I'm a straight dude, but he was on of THREE men in 70's and 80's I had a serious "man-crush" on and they were: Prince, MJ, and Andy Gibb. Their femininity was actually very masculine and attractive to women and their music hit that "feminine side" perfectly towards most men (like me) and they made us want to be just like them. Awesome peformers and there will never be the likes of these talents ever again. Such a magical period the 70s/80's were and I miss it so much!🥲
His story is so tragic because he had such a bright future ahead of him. Not just in music, but in hosting tv shows. Everyone loved him and his charisma.
Shadow Dancing spent 7 weeks at #1 in the summer of 1978 on the Billboard Hot 100. As a 10 year old kid back then it was the first album (vinyl) anyone had bought for me. This song was everywhere ! He was huge back then just like his brothers The BeeGees (Brothers Gibb).
There was a rumored controversy that in one of those 7 weeks that Gerry Rafferty "Baker Street" was really in the #1 spot but got robbed due to "Billboard politics" behind the scenes back then.
Andy Gibb was so amazing on his own even though he did get help from his brothers his voice was great! Passed away way to soon but his music will live on forever!
Per Songfacts this song was written by all four Gibb brothers. Andy joined his older siblings Barry, Robin and Maurice for a writing session in Hollywood, where were filming the movie Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band. "We literally sat down and in ten minutes, we had a group going, (singing) the chorus part," Andy recalled in The Billboard Book of Number One Hits.
The Bee Gees sang background vocals in this song. Also Barry Gibb wrote all of Andy's songs. Andy Gibb died 5 days after his 30th birthday on March 10th, 1988.
He was technically not a Bee Gee, he was solo. However, I believe his older brothers were considering bringing him into the group, but his tragic passing put an end to that.
Sadly, Andy's mental health & drug issues did major damage to his health & career. He was dropped by his record label & couldn't get another. Barry then arranged for Island Records to sign Andy, but when he got to London (Jan.88), he panicked & missed meetings, so the deal didn't go through. That's when his brothers announced he would become a Bee Gee, beginning with their next album & tour, but he died before that could happen (March 10, 1988).
@@todd8414 Andy didn't sing on the hit studio recording of You Should Be Dancing. He came to visit them, Nov. 21, 1979, on their Spirits Have Flown tour & joined them on stage, to sing with them for the finale.
The Bee Gees wrote for him & supported him. He had the sound & the look of Barry. He was supposed to join his brothers but died just after his 30th birthday.... such a waste..
Oh man he was so good looking! And having your brothers- The BeeGees -singing back up is amazing. So sad to lose him to drugs. Barry said they did their fair share of drugs and alcohol too, but managed to get sober, but Andy didn’t beat it.
Omg!!!! 👏👏👏👏when I was 7 years old I loved this song so much my mom came home one day with this album for me, I flipped out!! I spent the rest of that summer singing and dancing to Andy and of course staring at his pictures cause he was sooooo CUTE!! 🔥
His first 3 singles were huge #1 hits, including this one. Nothing can compare to the disco era. I'm glad I was able to enjoy it as it was happening. I was little, but still...
I was the backstage hostess of one of his concerts.. It was very hot that day. He sent someone to the store to get dozens of water guns after rehearsal (and before the concert) We all ran around having a water fight. He also traveled with his 2 puppies. He was just a down-to-earth fun person
The Bee Gees wrote a lot of Andy’s songs and sang the backup for him. There were plans for Andy to become the 4th member of The Bee Gees but he died before it could happen. RIP Andy, Robin, and Maurice! We love and miss you!🫶🤟
Like his brother (Bee Gees). Popular in the '70s and early'80s, disco peak years. RIP, he died very young (age 30 in 1988) . drug overdose, weak heart due to chronic cocaine use. Check out videos for "Desire", "I Just want to be Your Everything", "Love is Thicker than Water", and "I Cant Help It" with Olivia Newton John (RIP< she jus died today at age 73) . Olivia longtime breast cancer survivor. She sang many great songs and many movies, including Grease.
In the early 80's in Hollywood I used to acquire my drug of choice from the girl who was also Andy's dealer and she talked about him a lot. Mainly she felt sorry for him because he was so completely crushed after breaking up with Victoria Principal. I never met him there but I did make friends with a couple of the guys who were in Rick Springfield's band, he was also a big name at the time, it seemed they were always there too. But that was really a different time and place back in those days.

Barry, Robin, Maurice & Andy wrote Shadow Dancing, but Robin & Maurice didn't sing on it. Song credits show backing vocals are by Andy, Barry & John Sambataro.
He wrote it with his brothers, so apparently all the Gibbs contributed to it. (If we can believe Wikipedia.) Barry Gibb sang background vocals for the song.

Yes, he was the youngest Gibb brother. The Bee Gees ( The Brothers Gibb) Barry Gibb wrote this song and the Bee Gees did the back up vocals. Barry actually wrote all of Andys' hits.
I think the song was literally about dancing. This was about 1978 during the disco era. Big brother Barry Gibb wrote and produced most of his material with contributions from the others.

Yeah, this was definitely about more than dancing😉Andy was a solo singer, but his brother's would often sing back-up for his recordings. Barry also wrote or co-wrote his songs. On another note, could you react to "I Can Feel Your Heartbeat" by The Partridge Family? I think you'll be in for a treat with this one.
Check out some of the other Bee Gee songs to hear them singing in their regular voices. Nights on Broadway is a good choice (live from the midnight special). You will be surprised at how deep Barry’s chest voice is! And yes, Barry worked with Andy in all his songs (write, produce, sing background, etc).
I was so in love with him as a young girl in the late 70’s/early 80’s….he was perfect to me, and although my fickle young heart moved on to other crushes (Rick Springfield, Bret Michaels, George Michael, Jon Bon Jovi, Sebastian Bach, Richard Marx) in the 80’s, I was still totally devastated and heartbroken when he passed away. He was the first man who graced my wall in poster form to die, and it was crushing….he was so talented, and he is still missed♥️❤️♥️
This was off his second album. His first one was the first album I ever bought. Right before I bought this one. Had all his and BeeGees albums and still listen to them often. My room was covered with all 4 brothers posters lol. RIP Rob, Mo and Andy. He could sing falsetto when needed. It was unfortunate that he never had the time to hone his art as his brothers did, but in saying that he was just as talented.
You should check out the 60's Bee Gees music (before Barry started singing falsetto). He sings lead on "Words", "First of May", and "To Love Somebody". Robin sings lead on "Massachusetts" and "I started a Joke". They have so many good songs from back then (though I do like the 70's stuff too).
Another forgotten blast from the past. If you didn't like dancing, which a lot of guys seemed uncomfortable with - disco sucked. But I went to a lot of parties danced, met girls, had drinks, partied, and had a great time - and I was NO smooth operator - so I have fond memories of that time. I didn't have to pick up chicks to have a good time - and did surprisingly well anyway.
He can hit the falsetto notes that Barry can. I had his pictures up in my room at the same time I had Prince and Michael Jackson and I might have been 10 at the most. I cried when he died. Even at my age I knew 30 was too young to die. He was actually going to become the 4th Bee Gee but died before he could.
Brad no Barry has the voice!! Even though Andy was the closet to Barry’s voice and look’s!! I had the biggest crush on Andy! Fun fact that I recently learned from listening to America Top 40 Countdown reruns: Andy is the only artist in history to unseat a family member for the number one spot in the Countdown when his hit song beat out his brothers for that spot. Honestly I don't remember which tracks were involved.
back in the day, Andy was on every girl's wall. he was a major heart throb.

Fun fact that I recently learned from listening to America Top 40 Countdown reruns: Andy is the only artist in history to unseat a family member for the number one spot in the Countdown when his hit song beat out his brothers for that spot. Honestly I don't remember which tracks were involved.
