There is no greater feeling in the world than knowing you can take on all that the sea has to throw at you and win. When you are just over 30 years old and in command of the biggest and toughest ships that were ever designed. Its a privalidge to be with such people. A Big thank you to the British seamen I worked with during this era. You came from all parts of the UK from Orkney to Sark. You were and are the best bar none. Thank You
Great Vid, I worked on Lady Constance after she caught fire in 2000. I was impressed by the size and power of the vessle and often sat on deck during her sea trials to get back to working standards.
Great Tribute to the men of United Towing. I came in late to UT. I was there during the SMS phase. Skipper on Scotsman, Serviceman, Guardsman and Englishman. Started tuggie life with Alexander Towing ( Swansea) in the early 80's as A/B on Margam, Mumbles, Hendon and Indefatigable. Went on to Offshore Marine/Zapata on Cromarty ,Shetland,Regal, Anglia ,Mercia and Dee Shore/ Service. Captain on Cambridge, Dee, Mercia and Cumbria Service. Then on to OIL Champion and Osprey. Next
I worked on the Tollman for a spell after it was lifted and dried out. always nervous when we were stern tug in case the bridle snapped. worked with an african called karl who some how managed to keep me out of trouble.often wondered how he got on. nice to know the story about the dead bod, saw it a few times in the passing but until today had no idea who or even why it came about.
My father worked for UTC for many years, he was unlucky enough to be on the Hullman that got capsized in the Humber, but lucky enought to get off alive...
Anyone remember David Hart. He was a friend of my fathers and allowed me on board one day with his son when we where..? Well, I remember the day. Britannia the royal Yacht came into King George Docks with her escort HMS Malcolm and good Job the Queen was arriving by train later in week because Btitania collided with side of Locks and paint was peeling off ! soon got that sorted. I think we were aboard either 'Tidesman' Priestman' or 'Yorkshireman' and I recall Captain Hart being amused by it
Great brought back memories of my time in united towing..loved it.. kev marshall (AB) I sailed on the Statesman Seaman Superman Norman Scotsman Welshman Irishman Serviceman Linesman Winchman
my grandfather worked for them for many years his name Taff the B, well Huge Shelton-Jones he we also found that my daughters partner Grandad also worked with o=him on the tugs his surname was Hartley
Toisa was next. Captian on Straffarrar, Lion. Panther,Conquerer and Puma. A period overseas with BUE when I was Captain of Aura (UT 704) And then back in the North Sea with SMS, to finish off my seagoing carreer. Now a Pilot at the Port of London. The best days of my life were spent on board the big tugs and OSV's.
I know you did this a long time ago, so you might not see this post but I'd like to show your slideshow at Humber Street Sesh this weekend. We're decorating the inside of a transport container as an Ode to Dead Bod, and it would be great to show this too.
I sailed on the Lloydsman with Norman Storey , he was a great guy I was only 17/18 yrs old and he looked after me with great advice. I also sailed on the Statesman and don't remember the one in the video . The one I sailed on was more sleek and looked like a yacht . The one in video looks more like a tender to oil rigs. would this have been the replacement Statesman ?? If any of you guys sailed with me back from Dubai, greenock, iceland, Kirkwall , Pharoe island , I wish you all well. Iam 60 yrs old now.
My dad worked for United Towing he was one of the crew that collected the Statesman from America when it was first purchased by United Towing, his name is Ted Read, I think he also sailed on the Lloydsman
Is this the same company that salvaged the Duchess Of Holland in Great Yarmouth in 1978 and then the Link-span in Douglas IOM later that year ? If so, What became of Dennis Pearce ?
My Dad, served with United Towing on many of these as engineer. Long since passed I'm afraid.
