie over the years and it hurts a little bit because I connected with this movie. That made me think that something was wrong with me for liking it, anyway thank you for acknowledging it the way that you did.
So Luke got the green saber in Episode 6. Vader comments on it, saying his skills are complete due to the construction of his own saber. He did get the instructions on how to do so from Obi-Wan's hut on Tatooine though. If you slow down the joyful, happy, upbeat victory moment at the end of this movie, youll hear it is actually a sped up version of the dark Throne Room music that was playing just before Luke and Vader fought in Episode 6. It's a foreshadowing of the upcoming dark times that we see in the Original Trilogy.
They tried a traditional puppet for Yoda to maintain the look and feel of the Yoda the older fans knew and loved, but it wasn't working out as well as they'd hoped. That's why they switched to full CGI for all of Yoda's scenes. Also, Darth Maul's origin and motivations are revealed in greater detail in the 'Clone Wars' and 'Rebels' animated series which are set between Episodes 2 and 3.

I thought that the puppet made him look older. I'll have to check it out again, lol

Ooooh that makes sense! Thank you! 🤍

You're mostly not wrong and neither is she.
Even as an OT fan I still like these prequel films - I hope you enjoy them.

Do you really think Obi-Wan couldn't control his emotions?
@@jeffburnham6611 yes of course, you literally can see anger in his face, more than that in certain moment in the Clone wars show he and one other character talks about it and that conversation make Obi angry

In honor of this film's 25th anniversary, you did this reaction well. Great job, Quokka.
I believe that part was ruined for most of us as it was in the trailer

That's such misdirection. This film is rightly caned for huge over-reliance on CGI. It's why it holds up so poorly (compared to, for example, Lord of the Rings). Even the actors acknowledge this.
@@RonanS88 almost as much as it is to imply the quantity of the cgi is the problem
39:26 This is why:
Despite all of the advantages offered by the weapon, its weaknesses were equally obvious.

Prequels Hype! :D
39:40 - "Why haven't the Jedi thought of the double lightsaber": Remember that the Jedi are peacekeepers, not warriors.
Oh yeah.

Not sure if this was mentioned previously since I haven’t read all the comments but one thing to remember about the fights and force use is that this is the republic and the Jedi at their height of power. 30:25 Yes, Anakin is feeling what any other child would feel in his situation. But he has the ability to kill people with a thought. Notice him doing that in Empire Strikes Back.
32:30 No. This will help:
“The core of the Force-I mean, you got the dark side, the light side, one is selfless, one is selfish, and you wanna keep them in balance.

"I Don't Know The Time Difference Between The Prequels And The Original Trilogy"
Well, episode I was 30 years before episode IV and episode II is 10 years after episode I
AWESOME REACTION OF MY FAVORITE STAR WARS!!!!!!!!!!!😊😊😊😊😊😊😊
Loved it. Great work 💙
4:55
"Also, Who's That Actor?, He Looks So Familiar"
Since you didn't specify which Actor you were referring to:
The actor who played Obi-Wan is Ewan McGregor and the other actor is Liam Neeson
Hello there, I loved watching your reaction of the OT. Just so you know (without getting into spoilers lol), a lot of your interpretations were actually 100% correct. Hope you enjoy the Prequels!
Two of my favorite Qui-Gon Jinn lines in this movie are:
"The ability to speak does not make you intelligent" (So useable for so many people in real life)
"There's always a bigger fish"
Fun fact: Natalie Portman and Keira Knightley looked so identical in their full Queen Amidala makeup and costuming that their own mothers couldn't tell them apart.
when the movie was released Yoda was a puppet but was changed to CGI as the puppet looked too old compared to the puppet used in the original Trilogy as Yoda was supposed to be Younger
Great reaction glad u liked the episode one looking forward to seeing ur reactions to episodes 2 and 3❤
Padmé is The Queen of Naboo and she is 14 years old, Anakin is 9 years old, Obi-Wan is able to defeat Darth Maul when his Master could not, because Obi-Wan was using the Dark Side as he was angry his master was dying and scared for his own Life you can see it in his face when they are fighting
54:41 It sounds like this was a surprise, to be sure, but a welcome one.
Some jedi have used double bladed lightsabers but its very rare.
E.T. broke the Box Office Record in 1982. A New Hope only held it for 5 Years if that.
He was 100% waiting for technology to progress. He has said as much.
Zero.
the shield think. they stop energy, big moving objects and fast moving small objects but not small slow moving ones.
Episode 1 in theaters May 3rd (next week) to celebrate its 25th Anniversary. Watch it on the big screen!
15:27 "Darth Maul looks cool with this face paint."
Not paint.
Tattoos.
His mother tattooed him before his first birthday.
Enjoyed your reaction to the start of your prequel journey
Part of a Jedi's training is knowing how to construct their own lightsaber. It's not something that is just issued to them. So if a Jedi didn't have dual blades, it's because they preferred to construct theirs as a single blade.
My morning is now set, a movie date with IcedQuokka!
Great reaction! I hope you watched the rest of them before posting this because people really like to spoil Star Wars.
Anyway, cheers.
anikin destroying the command ship was not really an accident, as much as it seems that way. he is super strongin the force, and the force guided him even though he was not aware of it
In the senate scene, one of the senate seats is occupied from ET creatures.
You actually followed the movie really well! Way to go! Be prepared for a jump in time of about 10 years for the next movie. Hope you like it.
Note: keep your eyes open for some cameos from the actors who play C-3P0 & Jar Jar, during the 'sports bar' scene. It's really quick, so let's see it you can spot them out if costume!
Have fun. Keep smiling!👍🙂🇨🇦
