Songs in this video: Scar Tissue - 2nd Chorus & Solo
This song is an absolute classic. John during a solo is using a technique which isn't common for him - tapping. It makes this version of the song truly unique.
John Frusciante was my main focus with this and other videos from this concert. More coming soon.

It's great to see how he can play fast and use licks and pull-offs that are usually overplayed by most guitarists, but not for the sake of "being fast" or virtuoso - kind of a corny religion for a lot of guitar players.
His leads are about the music, the show, the feeling at the moment. It's hard to measure how much he's doing to redefine what is to be a guitarist, even if he doesn't care that much about it - because art is his point. Anyway, Frusciante is a legend!

I said once and I said it again, John is probably at his peak as far as guitar performance and improv means. It really looks like he never quit guitar but instead all these years he was only perfecting himself. So much technical resources added to his arsenal that just help him to express his ideas even better. Now he's using the perfect mixture of amazing phrasing, less sticking to the same patterns (which was something I'd critique a lot even if I love him as an artist and guitar player) and variety of resources. This is definitely John's best guitar playing era, period.

As a huge JF I actually have to disagree. Peak live JF was stadium arcadoum tour.
Too me he still seems to be finding his footing. While his ear and ideas are better than ever you can see his hands are not there. He lacks the fluidity and stamina that he had before. I wonder if it's age or just not your ready. He's much better than when he started. Tho I fear he is trying to live up to his old expectations of what a frusciante performance should be instead of embracing where his is now. Even his body looks tense when he plays.
In californication era he was not as talented but embraced the minimalism. He will get there feeling loose again. Still love him

@@awogbob I was talking about guitar performance and improv, not really about stage presence. But yeah, I've noticed the same as you, it's very curious actually. Me and a friend of mine came to 2 possible conclussions: he possibly has a physical problem that makes him unable to move as intense as he used to. Or as you said, he's still trying to get used to it again. I think those 2 are the most possible scenarios, any of them, he'll get through it :)

Obviously not going to be a popular comment here but I've never liked this aspect of John's playing. It's messy, often out of tune and time, and he doesn't really have the chops to make it sound interesting. He's just not a shredder and his playing is much better when he's playing melodically or trying some weird shit.
His rhythm playing will always remain top tier though.

That's not tapping. It's a pull-off sequence (which is part of tapping as by EVH).
Tapping requires tapping (yeah) the fretboard in the correct fret (which will usually vary from one musical phrase to another, although it depends on how the song is written) with your picking hand's index or middle finger (traditionally) to attack (to commence) the first note of the musical phrase. It sounds similar though because tapping (as by EVH) engages the same pull-off and open string sequence (as we can see here) right after, just to repeat it again and keep it turning, giving you that particular feeling (which is kind of the objective of these different approaches), but instead of attacking with the pick the note you're fretting with the other hand (like here) you start the musical phrase by tapping on a particular note/fret and pulling off that very tapping finger and then the others very rapidly, just the same as here (pretty much), though giving you another note per sequence and therefore more flexibility to construct phrases.
So basically, t's not the same technique, alhtough I admit it can sound very much the same depending on how it's implemented and how you write around it. Tapping is really hard to master (some people have more affinity with the technique and the style than others, though).
Regardless, Frusciante plays tapping (a modest tapping though, two fingers, not a super-efficient choice in my opinion, since you can get that with your left hand alone in hammer-on/pull-off sequence and be more consistent -at least IMO-) in the famous Don't Forget Me at La Cigale, France, for anyone who wants to see. And otherwise, you can check EVH play Eruption, to get a feel of what tapping is in full display.

It must be a real painstaking venture to have to perform with such an egotistical tone deaf front man like Kiedis. The man is insufferable. Imagine if Frusciante was collaborating with an actual singer/artist what we would have musically. It could be awe.
Not only that.. Chad clearly cut John off here. It's almost as if the rest of the band wants to diminish his talent because it will make them look like less of a musician. He clearly wanted to continue and was about to get into it and Chad cut it. You can see John's reaction. He is being held back with the Chili Peppers but sadly isn't noticed without them. I feel bad for his predicament.

I’ve been watching his playing a lot with the recent shows. He sounds amazing but I notice some struggle with his fretting hand alot on the fretboard (although he finds and hits the note) and he stretches his hand a lot during the shows. Maybe arthritis?

He's also started to hang his guitar a little bit higher than he used to. Now it's closer to his chest and it shows

I think it comes down to being rusty. He really wasn't playing guitar much for the last 10+ years, that's gonna take a while to get the technique back. You can see the ideas are definitely all still there at least!

@@Lewiiiiiiiis I agree, playing guitar standing up is a skill in and of itself.

@@Lewiiiiiiiis That’s actually not true, he never stopped practicing his entire time away from the band. He’s said that multiple times in interviews. I know what rusty John sounds like and this is not it lol

why do i think that frusciante i wack ? maybe being 10 years in electronic music made him rusty ... his solos are out of touch and nothing special from the new album...really dissapointed with him
