"Those Indians..." Were protecting a way of life from rapacious invaders who mostly gave them no respect and often wantonly killed them, took away their natural sustenance and starved them on reservations and removed them from their homeland, and dishonored treaties,
Thanks for another adventure enjoyed vicariously ....👍👍

Brett, your ride through where a lot of Apache history took place reminds me of where I grew up as a young boy. I lived in Tucson a few miles from old Ft Lowell before it became a park. The adobe walls were still there. There was a big desert behind my house with a few arroyos, a great place to explore. After a big rainstorm I would slowly walk along the edges and find pieces of painted pottery and old military rifle casings, likely from the fort. It seemed to me as a kid that since these finds were fairly concentrated to one small area that perhaps this was a target practice range where the targets was pottery garnered from nearby a trading village. What a fabulous area to wander as a kid. Today, it is a massive hospital facility with acres of parking lots. I envy your treks on old Agnes. Enjoy them while you are able or permitted.

There's is so much history in and around Tucson that not many realize. I'm from Michigan but my parents moved to Tucson in 1977. I love the history it has to offer like the iron door mine in the Santa Catalina mountain that has yet been found.

I live near there. I can imagine how great your memories must be. Been in Tucson almost 37 years and have seen many changes. Doesnt feel a lot like the Old Pueblo any more. So urban and lots of tall buildings now. Also a very Socialist govt now. Still enjoy desert and surrounding mountains. The best to you and your family.

I live in Kansas and our most notorious stage route was the BOD Butterfield Overland Despatch, it ran from Junction City in eastern Kansas west to Denver, it followed the Smokey Hill River, basically a little south of I-70 now days. It was a very dangerous trip by stage with the Cheyenne and Arapahos working it at certain times of the year, it slowly dissolved as the Kansas Pacific railroad made its way west along the trail. The Smokey Hill Trail had all the western legends traveling it Custer and the seventh guarded and traveled it, Buffalo Bill, Bill Cody, all the old western legends traversed it. Now it's all wheat fields and sleepy little towns and farms, in its hay day it was stage stops every twenty miles, the route for the Pikes Peak gold rush, the SantaFe trail crossed it at Great Bend. The Forts were Fort Rielly, Fort Harker, Fort Zarah, Fort Hays, Fort Larned, Fort Wallace. Hard to imagine what a hardship it was to get to Denver back then.

Cooks canyon starts from the spring and goes directly west and comes out at Pony Hills..The next stage stop was Mimbres, a onetime community at the crossing of the Mimbres River and the next stage stop was at Cow Springs...I'm a local history nut..lol

In the days of Victorio by Eve Ball is a good book on the warm springs Apache. From Mexico to West Texas up to present day mescalero reservation back to the black range were many battles. Mostly the gila forest south. Like one of the comments below they were fighting to survive. Bad things on all sides. A great movie good be done about the victorio war. Far more interesting than Geronimo.

It’s been 40 years since I’ve been in that country. I live close enough that I need to go back. I knew a 103 year old ranch woman, that her and her family were attacked coming into Ft Cummings. The Apache shot one of the lead horses out of the team, her dad jumped and cut the traces , and started running with the rest of the team. Her mother laid down enough lead to keep em at bay. Out of nowhere came a Army patrol and saved there butts. Her decedents , and both her sisters decedents are still around now. You know some of them.

Having traveled that area while stationed at Holloman AFB in Alamogordo I can't help but recall a similar conflict though in Cookes Canyon which was in the Arizona Territory at the time but now part of Luna County, NM. This battle you cite was in 1879 which shows nothing was learned from Cookes Canyon Massacre in 1861 which was a conflict between the CSA and Chiricahua Apaches.

😂 at the last comment...yeah you and me both! Would've been great to see more artifacts, or traces of the history that happened there.

I enjoyed riding with ya today. I used to enjoy going with my grandpa Gene O’Dell was his name. He had ranches all over New Mexico and Arizona.

Great video So much history in those hills as only certain routes had adequate water 💦 and resources to allow passage from river valleys and mountain 🏔️ ranges
From the earliest inhabitants through time to the present day the movement of populations continue
Thanks for capturing the essence of the desert which is seemingly empty and devoid of life yet in reality is teeming with life
Those who dwell in deserts become acutely aware of our limitations and resourcefulness thereby becoming much more appreciative of the other life zones in our wonderful world 🌍 🌎
