It was a super catchy pop tune with that earworm guitar riff and then they hit you with those unexpected multiple guitar solos near the end that puts the song into legendary status.
Every time I've seen that question "What song would you listen to in your convertible cruising on an open desert highway. "Sausalito Summer Nights" has been my answer for decades.
This song with many American city and landmark references and slang to describe our cars and freeways was actually performed by Diesel a Dutch band which shocked me when I learned of this.
When it first came out I also thought it was the Steve Miller Band, bought the single (and around the same time, bought Steve Miller's new album, Circle of Love, haha)
That riff is so cool. I remember when it first came out, it was addicting! "... a shot of premium to boot, dear..." Such a cool lyric capturing the putting around in a jalopy on a road trip.
Thank you thank you thank you for doing this song. Just my opinion but this song is one of the best one hit wonders out there. Have this one on my playlist and listen to it often. This is such a great cruising song.
WOW! Talk about being thrown back in time. I forgot about this great, fun song. This was a catchy tune I was excited to land on while changing the car radio.
I had nearly forgotten this song and so I am glad that you've revived it. Yes, it is a great Summertime song and this is going on my Summer playlist. I did remember the song when I crossed the bridge and went to Sausalito for the first time in the 90s. A great reaction!
Been ages since I heard that song. It could easily be mistaken for Steve Miller and a lot of people did. The guitar players at the time the album was recorded were Rob Vunderink (also the vocalist) and Mark Boon. Both of them wrote the song. According to a quote on Wikipedia that I can't verify, Rob came up with the riff and melody (so presumably he is playing the riff on the track) and Mark came up with some chords, and wrote the lyrics. It's a cool riff and easy enough to play. It's rather similar to the riff in Jet Airliner by Steve Miller.
In fact, both of the guitarists play on it; Mark Boon clean (riff and 1st solopart) guitar Rob Vunderink (raw guitar and 2nt solo) Rob wrote the riff and Mark is playing it on the record. The other members have unfortunately passed away...
Great song! When this song was new I lived in the east and didn’t appreciate the references. Now a Marin County resident and veteran of many drives ‘tween LA and SF, it’s an even more fun song to hear. Although I should warn folks that summer nights in Sausalito are rarely warm. Bring a jacket when you visit!
Donna - What a wonderful submission! I, for one, had not heard this one before. I will be looking into how that happened and much more about Diesel. Beautiful submission and review, Harri!
That riff is irresistible. You dug up another treasure Harri. The band is Dutch!
Driving to the beach with my sisters with the windows down and this song cranking! The 70s were so sweet!!!
70s ? "Sausalito summer nights" wasn't released (internationally) till 1981
@@SolitaryS Album came out in 1980. I'm old and GenX. I don't remember things like I used to! LOL
@@TheGenXTeacherI'm 61yrs. old. I'm right there with you on the memory loss thing. I had to look it up on Wikipedia.
I had forgotten how awesome this song was!! That riff was an earworm back then!! ❤❤
My son who was born in 1991 loves this song. He heard me playing it and instantly fell in love with it. that hook is irresistible.
Haven't heard this for ages. Thank you Donna and Harri.
This song really takes me back. Hard to believe they’re from the Netherlands. The song has such a great American rock n roll feel.
I also loved this guitar riff the first time that I heard it!!

A great song. Brings back nice memories.
Greetings from the Netherlands. 🎸🎶🎶😘🙋♀️
Used to love, love ❤ this song back in the 70s, a really fun song 🎵
Album came out in 1980..
"Find that guitar player and arrest him!" - damn right!
This song with many American city and landmark references and slang to describe our cars and freeways was actually performed by Diesel a Dutch band which shocked me when I learned of this.
Channeling some Beach Boys, and they clearly nailed it.
One of my all time, life-long, favorite songs.
Great song! ❤ Brings me back in time
I spent years thinking this was the Steve Miller Band.
It does sound very much like them!!!
When it first came out I also thought it was the Steve Miller Band, bought the single (and around the same time, bought Steve Miller's new album, Circle of Love, haha)

My fav driving tune as teenager ...& an old man ...had a rockin Alpine stereo in my car in the early 80s before stereos were cool

Great great song. Excellent choice!!!
I have been listening to this song consistently over the last 6 months. First heard this in College and loved it then and now.
Really one of the best Dutch bands!!!
amazing guitar work & bass fills are nasty too
the guitar player is Rob Vunderink (Netherlands) in 1980
Proud to be Dutch for a change
I had this album."Watts in a Tank" . It was a fun listen as I remember.
“Down In The Silver Mine” is a harmony vocal showcase. Love this album!

I ask people if they remember this song and they reply, "No." Sad loss. More for me though!!
Steve Miller hmmm?
First time hearing this band🤔🤷♀️I like it. 💃💃☘️☘️
Yup. First time I heard this, swore it was Steve Miller. And that was when it first came out. Great tune. Brings back lots of summer memories.

There’s a live video out there; should see them do it live. It’s as good or better. Great selection!
It was forever that I always assumed this was a Steve Miller Band song. I didn't find out the actual artist until maybe a decade ago.
This song is so wonderful. Love it!
Nobody talks about it but the guitar solo is fucking insane for such a soft pop groove...
I hear you, that’s exactly why I learned it

Hello little brother , glad to see you’re having fun this fine day.

Its from 1981
Harri, you are chair dancing!😅
Still have the vinyl. Bought it on the strength of this one song.
I always thought this was Steve Miller incognito.
Loved this song when it first came out. Hadn’t recognized the Steve Miller undertones until you said, but you’re 100% correct!
I don't know if this song was in "Coyote Ugly" or not but it would be a great song for women to be dancing on the tables at a bar!
Pretty sure that Diesel is from The Netherlands. Dutch.
Maybe. I always thought they were from the USA.
@@Ilikeryche Nope, they're a Dutch band.
You reacted to this song before btw
Old and forgotten, which is really too bad because it sure does jam
A Dutch band.
This came out when I lived in Santa Clara California and we all loved it!
