Thanks Chris, I watched your video this morning and this afternoon I split a 16 inch 6 ft cherry trunk. worked just like you showed us. Pretty cool for an old dude to be wailing a sledge and get those results. See post on Unplugged Woodworkers Group on Facebook where I give you credit for showing the method.
Good stuff, Chris. Inspired by your adventures, I tried to split an elm log a while back. That didn't go so well. The interlocking grain kicked my keister! I'll try cherry, next. Keep the videos coming!
It sometimes can help to score the whole width of the cross section with a wedge to influence the splitting favourably and directly start with two wedges there. Also there are good, heavy nylon hammers in the 4-6 pounds weight range (e.g. by Thor) that will not mushroom over metal wedges. It's probably easier to replace the nylon cap than restore the wedge.
Great vid. Very informative! The only critic I have is that splitting logs on the dirt ground might soften your hammer blows due to a sponging effect of the dirt. But your the one out there splitting logs, so do it your way. )
Hey how about a series on a greenwood chair? Maybe something for the wife’s table.2-3 parts a little more in-depth then usual? Love the vids keep it up!
I don't understand what you did with the knots. Did you put the wedge right in the middle of the knot, or to one side so as to go around the knot? Thanks. Merry Christmas!
@@ChopWithChris Thanks mate, you've moved me to a subscription with such a fast reply, i'm going away tomorrow too, and really wanted that information, thankyou.
Thanks, this is exactly what I need. I've got three logs of cherry in the wood shed waiting to be split. How long has the wood been sitting before splitting? Is it better to split immediately or wait a year or more?
Dear Chris, is it better to split a log fresh (green) or after it has dried out? I ask because a rowan log (mountain-ash) "fell into my lap", which is too large for me to saw with the equipment I have access to right now. I therefore plan on splitting it using your method. Yet, I wonder if it is better to split the log while it is green or if I should wait until it has dried out more. What would you suggest?
Great question! You should split it now because the log will rot from the inside out since it’s so full of moisture. Just Anchorseal the ends to reduce checking.
Would love to see that. I need to remove an oak tree from my yard and thought it might make a good bench top but can’t find any vids on splitting slabs.
I find the crotch wood pieces split better from the fat end. Of course, I've only recently started having success getting a split to stay straight. Usually, it would veer off and leave something closer to a 70/30 split at one end instead of the 50/50 that I started with.
Dear Truck Dealers, Please give this man a pickup truck in exchange for some free advertisement and perhaps a hand carved sign for your business. I’ll gladly trade myself in as well. Sincerely, The station wagon
I agree on the security part. Not so long ago a metal part flew throught my leg. Also, keep the children away. But you should probably try a heavier hammer with a longer handle, it would be easier.
Chop With Chris I can understand that :D yet you can still be accurate with a long handle with proper technique, in my experience (which is limited to splitting firewood and an ugly dovetail i made after you revealed my passion for wood)
Nice video, Chris.
You have explained the splitting of the logs very well and showed great how to do it.
+Günter Schöne Thanks
Thanks for covering this! Just what I was looking for

Glad it worked for you and thanks for the shout out.
I am constantly amazed by your moxie, Chris. Nicely done.
+Cammie's Garage Its the only way. 😄👍🏻
Most informative...it tells me more than that chapter in Firefox vol. 1 does. Now all I need is a sledge, two or three wedges, & plenty of ibuprofen.
+Mr. Schechter Yep
Just bought a house with a lot of trees. This was GREAT!!!
Have fun!
Thank you! Very informative and fun to watch!

Awesome! I always wanted to see in detail the method that you used to split the logs.

+fryefoto Oh man. Elm is the worst! Don't get discouraged.
That's what I learned, the hard way! By the way, thanks for the tip on cleaning up the mushroomed ends of wedges.

Hey how about a series on a greenwood chair? Maybe something for the wife’s table.2-3 parts a little more in-depth then usual? Love the vids keep it up!
+Tyler Jenkins Thanks. You know I did a pretty detailed video building a rocking chair. Have you seen that?
+Tyler Jenkins I am going to build and carve a 3 headed dragon throne.
Yessir I did watch the chair, however I was meaning something like a ladder back chair. I look forward to the throne!
+Tyler Jenkins 👍🏻
Thanks Chris that was awesome. Do you sharpen your wedges? Also any chance you could do a drawknife sharpening video you really like to see that
+Cody Bryant Thanks yes, I will do a video on draw knife sharpening.
I wondered the same thing about sharpening the wedges. Seems like it would be helpful.
+Cody Bryant I really would sharpen them.
i love the last scene ... hahaha
+Peter Hendriks All for you.
Good job
Thanks!

Go to one side of them but as close as you can.
Great video. Very informative. Chris, if you had to buy 4-5 new wedges which brand, shape would you buy? Not sure if there is a gold standard.
Not sure of the brand names. I just buy what offered at the flea markets. You can get them at hardware stores. I’m sure they all work well.
Love good riven lumber!
+Wood By Wright I remember you asked me about this so that motivated me to make the video.
That's cool I haven't consider that approach.
+Evan Dunville 👍🏻
THIS is why they invented Chainsaws... This man is a BEAST!!!!
I just enjoy doing this by hand.
can this be done starting with wooden wedges bro... and buy the way the video was clear, and very well edited and excellently explained, cheers.
Thanks and wooden wedges work as well.

maililistaalterego better to split green
+maililistaalterego Green wood splits easier but make sure you seal the ends to prevent checking.

@@ChopWithChris I will split it now then. Thank you for your advice. I appreciate it very much :-)

A lot of work with that method. I have some ash trees that have to come down. I may try it.
+Jim Dockrell Ash splits really well. Good luck.
I don’t see any videos on TH-cam that take the next step…is it possible to split again down the length to yield a slab? Vs a quarter?
Absolutely!
Would love to see that. I need to remove an oak tree from my yard and thought it might make a good bench top but can’t find any vids on splitting slabs.
I actually did slab out a 4’ oak tree but that footage won’t be out for a long time. I used about 20 metal wedges and 6 big homemade wooden wedges.
thank you . i did wonder how that was done . interesting
+Walter Rider 💪👊
Great tips for a knothead such as myself! What type of wood do you use for your wooden wedges?
Dan
+Knotheads Cny Whatevet is available so walnut, Hickory, and ironwood
Great video. Then what do you do? How do you make them into boards?
+Dustin Fife Some will be skis and some will be a sitting bench. Already did the sitting bench video and sku video is coming.
Saludos !!!!
+Maximiliano Tonsich Hola
good job,but why do you split them, for firewood ?
Depending on the tree species - bowls or bows
Nice work, thought I was subbed, now I sm
Thanks and welcome!
i split firewood, little bit differen way,use tools with longer handle and more heavy :-)
Makes sense 👍🏻

+RI Bill Those crotches are tricky!
1:35 can I split wood like that with only axe?
Yes
Nice informative video, but why split them instead of sawing them into boards by hand?
+umbalaba I don't need them for boards.
Oh! Well, that explains it :-D
