I could never bring myself to attempt that. Craziest climb I did was free solo of Old Baldy in Kimberley Ontario Canada. Was working in town, middle of nowhere, I'm a city guy, I was so bored I just went for it, real easy holds, no real insane pitches, you can pretty well eyeball the route I took I'm not sure if it's named or if any are truthfully, was an illegal climb I found out later, not sure why? Any way, I knew I was walking down from the top, and I hit one spot starting a pitch 2 3rds of the way up the route where I had to jump for a hold, good hold, but knowing I couldn't climb down, and I was alone and nobody was there, it was nervy, I had to I think for the first real time in my life, relax and truly compose myself. That was 2010. And the mountain is open and has been dominated by a great many climbers, I'd love to go back and see if my route has a name, I'll harness up and speed through it and name it if I can. "Bored to Death" is what I would name it lol

Derbyshire gritstone is where I learned to climb. It's rougher than granite but hell on the finger ends, but I loved it. Move a little further south and you're on slippery-when-wet limestone, which I hated. I say "loved" and "hated" in the past tense because I'm 79 and fell off a ladder at home last year (when I was only 78) because I think I lost my balance and sustained a broken back, fortunately with no serious long-term consequences. There comes a time when you have to admit defeat.
I’m 71 and have been climbing over 50 years. I still worry about losing “my climbing brain’ if it’s been a few months since I’ve led outside - but so far all it takes for my climbing brain to get engaged is to to put my hands on rock and to get that first piece of gear in.
“You don’t think twice, you just do it.” Um....NO MA’AM! I believe that thinking twice is a good thing. Often times my first thought is pretty goddamned stupid. Thinking twice has saved my life.
Well maybe this trains you to have better first thoughts lol when you have the opportunity to think twice that is fine but what if you only have one shot. Then your first thought is the only one that counts
These people are very skilled and I can understand why climbing without any safety aids enhances the experience but inevitably there will be an accident. I appreciate that it's their risk to take but these young people have such a joy of life I hate to think of them getting hurt.

For some routes, okay, its not necessary. But some of them can't be climbed otherwise, there is simply no opportunity to belay, and they essentially become high boulders. You know, somehow knowing what kind of danger you get yourself into, and knowing you are controlling your fate also activates regions beyond your limits, things you think you couldn't actually do... Still kinda dumb, but hey, nobody is forced to do it. I still believe driving a car is more dangerous.
I have an incredible fear of heights like this. I get vertigo just looking off a ledge that’s 40 feet or higher.. my skin crawls watching them do this. I have respect for these brave climbers.
There was this small concrete platform at this river near my town. It lied underneath a foot bridge leading towards the Appalachian trail crossing the river. Many times ppl would jump off the bridge into the river, & it was a good 45ft drop from the top railing to the river. I used to jump off the bridge into the river, swim up to the concrete platform, & climb it to the top. It towered above you when you swam, & it was a vertical climb. I felt proud of myself afterwards.
Nicely said. These yahoos are hooping and hollering when they make it but when one falls and breaks his neck, then the tears flow. They don't get that it's not if but when they fall. Just a matter of odds. The mountain can afford to win and lose the climbs but the climbers have to be flawless every time. I took probability and like the casino, the house always wins.
One (just one of many) of the things that scares me when watching you climbers is the fact that, once you commit to a climb with no catch rope, it's an "all or nothing deal". That's scary to me, the fact that you have to keep going, just keep going, no time for weakness, just keep going! You people have got to be some of the strongest people on the planet. no shit!

If you equate cancer/drunk driver risk with free-climbing a lethal drop which could easily be belayed or protected, then I don't really think we share any common ground for discussion. I don't think that a life cut short by 50 years is lived to the full either. We have a shit-ton of great safety gear these days, choosing not to use it just seems mental to me.

Whilst I applaud their bravery (the free-climbers), I also ask myself, why? A climber using a rope still has a risk of falling as far as his/her last belay point, a free climber has zero room for error. I think of the families of such climbers and what they have to go through every single time a climb starts.
You're referring to free soloing, not free climbing. Free climbing is when you use a rope only for protection (in case of falling). Free soloing is basically free climbing without a rope. And that's exactly the attraction for some people who do free soloing: zero room for error. You have to be perfect.
My compliments ... I love this sport so much, so I would not risk my life climbing without a rope ... fall is an instant and mean death, losing the opportunity to enjoy a new adventurous route, perhaps, even more exciting . That said, however, I respect the choices of others ... enjoy your climb.
yea i wouldnt risk climbing without a rope unless i felt confident. After a while of highballing you realize that on certain difficulty you just never fall so its only a head-game and not really dangerous. Yet that said everybody can make a mistake and fall and die. Most people that free solo enough do die doing it. I feel like high balling is enough for me right now but I do see the appeal of free soloing
These climbers aren’t terrified though.... they’re nervous, but they were all extremely comfortable in their ability to do the climb before they did it solo. They also did the necessary prep work beforehand. Mad respect ✊
The hundreds of people that have died free soloing were also extremely comfortable in their ability. Stop rationalising taking ridiculous and unnecessary risks. One slip and you're DEAD. And for what? You aren't proving your skill level or doing anything you can't do safely with a rope. It's pure ego and showing how "badass" you are and wanting to one-up other people for attention and fame, so you can be special.

I had very little experience doing this, but what I can say is this. The footwear has insane grip, and you will be surprised how grabbing a ledge size of penny goes a long way for both your hands or your toes.
I honestly don't see the point of having a rope if you're not going to clip in anywhere.. My closest comparison is high ball bouldering.... with a false sense of security.

It's for clipping into an anchor at the top once they've got there to get back down again. They can also be used to stop a long long fall off a cliff to their death, and even thought they will probably break a ton of bones, they are much more likely to live, but the main reason is to get back down again after they have got to the top.
Few people have ever experienced being physically extremely stretched, yet at one with not only body but also soul. Feeling their fullest power, bringing it out of the closet, after years of honing it steel strong. Feeling invincible yet at constant risk of breaking. Feeling that the world truly embraces magic and that they are swimming in it. Those that do are blest, even if they pay with their life for they have truly experienced meaning. Even though it may to others appear nonsense.
You don't even have to climb something crazy to get that feeling. Climb 20-30 feet without protection and you'll get that feeling. A fall is a fall at that point the only thing that changes is how long until you hit the ground.
I've been close to death a few times- sepsis, meningitis, car jacking. I relatively close to death now- all my illnesses kicked off an autoimmune disease that has resulted in concrete-like blockages several inches long to develop in my large arteries. One of these days, and it won't belong, a stroke or heart attack is gonna solve all my problems. At 44, not knowing if I'll see 45, I have an appreciation for life, and I feel that life is being taken for granted when people choose this kind of ridiculously risky thing as a sport or hobby. When your time is up, all the money in the world won't buy you a second. We all have people who love us and would be devastated. Why put one's self and loved ones in this position?
When was this film made? It has actually made me understand why I love climbing rocks and that zone the brain goes into. It really does shut everything out and quietens the mind. A sense of peace comes over you. I think we tap into a primeval survival part of the brain.
I climb towers for a living and I can say sometimes you really do have to just do it and not think too hard. Mad respect for these legends though, most towers are built to be climbed, these rocks aren’t!
I love the cell work us lineman occasionally get. I hate doing the small distribution stuff(luckily I've managed to not do much & can pick & choose the work I do now), but get me on steel and I just love working at heights. Nowadays I only do it during the 5-6 months that I'm not offshore fishing but still love it. Climbing old creosote soaked poles, not so much. Stay safe 🤙🏼
We did this at a place called Mt Arapiles on a school trip , I was strong as could be with stamina and no fear, from climbing trees and jumping out of into water etc . I didn’t realise I was so far up and the teachers were screaming. Only when they did this I realised I was a long way up and had to keep going to hook around jump some metre wide cliffs and appeared to everyone half hour later . Rejoice oh young man in thy youth

I quite fancy the idea of a climb named 'appointment with death'. It would be appropriate for some of the gritstone V Diffs and some of the finishes at Swanage in the eighties were like that, not the climb itself, but scrambling up the loose ball bearing earth to get to a belay. We had to lick road in them days. :)

CrazyBastard94 There is a big difference between gathering and training a crew in order to go on a quest to discover new places and find new things to learn about, and climbing a rock to get the andrenaline (if that's how you spell it) rush, without anything you get to in the end. Elder Gamer Not all climbers do it for the adrenaline rush. Personally, I enjoy climbing because of the challenge it offers. When I'm climbing, I'm calm, there is no adrenaline whatsoever. Afterwards you get a bit of a rush, but I'd call that a feeling of accomplishment, not an adrenaline rush. And my last point is, the majority of climbers put in a lot of planning, practice and effort to climb. But hey, if you are too ignorant to see that, that's a problem that only you can fix.

As someone who climbs... its pretty safe if you make sure to having appropiate gear and have everything set up correctly. The only thing that does absolutely scare me shitless is climbing with no gear at all (free soloing) But gear, gear will keep you safe The gear will not break with a fall, as falls usually exert some 2-3 kiloNewtons of force, yet climbing gear usually can withstand at least 20kn. Carabiners, open can usually take some 10kn, and on the weakest axis can take some 5-7kn Ropes likewise can normally take similar loads (arounds 20-25kn if the end is sawn, some 15-18kn if the end is closed by a knot and the very weakest set up it can take some 5kn) When shit goes wrong is when someone set up something incorrectly or using badly worn out and badly mantained equipment. Complacency kills.

I have to admire the courage but every year, someone loses their life climbing, yet it never stops. Sure, it can be done, but you can NOT defy earth's gravity and that can be THE END for many who attempt these seemingly impossible terrains. I never understood the 'because it's there" mentality! To risk your life knowing you could die any mis-step is not for me, I enjoy life far too much. There are much safer ways of proving to yourself your mettle! If you wish to see the view from those points, fly to them! I became a pilot to enhance my view of things and to help with my acrophobia, but I fly safe because I want to do it again!

I love climbing/moving horizontally even on some kind of tough stuff, but just can not bring myself to go up more than a few feet. It's just not in me to do that, but I do enjoy watching skilled climbers do it.

two options... set top rope at the top by walking up the other side or if that's not possible get crash pads and set them next to the belay so the initial fall won't break your legs lol

Me too. Alex Honnold was untethered when he completed El Capitan, a staggering achievement. When you see how hard this small climb is for these guys you really can’t imagine how Alex did it.

There is a thin line between bravery and stupidity, this definitely crosses that line into the latter.

One (just one of many) of the things that scares me when watching you climbers is the fact that, once you commit to a climb with no catch rope, it's an "all or nothing deal". That's scary to me, the fact that you have to keep going, just keep going, no time for weakness, just keep going! You people have got to be some of the strongest people on the planet. no shit!

If you equate cancer/drunk driver risk with free-climbing a lethal drop which could easily be belayed or protected, then I don't really think we share any common ground for discussion. I don't think that a life cut short by 50 years is lived to the full either.
We have a shit-ton of great safety gear these days, choosing not to use it just seems mental to me.

Whilst I applaud their bravery (the free-climbers), I also ask myself, why? A climber using a rope still has a risk of falling as far as his/her last belay point, a free climber has zero room for error. I think of the families of such climbers and what they have to go through every single time a climb starts.
You're referring to free soloing, not free climbing. Free climbing is when you use a rope only for protection (in case of falling). Free soloing is basically free climbing without a rope. And that's exactly the attraction for some people who do free soloing: zero room for error. You have to be perfect.

My compliments ... I love this sport so much, so I would not risk my life climbing without a rope ... fall is an instant and mean death, losing the opportunity to enjoy a new adventurous route, perhaps, even more exciting . That said, however, I respect the choices of others ... enjoy your climb.

yea i wouldnt risk climbing without a rope unless i felt confident. After a while of highballing you realize that on certain difficulty you just never fall so its only a head-game and not really dangerous. Yet that said everybody can make a mistake and fall and die.
Most people that free solo enough do die doing it. I feel like high balling is enough for me right now but I do see the appeal of free soloing
These climbers aren’t terrified though.... they’re nervous, but they were all extremely comfortable in their ability to do the climb before they did it solo. They also did the necessary prep work beforehand. Mad respect ✊

Stop rationalising taking ridiculous and unnecessary risks. One slip and you're DEAD. And for what? You aren't proving your skill level or doing anything you can't do safely with a rope. I had very little experience doing this, but what I can say is this.
The footwear has insane grip, and you will be surprised how grabbing a ledge size of penny goes a long way for both your hands or your toes.

I honestly don't see the point of having a rope if you're not going to clip in anywhere.. My closest comparison is high ball bouldering.... with a false sense of security.

just a top rope belay. their not in any danger
It's for clipping into an anchor at the top once they've got there to get back down again. They can also be used to stop a long long fall off a cliff to their death, and even thought they will probably break a ton of bones, they are much more likely to live, but the main reason is to get back down again after they have got to the top.
It could also be used to hang themselves with if they realize they aren't as good a climber as they thought they were...lol

Few people have ever experienced being physically extremely stretched, yet at one with not only body but also soul. Feeling their fullest power, bringing it out of the closet, after years of honing it steel strong. Feeling invincible yet at constant risk of breaking. Feeling that the world truly embraces magic and that they are swimming in it. Those that do are blest, even if they pay with their life for they have truly experienced meaning. After watching all the free solo climbs, I guess you really feel alive the most when you're closest to death.
You don't even have to climb something crazy to get that feeling. Climb 20-30 feet without protection and you'll get that feeling.
A fall is a fall at that point the only thing that changes is how long until you hit the ground.
I've been close to death a few times- sepsis, meningitis, car jacking. I relatively close to death now- all my illnesses kicked off an autoimmune disease that has resulted in concrete-like blockages several inches long to develop in my large arteries. One of these days, and it won't belong, a stroke or heart attack is gonna solve all my problems. At 44, not knowing if I'll see 45, I have an appreciation for life, and I feel that life is being taken for granted when people choose this kind of ridiculously risky thing as a sport or hobby. When your time is up, all the money in the world won't buy you a second. We all have people who love us and would be devastated. Why put one's self and loved ones in this position?

When was this film made? It has actually made me understand why I love climbing rocks and that zone the brain goes into. It really does shut everything out and quietens the mind. A sense of peace comes over you. I think we tap into a primeval survival part of the brain.

I climb towers for a living and I can say sometimes you really do have to just do it and not think too hard. Mad respect for these legends though, most towers are built to be climbed, these rocks aren’t!
I love the cell work us lineman occasionally get. I hate doing the small distribution stuff(luckily I've managed to not do much & can pick & choose the work I do now), but get me on steel and I just love working at heights. Nowadays I only do it during the 5-6 months that I'm not offshore fishing but still love it. Climbing old creosote soaked poles, not so much. Stay safe 🤙🏼

No bolts, but a rope. One pebble popping out, or a smear slipping, and you will be hurt or worse.
We did this at a place called Mt Arapiles on a school trip , I was strong as could be with stamina and no fear, from climbing trees and jumping out of into water etc . I didn’t realise I was so far up and the teachers were screaming. Only when they did this I realised I was a long way up and had to keep going to hook around jump some metre wide cliffs and appeared to everyone half hour later . Rejoice oh young man in thy youth

I quite fancy the idea of a climb named 'appointment with death'. It would be appropriate for some of the gritstone V Diffs and some of the finishes at Swanage in the eighties were like that, not the climb itself, but scrambling up the loose ball bearing earth to get to a belay. We had to lick road in them days. :)

Elder Gamer Not all climbers do it for the adrenaline rush. Personally, I enjoy climbing because of the challenge it offers. When I'm climbing, I'm calm, there is no adrenaline whatsoever. Afterwards you get a bit of a rush, but I'd call that a feeling of accomplishment, not an adrenaline rush. And my last point is, the majority of climbers put in a lot of planning, practice and effort to climb. But hey, if you are too ignorant to see that, that's a problem that only you can fix.

Um as far as I know, free solo is supposed to be without any ropes... like at all. I don't get it honestly.
As someone who climbs... its pretty safe if you make sure to having appropiate gear and have everything set up correctly.
The only thing that does absolutely scare me shitless is climbing with no gear at all (free soloing)

The gear will not break with a fall, as falls usually exert some 2-3 kiloNewtons of force, yet climbing gear usually can withstand at least 20kn.
Carabiners, open can usually take some 10kn, and on the weakest axis can take some 5-7kn
Ropes likewise can normally take similar loads (arounds 20-25kn if the end is sawn, some 15-18kn if the end is closed by a knot and the very weakest set up it can take some 5kn)
When shit goes wrong is when someone set up something incorrectly or using badly worn out and badly mantained equipment.

I have to admire the courage but every year, someone loses their life climbing, yet it never stops. Sure, it can be done, but you can NOT defy earth's gravity and that can be THE END for many who attempt these seemingly impossible terrains. I never understood the 'because it's there" mentality! To risk your life knowing you could die any mis-step is not for me, I enjoy life far too much. There are much safer ways of proving to yourself your mettle! If you wish to see the view from those points, fly to them! I became a pilot to enhance my view of things and to help with my acrophobia, but I fly safe because I want to do it again!
the "because its there" mentality brought us from living in caves to today, This ability to conquer new horizons is our human gift and when you do you never know if that is something worthy. Easy to say looking back. Lets respect people for their life choices and its imo very important to continue admire people for going out there on adventures. I love climbing/moving horizontally even on some kind of tough stuff, but just can not bring myself to go up more than a few feet. It's just not in me to do that, but I do enjoy watching skilled climbers do it.
