That actually helped me a lot! I just started using The Ordinary products and got so scared when my skin suddenly got a lot worse. I thought that the product wasn’t for me, or even worse, I was allergic to it. Keep in mind, I started using it about 2 days ago. So this definitely helped me a lot, because nobody - and I mean NOBODY talks about this, so I thought that my skin will become so much better immediately when I started my first skin care routine. Wow, thanks a lot! 😊😊😊

Marija Martinovic I’m still using it and the reactions definitely went away! My skin has never been this hydrated and smooth... Although one specific product really irritated my skin: salicylic acid 2% masque. My skin is probably too sensitive for this type of acid, so every time I used it my skin got inflamed and red like crazy. I’m definitely not a skin expert, but if you have severe reactions after using the product, or really suspect an allergy, the same stuff happens over and over again it’s probably better to try something new. But I’m definitely not qualified to say that 😂😂 let me know how it goes for you! 🥳😊

The areas where I wasn't erupting before as insanely smooth and luminous. I'm two weeks into the purge. Another way you can tell it isn't a normal breakout is by the length of time the new breakouts last. Purge pimples will go away in a few days, an opposed to 5-8 for normal acne. I would suggest finding out your skin type first before choosing products. Then when introducing products, do that one by one when starting a routine and start with the basics like a cleanser, then add in a moisturizer and then a sunscreen. When you find the right combination of those products for your skin, the add in a toner (after cleansing) or a serum but remember a toner and serum are not essential, especially for teen skin. Even if all these skincare gurus are doing using the extras, like toners, essences and serums etc, remember they are older.

Thank you sooo much for the skincare science!! I'm definitely guilty of being impatient when it comes to purging vs breaking out- my skin is sensitive so I naturally assume i'm just breaking out and then quick using the product a few days later! This is the first time i'm holding out on a product which is TO's Niacinamide (saw a couple of people on here say the same) and while i'm not breaking out all over, i've gotten an active blemish or a few every other day. So not MAJOR but still something. I'll give it another week or 2 before I make my decision! ♥

This helped me understand so much! I literally have been on TH-cam for the last 2 hours looking at skincare routines thinking am I supposed to do that? Will that work? Because I woke up this morning with skin peeling from my new prescription acne solutions I started like 3 days ago, and I was seriously thinking “okay this isn’t working” but when you explained purging and giving a product especially a prescription it’s 28 day chance to work I was like omg I never knew that! I wish my dermatologist explained that science of the skin to me that it’s just everything coming up, like the worst before better thing you said. Thank you for making these videos and helping my acne prone anxiety lol. I feel better and will stick with my routine and see how I look after the purging. :)

Great video Cassandra as always. I hope you've had an uptake on that patch testing video. I was watching another youtuber using the AHA BHA Peel from the ordinary the other day and they had done it WITHOUT patch testing. She said that it really burner her skin within seconds and hurt badly (may have been overstatement as her skin had no redness next day by the looks of it). A lot of her viewers had the same reaction and stopped but after watching her video they were all talking about tolerating the burn for the after effects. I commented on almost every one of those comments with a recommendation that they visit your video on patch testing before doing it. It seemed to me like they were all reacting badly but ready to go again. I told them that their face could explode in blisters if it's too harsh so I really and truly hope that they have checked out the video first instead of marring themselves for life with a strong acid. I'm a week into skincare today. My face is starting to come up in little red patches (not itchy or irritating - didn't know they were there until I looked in the mirror) but I think that's actually from facial hair removal and not the treatments. However, I've been watching so many of your videos I was expecting a purge so didn't freak. That's why I love your channel. Even at my age (nearing 50) I'm still learning so much. Thank you so much Cassandra. You've really been a beacon of information for me in learning how to look after my skin and what it needs. As we say here in Ireland - you're a wee star and don't ever let anyone tell ya different!

I'm so happy I came across this!! I've been using The Ordinary's niacinamide and I'm not 100% on it just because I don't know if I'm purging or breaking out. I use it every PM along with my tretinoin to treat my acne and it seems to work thanks to the tretinoin, but I don't know if my skin likes niacininamide. I used it once alone without the tretinoin and I started to some acne. The other comments here mentioned niacinamide breaking them out, but they stuck through and it worked. Katy C For TO's, it lasted 3 weeks for me to the point where I had to use it every other night. I'm currently trying The Inkey List's niacinamide and I feel my skin loves this version more than TO's, but I still get small breakouts (not as much as when I was using TO's). However, the breakout could also be from wearing a face mask during this covid era since it traps in oil and moisture which my acne-prone skin is not loving.
Overall, I'm relying on patience right now before discarding niacinamide completely from my routine. I know it's a skincare favorite ingredient and I do see some improvements. Hopefully in another month I can have a more definite stance.

I went to color my hair in November, hairdresser freaked out, sent me to the doctor's all my blood work was normal, was placed in hair vitamins 3x per day, and I opted to do Keratin and go straight. Since now I was not curling my hair as much, hair loss, breakouts in scalp and itching diminished, except I was opting to curl it once in awhile in the last month and the matting begun IMMEDIATELY, itching, and luckily for me and many.... the shitstorm broke - and I am so glad it did!!!!!!! I am 6 days in of NO DevaCurl, and intense treatments - and YES my hair feels so much smoother, curls are starting to bounce, and no itching!!!!!!!!

It takes 28 days for skin to renew, sometimes 6-8 weeks or 2 months for the purging to last. Patience is key. But it's your skin, your choice. ☺️

I used salicylic acid from April till June this year and just stared again a little over a week ago. The first time I started I didn’t notice it getting worse but my skin was already worse than it had ever been before. Right now it’s about as bad as it was in March and April. My skin didn’t start breaking out till my second use of the acid which was 5 days after my first use. I’m also getting a little bit of acne on my chest and back (where I didn’t put any acid) but it’s not uncommon for me to have random breakouts there. My acne is all over my face but it’s the worst on the right side of my face specifically my cheek(that side of my face is usually worse but not this part of my cheek). The pimples are tender and red they are relatively flat for their size, most don’t have any visible pus and the majority don’t have a visible head. I just started my period which could be the cause but that doesn’t usually effect my skin much. I have been sleeping better than usual but I have been more stressed than usual this past week. If anybody knows what I should do please help. I’m also in my early teen years if that makes a difference. Thank you to anyone who took the time to read this even if you can’t help I still appreciate it.

Cerave is doing this to me right now. I'm using both the cleanser and moisturizer, which had me worried af. I'm thinking of switching to Garnier if my skin does not improve in 28 days. Thank you for the vid that gave me this insight 💖😭👍

Lord, finally, someone who created a legit differentiation of skin purging and acne. Thank you so much, Cassandra.
I actually had a purge using AHA serum, and after that, my skin is now glowing. Will try the Ordinary: Niacinamide. Does anyone experience purging too?

Kristine Rico hi :) I've actually just started using the Lactic Acid Peel from the Oskia brand, it's just been a week and some new whiteheads have appeared and it's so frustratinggg, they're not painful at all tho but I guess this is jus part of the process :(

émilie jolie thats already give it a few weeks. That means your skin is pushing out all the dirt. I switched to The Ordinary Niacinamide today. Hoping to have a better result.

This was a really great and informative video, I started using Lush products last year october and it broke me out constantly for 2 months, I kept thinking it was purging (it wasn't) and the moment i stopped, my skin started healing! I recently started using Niacinamide and got a bit worried that my skin is going to become a mess again but this video really put me at ease :D i even remembered to patch test lol
