@22:20 I disagree with Coleman Hughes about the statutes of limitations. You can't casually compare a mass crime such as slavery to any other corruption committed in 1865. I disagree with his opinion as a reason to use the statutes of limitations to oppose reparations. Why? Back then the legal and political fields of the country were racist and corrupt as a whole. Communities, government, and individuals helped perpetuate racism which in turn helped suppressed and delay reparations in a stubborn, arrogant, and nasty way. So casually saying a mass crime such as slavery and racism is past the statutes of limitations in legal terms you got to ponder some things. First of all, it's the SCALE of the crime on a mass level we are addressing and also the perpetuation of that crime after slavery was abolished. Even though it was abolished, crimes against the dignity of those people were in a perpetual state of racial tension and distress that lasted for generations. Also, we are addressing the restorative nature, that was deliberately delayed by white supremacists (past and present). If a man can't see It was their intent to use the statutes of limitations to get away with this crime and avoid paying for the use of free slave labor...then that man is a blind man to the subversive tactics white supremacists use on black Americans several times over generations.
The statue of limitations was written in the 14 amendment. Section 4 of the 14 amendment says that the federal government will not be liable for slavery
@@ShockwaveSoundwave-z2m Even if you were right about the government not being liable for slavery (because it says so in the amendment)...It would be a fickle contradictory arrangement. Why? Because if you say that African Americans were awarded citizenship, then What about the OTHER AMENDMENTS that were not honored by the American federal government in the treatment of ADOS after slavery? I say not honored as they allowed things to happen and sat idly by as white mobs, racist individuals, and white supremacist groups, at state and local levels treated black people like garbage and were never brought to justice. There are too many amendments that were broken, or personal boundaries of African Americans that were crossed by white supremacists and bigots that governed with legal and political power. Remember Jim Crow? That was a shameful incident in history that got your opinion looking like a contradiction. Many other things were done to African Americans during, but specifically, AFTER slavery that was unconstitutional and contradicted some of the Amendments based on ADOS treatment in America. Even if you were half right about the 14th amendment, Jim Crow laws and racist horrific treatment of black Americans AFTER slavery was unconstitutional and didn't honor all the other amendments. You know it. The point you made about the statutes of limitations that are somehow in section 4 as a clause to keep America from being responsible to pay the debt of slavery only proves my point that I disagree with Coleman Hughes in the video above. American government back then intentionally put that there for a reason...Yet when it comes to paying reparations or compensation to other groups of people in America that went through distress such as The Japanese, Native Americans, and other groups there is no problem. Why are Black Americans getting these delays to be compensated for their legitimate hardships? Therefore, reparations would be owed for slavery and incidents after slavery as they are treatments that targeted the humanity and livelihood of black Americans. Also, it's not a new thing for the Constitution to be revised by Congress.
And he didn't mention the harms that the Crack epidemic caused on the ADOS community's that we are still feeling the effects of!! Thank you Mic'2023 ps if Coleman doesn't like the idea of reparations, he can opt out!!

This is ignorant. Some Blacks owned slaves. Many other nationalities have also served basically as slaves or indentured servents. How about indentured textile workers who burned in fire in unsafe buildings? MANY immigrants arrived AFTER slavery ended - inculding Blacks ! How in God's name could you even figure out who is owed and who should pay on such a large scale? Injustice occurs to ALL people. If "the nation" owes any "group" it should be the indigenous people. But how many have not fallen in love with someone of another race and no longer 100% indigenous. The same is true of every other race. So. Forcing the innocent to pay nonvictims for something that happened to neither of them is not reparations. Reparations is actual proven victims being compensated by their actual violators.
Slavery has been a universal institution for thousands of years as far back as you can trace human history. And what we are looking at is if slavery is something that happened to one race of people in one country when in fact the spread of it was around the world. In 1776, which is when Adam Smith published The Wealth of Nations as well as the United States got started,he said that Western Europe is the only place in the world where there is no slavery. And even the Western Europeans had vast numbers of slaves in the western hemisphere but not in Western Europe itself. And so if you’re going to have reparations for slavery it’s going to be the greatest transfer of wealth back and forth because the number of whites, for example, who were enslaved in North Africa by the Barbary pirates exceeded the number of Africans enslaved in the United States and in the American colonies before that put together. But nobody is going to North Africa to ask for reparations because nobody is going to be fool enough to give it to them. These people have to take a chill pill, digest the facts and realities, and move on instead of blaming all their troubles on a stupid idea that someone owes them anything for picking cotton for free.
What does slavery in Europe with caucasians enslaving their own caucasian ppl. That has nothing to do with chattel slavery in America. Even if you just calculate lost wages, there is clearly money owed. If you worked at McDonald's for minimum wage, you know you would demand that they pay you your last check when you quit, right? So what would a "field hand" be paid in 1864? Now, multiply that by a lifetime for their work. So a ridiculously low annual wage, multiplied by 60 or 70. The lifespan can be determined by census records and genelogical studies. Honestly, even if you didn't add interest and punitive damages for the cruel physical punishment visited upon those enslaved workers, those lost wages are a sum of money that no one can dispute. When African slaves were freed, they actively fought for reparations, only to be systematically denied and ignored by those in power at every turn. To suggest that the opportunity was "tragically missed" implies that the enslaved or their descendants somehow failed to seize the moment, rather than acknowledging the relentless resistance and exclusion they faced.
If slaves didn't get paid, so how did 300,000 freemen got their freedom before the civil war?

Black people were asking for reparations in some fashion before 1865. They keep getting ignored.
So. To be fair first you would have to prove a "slave" lineage, loss and percent of ancestry.

We pay native Americans Israel and Ukraine reparations and the US had nothing to do with the holocaust or Ukraine. Where is your opinion on that?

This framing is not only misleading but profoundly insulting.

And we should pay them too..like we did Japanese

Like who ?
Then let those groups make their case for reparations. There has still not even been an official apology for slavery and it's racist aftermath.
I have not agreed to have a "religious leader" represent me in any form or fashion. Religious leaders have no say in this conversion!
No one in this story is Native to this land.
Wait how are pensions being insured like reparations? Agree we can do something reparations but that argument isn’t going to persuade a majority of this country.
Yeah let's not forget about the hundreds of thousands of white boys who fought and died in the civil war to free the slaves. Any reparations for them?
A reminder of that one episode of Dave Chappelle
Trust and believe 50 years from now when the U.S. government opens the roll on the knowledge the government had concerning the vaccine and the harms it would do to americans who some voluntarily and others forced to take the vaccine for work reasons and the government will be discussing a way to repair survivors(children) .
That Dave Chappelle skit dude pulls up with a semi of menthol 😂
I was enslaved by obamacare fines till trump reversed that extortion..when do i get 40 acres and a mule?
YOU CANNOT MOVE FORWARD IF YOU HAVE NOT CONFRONTED THE PAST!!!
This has gotta be a joke bro. I can barely feed myself as it is
Feelings. Who cares about feelings. Just pay for everything you stole.
Wasn't California taken from Mexico? Maybe California should just give the state back.
May as well, nothing but illegal trash piling up in that state.
There's know one truly talking for us. Ask the right people. The black people on the battle field.
To the woman at 13:00 their struggle was not unique, it was simultaneously widespread and targeted
The families that took the land in the beginning now want the people who are fighting for reparations to add them.
Reparations must be calculated from when the first slaves landed. Then reparations should begin plus compounding interest until now.
SO SAD THAT THEY ARE GIVING HOPE TO PEOPLE TO GET REPARATIONS MONEY!!!! OUR COUNTRY AND STATES ARE BROKE!!! WHATS THE SOLUTION INCREASE TAXES ??
WE NEED TO FORGET AND KEEP ON GOING FOR A BETTER FUTURE!!!
We’ve Given Ukraine A Trillion Dollars!! How, Are We Broke?? Chicago FOUND 51 Million, To Spend On Immigrants…..AGAIN…..How Are We BROKE?? We Have Money For FOREIGNERS, But NOT, People Born Here!! Makes No Sense!!!!!
Did You Have That Energy, When Everyone Else Got “REPARATIONS”??
I Think 🤔 NOT!!!!!

Awful presentation.

This subject is probably impossibly complex to fit into 28 minutes. However, it is brave to attempt to start the discussion. Our nation will never heal if we can't face these issues. Just try to really listen. Try.
@@girlfromthebronxbywayofelb7288 maybe you should take a good look in the mirror first, and ask "who's really keeping me down?"
@@dragonknight9016 Please look in the mirror and question your need to prejudge strangers. I am not directly impacted by reparations. However, I know enough U.S. history to understand that chattel slavery is the central scar in our history. We must be brave enough to examine this horror, to discuss it rationally, then roll up our sleeves and do the repair work. Pretending that this is someone else's problem is irrational at best.
Ain’t gonna happen but in the states the Democrats push it through in they are giving the best gift Republicans could ever ask for.❤️
Yup!
😡 REPERATIONS NOW!!!!!!!!
Cornell Brooks a Sterling Young Gentleman Leader.. Thank You
This guy Coleman Hughes can't be serious when he says apologies which Congress and the Senate gave should be enough to heal the wounds from over a hundred and something years of slavery, lynching, Jim Crow Laws ,Black Codes and Mass Incarceration. I understand NBC News wants to differing point of views but to have the opposing view to come from a black person just blows me away. Could he be adopted by a white family so he knows nothing of his history ,the pain and suffering his family experienced all because of the color of their skin or could he be one of those Islanders who don't support reparations because their not descendants of American slaves
We have not Discussed the Prompt Payment Act.Interest can be Charged and Will be Charged.
I don't think Coleman Hughes gets it. A verbal apology from congress is not enough!
What about my indigenous brothers and sister ? We were the the first victims of systemic genocide and colonization!
They were given reparations 22 yrs ago
But-whatism
You’ve got migrants in this country already working. Reparations to Blacks 😂🤣😂🤣
Pay up!
Cash reparations should not happen but investing in job training and education should. #noreparation
100 Trillion would still be insufficient, but the fact we can talk about it is part of healing. You can't authentically say I'm sorry without discussing how you will correct what was done. While we can never make right the wrongs of the past we can allocate money and more importantly effort to a here and now that stops the generational trauma.
Level the playing fields
Exactly. And Canada has already acknowledged and apologized for their harm in Slavery including paying reparations.

Congressmen Kiley said investing in education is the single best thing that we can do, so where is the nationwide call to 'refund public education' by both sides of the political divide? Every day Black children fall further behind in educational ability/achievement while little to nothing is done to change that trajectory. Why haven't all the tradition courses that were taught in public schools been reinstituted, knowing how vital they are to the process of producing well-rounded healthy members of society? Where is the national public campaign to stress the importance of education? Why is even parenting been instituted as a course in schools. It is the most difficult jobs perform, certainly a most important one. Surely, we all can agree on what the basics of good parenting are irrespective of our varying beliefs and ideologies. Why can't first get the gains possible in the areas we can agree on instead of ignoring them just to repeatedly arguing over what we disagree on? Maybe we might find that those gains were a big part of the solution, if not the solution itself.
