Dying Light 1 vs Dying Light 2 | WHICH GAME IS BETTER?

  • Dying Light 1 vs Dying Light 2, Which game is better???? With Dying Light 2 just releasing around a month ago, I figured now is a great time now that I’ve finished and done a lot in the game to compare it with Dying Light 1, as that’s another game I really enjoy and who doesn’t like a little needless competition. Plus maybe I can help some of you decide which game to get, but I’m just gonna save you the trouble. I really like both of these games and I would definitely recommend either of them. But just in case you are new to this series of mine, what I do is take two games from the same series and I compare them in three different categories being story, gameplay, and the world. Now normally I would do individual sub categories with points and all that but for Dying Light 1 and Dying Light 2 I'm going to go with another system. Instead for each category I am going to give each game a rating out of 10, and add up the ratings at the end and whichever game has the highest score out of 30 will be crowned the better game. If you enjoyed the video I'd really appreciate if you considered subscribing we are SO CLOSE to 100k!!! Thanks for watching and have a great day everyone!

The SafeHouse system in DL1 is so much better in my opinion, and they aren’t the same,
in DL2 you find a random sleeping bag under a tarp with a generator and turn it on.
In DL1 you find a closed off area that’s flooded with zombies, you clear it out, shut the door and turn on the power.
Much more engaging than running around and turning on generators on rooftops lol

    • @TuntematonX

Yeah. The first one felt like Techland looked at Dead Island players speeding and ignoring all the zombies and thought: "Lets make a game out of that and still throw the kitchen sink at them and bring the fucked up backstory to the fore."
The second one feels more like the quieter moments in the Metro series except it doesn't feel as impactful as traveling through collapsed tunnels and running your way across the monster and radiation filled surface as the Commies and Nazies slaughter each others, Hansa chills and profits from the independent stations and Sparta tries to keep the craziest shit in check and salvage old tech.
Like in Cyberpunk and most AAAs the factions kind of are there but they don't have gravitas in the worldbuiding.

There should also be a comparison for overall sound design, music, movement, ragdoll physics, gore, atmosphere, lighting, quicktime animations, and enemy design. While DL2 has a better story with more interesting characters, I feel DL1 wins in all the above mentioned categories. DL2 feels like a Walking Dead game. Its comic-booky and vibrant and plays, well, like a video game. Whereas the first one felt grounded and more creepy, especially in some areas where the music got really ominous.

I strongly disagree with the story assessments. I think the characters in DL2 are weaker across the board, and I found the story of the first game to be much more compelling. Also, I think a lot of the movement changes were negative imo, the grappling hook in particular was MUCH more fun in the first game. I also miss using guns, the fact that they attracted infected kinda helped balance them imo. I also hate the new gear system, specifically the fact that you can't upgrade between levels and repair items. It feels shitty to find a cool piece of gear when I'm close to the next level, because I know that within the hour, the item will be useless. There are just a lot of oversights in the second game that make it feel more hollow than the first one to me. The only thing it did better in my opinion is the actual map itself, everything else was better in the first one. I'd give the first game an 8/10, and the second game a 6.5.

I've played the hell outta DL and just finished DL2. Overall, I think original DL is a better game - story is more memorable, fantastic atmosphere, level design is way more interesting, slashing zombies feel much better, crafting system is actually a big part of the game, much better grappling hook mechanics. I can barely remember any special moments from DL2 playthrough, it was very bland. The only things that DL2 has over DL is a better parkour system (although capped behind finding inhibitors) and better graphics. I'm hoping that DLC will bring some life into DL2, but I'm going back to playing the original after the next gen update. Stylistically, DL is superior - way more scarier, much better colours throughout, night time is actually challenging. I expected way more out of DL2 and felt let down. 7 years between games, not much innovation & a lot of downgrades. it's a 6/10 game at best, while DL is 8/10. Highly recommend waiting for sale on DL2 and grabbing the original for a fraction of a price (it goes on sale all the time)

The reason why the combat feels heavier and so much different in 1 than 2 is because 2 is animation based. 1 is physics based.
In 2, it's based purely on programming. In 1, the action takes into account physical objects, npcs included.
Thats why, if you notice, volatiles in 2 won't fall off a ledge of they lunge at you, instead hitting an invisible wall.

The only things I didn't love at all about DY2 is most of the stuff shown in the E3 trailers back in 2018 and 2019 has either been removed or changed (by change I mean not for the best). I don't mind the removal of guns or the setting being green too much but the horror element and artstyle for DY2 really put it off for me. Not once in DY2 did I ever feel like I was in any real danger or had to pause the game to actually think what my next move would be due to the horrible situation I might've put myself in (in DY1 it was the night time with Volatiles swarming around everywhere). It's not a bad sequel but not the sequel I and many others were waiting for 7 years.

I'm confused as to why you would only play DL2 if it had guns. Wasn't the combat in dying light supposed to have a melee focus in the first place? And it's not like you have no ranged weapons at all.
I feel with the 20 year gap it's pretty believable that guns (or ammo) would have been almost entirely used up after so many years of different factions fighting each other.

I believe his opinion is based on that he likes when the apocalypse is just starting in the world and you have to use guns because that’s all you know in a zombie apocalypse. It has something to do with roleplay. He most likely doesn’t the game because its set so far into the future that you are now in a more civilized world then when it was ending.

I loved Dying Light 2, bugs aside it’s an amazing game. Thing is, I am disappointed with how the nights work, one thing I loved about DL1 was how scary the nighttime was, and how amazingly dark it was. DL2 is a bit too colorful and not as scary since Volatiles don’t roam around the streets or roofs anymore. You kinda have to go out of your way to see them. I would suggest that Volatiles roam the streets, and SOMETIMES the roofs of buildings since they are supposed to be the apex predator that murders night runners, ya know?

The lack of guns is a disgrace imo, the fun thing about them was having to chose when to use them or not. They do more damage and give you range, but at the cost of allerting everyone in the vicinity.
Its about having the option, they can add a paraglider and chicken suit, but not a handgun?
They could have also just reduced ammo availability, meaning you cant find it in stores, just police/army vehicles and crates.
    Its a huge missed opportunity

Honestly I found the entire safezone system in DL1 much better than in DL2, I liked that each safezone looked different and how you have to clear out, and secure them. In DL2 though, you've just gotta turn on a generator or climb a windmill 30+ times just to unlock a social hub that basically all look the same. On that note, I like Harran WAY more than Villedor, while being smaller, it is far more detailed and diverse, but in Villedor, it's just a HUGE, copy pasted, repetitive open world. I could pretty much always tell where I was in DL1 just by looking at the road or the buildings, but in DL2 I have to constantly look at my map to properly find my way back to POIs.

My biggest problem with DL2 was the introduction of enemy health bars and levels... It really takes the edge out of the game... In Dying Light 1, you had no idea how strong something was or how close you were to something actually staying dead, which constantly kept you on your toes. In DL2, you just check the health bar, which can easily tell you, if it's safe to go in for that extra swing, which will kill them.
I also really miss the X-ray effect, there was something extremely satisfying about smacking a zombie in the head and watching the skull crack.

Just finished my first play through of 2 and I wish I had set it to hard mode. The game seems a little easy to me by comparison. Especially the end, was far too simple. The art is amazing, but I really liked the island feel. I kinda feel like the swimming was almost pointless in this one. The bugs I encountered where I’d find Easter egg ducks but not be able to pick them up, then come back and they’d be gone wasn’t a delight either. It honestly felt to me they had been making the game, and the CV19 pandemic happened and so they kicked it into high gear and slapped the last 1/3 if not more of the game together to help with hype. I really enjoyed 2 still, but I’m not sure it has the same feel as 1 where sometimes you sign on just to crack some skulls and not even do missions. I have restarted the game in hard mode, to see a different ending, but honestly not as into it as I really liked the ending I got. Kinda found a lot of the combat moves pointless too, would have liked to see that energy go elsewhere. 1 was a 10/10 for me and 2 is a 8/10 do to all the initial bugs (that have mostly been resolved) and feeling too easy. If/when 3 comes out I wouldn’t hesitate to buy it. Can’t wait for some good DLC for 2.

If they added a nightmare mode and nerfed the damage abilities do by a bit it'd feel tougher. I'm on my first DL2 playthru and I've been playing on hard since the start, the fights feel extremely easy. Theres no point in me using my weapons / consumables when my dropkick / dart instakills enemies. Same goes for headstomp which should use way more stamina to balance out the fact it always kills. The immunity should also be more strict on hard diffficulty, once i got to 8 minutes on my immunity timer it was pretty much a non-threat and a pretty useless mechanic, which sucks given that nighttime is already too easy

I's say second part has it's improvements. I love DL2 parkour for example, and paraglider is fantastic thing. The world is big and not empty. But art desing is killing me (buildings are not included, but rooftop plants do). Zombies? I don't remember any of them, I mean how they look exactly. In DL1 even biters felt unique, not some grey trashbags in DL2. I'm not even talking about special zombies. Bomber, toad, bolter, goon, demolisher, screamer. They were unique. And Volatiles, they're scary because they were the ones who spot you, like being spotted by predator looking for their prey, not some screaming howlers, harmless screaming guy, it's like touch the alarm on the car. Yes it means, that danger is coming after you, but you have a time to get out, before owner comes out. I don't mean DL2 special zombies are bad, no, they are good, but in gameplay only(howlers are not included, they are useless) . their Art design is terrible (in comparison with DL1 of course). DL2 is a bad looking girl with screaming bright orange makeup that doesn't suits her (zombie, clothes and plants design, animation impact) , her inner world is quite promising, not great, but good enough (quests, lore, characters, choices and consequences) , but her body and the way she use it is the one of the best things you can experience (gameplay)

I gotta disagree with you about Crane... He wasn't confused about which side he wanted to join... As soon as the GRE decided to give odd quests to him, he automatically wanted to help the survivors and save the city. He also wanted to help Zere and Camden find a cure which is a great purpose.
Hell he even gave away his ticket out of Harran so that he can stay and help the people
Crane was a great protagonist, Roger Craig Smith did a superb job ...
Rais may have been generic yes but his voice acting was great and on point... I was actually glad to know that he was the same voice actor of Angelo Bronte from red dead redemption 2
Dying Light 2 only did the parkour and combat (maybe) better
Dying Light 1 had better story, atmosphere and music
But hey, you can't please everyone I guess

Agreed, Dying Light 1 and 2: Far Cry with Zombies, summed up in a phrase. Which is not at all a bad thing as I love the open ended nature of both of these games, I generally care less about story or quests and just go to exploration. I still find stories good though

Fully agree with this comparison! But I will add that with the guns in Dying Light 1 that the guns ended up ruining the tension of the last parts of the game and ruining every encounter that came after getting a gun, it made the game way to easy and boring. Glad they got rid of guns as well.

    • @snwlvl634

Guns kinda ruined the game for me in general in DL1, the fact I had 30k damage semi-auto shotgun to just say “fuck off” to everything in front of me with was fun but it gets dry and melee weapons don’t lose their fun factor to me

I played a TON of DL1 which I always thought was a lucky find for me. I bought it on my xbone during a discount where it was super cheap and though I hadn't ever heard of it, the description sounded cool so I figured I'd try it out, falling in love with it.
That said, what I've played of DL2 seems to be having the same effect as the 1st, if not a little more. I really like the re-tuned parkour (I know, I'm in the minority), the combat is fantastic, the world design is absolutely beautiful with a killer soundtrack to compliment, and the characters are a little better as well though there is the occasional bland one. Aiden is great, much better than Crane, mostly cause he's not as cringey with his line delivery.
As you state though, they both are fantastic games. Only thing I'm disappointed with is the initial purchase. I bought the deluxe edition thinking it was the base game and season pass, only to find out the season pass is only in the ultimate while deluxe only gives you access to 1 future expansion if I understand correctly.

Personal preference here: My friend and I are playing DL2 co-op. At the moment we like DL1 much better.
First off, there are too many bugs in DL2. We got caught respawning in a room with no exit and couldn't get out - this caused us to restart the game. Several times zombies were attacking us with no life bar so they couldn't be killed. There are times when my friend could access a GRE box and I couldn't because a hatch wouldn't open up - this caused us to go back and replay the area. The game controls don't seem to be as good as the original as we have a much harder time running across cable lines, climbing, etc. It seems like we fall way more than the original game.
I think the map is better in DL1 and doesn't see so "cut and paste" - maybe it's all the plants and tree on top of the buildings in DL2. I love the grappling hook in DL1. The planes dropping supply boxes and racing to get them. There seems to be a lot more lockpicks in the first game and more weapons to find. We spend most of our time on the roof tops in DL2 where in DL1 we spent more time on the street level looking for things.
