Replacing luggage wheels TravelPro Crew 5

  • (Sorry for the bad camera work -- first tutorial video.)
I had some trouble with the wheel kit. The screw heads on the kit axle are about 1 mm too thick (high) and when I jammed the assembled wheel housing into the main housing, the plastic was distorted. Instead, I used the original axle from the TravelPro. But the lights wouldn't light, or not very well. So I put 1/4" washers on either side of the wheel to help the wheel housing squeeze the wheel's hub so the generator works and lights the LEDs.
I got the lighted wheels from Amazon, ASIN number B00CXWRKO2. You can search that number to find other vendors.

Very helpful video on removing the wheel units with a single screw for each, thank you! Wished I found it before removing the entire assembly, but at least I stopped at just one before finding your video.

Thanks, I bought replacement wheels from the same Amazon vendor for my Crew 5, and luckily the plastic flanged bushings that shipped with my new wheels did for me what your washer trick did for you. Your video helped a lot in speeding up the time it took me to replace my wheels.

Thank you so much! Took me 10 leisurely minutes to make my 20 year old carry on like new again! I have a Travelsport Crew5, swapped in new 76MM wheels from amazon like magic. I used Gekufa Luggage Suitcase Replacement Wheels 76mm ~ $10!

Thank you for this video Norm. I used different wheels (i.e., Luggage Wheel Set - 76mm Wheel Size from Amazon.)
Two specific pieces of information you provided saved me a lot of time and avoided having a frustrating experience.
First was the fact that only only one screw needed to be removed per wheel. Prior to looking at your video, I was trying to take the two screws beneath the wheel off because visually, it looks like it's all part of a single housing. Those two screws do not come out (i.e.,, they spin in place ), and I was left scratching my head regarding what to do next.
Second was the fact that, when putting the wheel housing back on, the bottom edge of the housing needs to go underneath the "frame" (for lack of a better word). I tried this on my own first without looking at that part of your video and was stumped. Once I placed the edge underneath, it snapped in with very little effort aside from using a screw driver to briefly expand the space to allow the axle to get in the "frame'.
Thanks for taking the time to put the video together. Much appreciated.

Quick comment to add, I bought the 76MM but that wheel is smaller than even the original worn-out one. Looks like it will work but I would go with a larger wheel than 76mm.

Very helpful video, thanks. One might consider using a somewhat smaller wheel for the replacementl., maybe 70mm. or even 65mm. diameter. With the original , clearance at the wheel well is minimal and relatively small debris can jam the wheel, causing it to drag. While not a serious problem on carpet or smooth flooring, the wheel quickly will develop a flat spot when dragged on rough pavement.

Are there particular wheels to buy for the Crew 5? Is Amazon the best place to make this purchase?
